  • Here are some interesting facts about the Research Excellence Framework (REF):

    1. The Research Excellence Framework is a national exercise that assesses the quality and impact of research in UK higher education institutions.
    2. It was first introduced in 2014 and is conducted every six years, with the next REF taking place in 2028.
    3. The REF evaluates research submitted by four broad discipline-based units of assessment: Allied Health Professions, Architecture, Built Environment and Planning, and Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and the Environment.
    4. Research outputs are judged on four key metrics: Research Power, Quality of Outputs, Research Environment, and Open Access.
    5. The REF has four broad Research Quality Profile bands: 4*, 3*/4**, 2* and Unclassified. The bands determine the distribution of funding among institutions.
    6. The REF has a significant impact on UK higher education, as it influences research funding allocations, institutional reputation, and staff career progression.
    7. The REF has been criticized for being too bureaucratic, resource-intensive, and for potentially stifling innovation in academic research.
    8. The REF has also been credited for promoting interdisciplinary research, improving research quality, and driving innovation in higher education.
    9. The REF provides a framework for universities to showcase their research excellence, which can attract funding, talent, and collaborations.
    10. The REF is overseen by UKRI (United Kingdom Research and Innovation), which ensures the integrity and consistency of the process.

These facts provide a general overview of the Research Excellence Framework and its significance in the UK higher education landscape.
