Borderlands is an upcoming science fiction first-person shooter with RPG elements that is currently in development by Gearbox Software for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The console versions of the game will be released in North America on October 20, 2009 and in PAL countries on October 23. The Windows version will follow on October 26, 2009. The game was first revealed in the September 2007 issue of Game Informer magazine.

Gameplay

Lilith (left) and Mordecai (far right) prepare to attack a Rakk Hive, one of the enemies in the game

Borderlands will feature four player online "drop-in, drop-out" cooperative play along with other single-player and multiplayer modes, and a very large amount of weapons. Players can choose from four different playable characters who each have their own unique abilities and skill trees. In addition, players may have access to customizable vehicles for "vehicular combat" and will also be able to customize their pre-selected character. Deceased enemies will drop some equipment, which is then available for players to pick up.

Quests

Like traditional RPGs, much of the player's time will be taken up by quests. There will be 160 quests of varying length and complexity, 30 of these being part of the story and the other 130 as side quests. Many of these quests will not be mutually exclusive, and can be completed together. Each quest carries its own rewards, such as new weapons, or perhaps revealing a new piece of the story. After beating the game, a second play through is available, with the same character statistics but with harder enemies. The same quests are available, but with better rewards.

Player vs. player

At any time while playing Borderlands, a player can melee another player to issue a challenge. When the melee is returned, a player vs. player "duel" starts. Players can also travel to "arenas" located at various locations in the game world. These arenas are specifically made for competitive play, where players can face off in both Free-For-All styled games or team-based games.

Random content generation

The game will also have a feature similar to the Wolfenstein random level generation system. The system used is one akin to Diablo, a "Procedural Content Creation System", which will influence the weaponry seen in-game, as well as the in-game world and various enemy creatures. In a preview of Borderlands, MTV Multiplayer claimed to have seen the debug menu for the game. According to them, the Debug menu listed the total number of weapons in the game as 3,166,880, although this is now thought to be more around 17,750,000.

As for the game world, Borderlands features a system that randomly instances the surrounding landscape, with randomly placed things such as bunkers, towers, caves, enemies, and exploding cacti. All of this is done without a loading screen. Gearbox claims that the player will not see a loading screen after they boot up the game. Core areas, such as towns, will remain the same throughout the game, however, as will the general paths that connect town to town.

During E3 2009, it was revealed that enemy creatures in the game would be able to alternate how they attack players. One example shown was a spider like creature that leaped around and would jump onto players' faces, while another variant rolled up into a ball and attacked people.

Plot

Story

In the distant future, several colonization ships journey to Pandora, a planet on the edge of the galaxy. The colonists are drawn to the planet in search of a better life and the prospect of striking it rich by claiming the vast deposits of mineral resources rumored to be there. After finally arriving, the colonists discover that the planet is barren of anything of significant value other than deteriorated alien ruins scattered across the land. Those who can afford to do so leave Pandora, and those who remain revolve around chaos and lawlessness. Some of the settlers seek to get rich quick by discovering alien technology, but most others are just trying to survive. After seven Earth years, Pandora's orbit brings it to the transition from winter to spring, and many horrifying creatures emerge from hibernation.

A beacon of hope for the remaining colonists emerges in the form of a mysterious vault carved in the side of a mountain. This vault is said to contain vast stores of alien technology and secrets. However, the people who discovered the vault were completely wiped out by some sort of protective force, and the only evidence of their discovery is a scattered radio transmission proclaiming the vault's majesty, but not its location.

Characters

There will be four playable characters in the game, all with unique skills, abilities, and back stories. As these characters level up, the player can increase basic stats for them such as health totals, ammo capacity, and accuracy. Each character also has three unique focus skill trees to develop making each and every character different even if they start the same. There is also an accessory item type specific to each character.

Brick (Berserker)

A massive specimen of a man who likes to use his fists to smash the enemy above all else. He wears a necklace adorned with the paw of his beloved deceased dog. He fills in the tank niche and can take quite a beating. His class specific skill is being able to go into a state called "berserker" which makes him invulnerable for a short period and makes his melee attacks extremely potent. His Brawler tree increases the power and duration time of Berserker, and also adds damage to his melee attacks. His Blaster tree increases his proficiency with weapons, mainly explosives. The Tank tree increases his maximum health and affects how fast his shield will recharge, and how much damage it can take.

Lilith (Siren)

Once a human, Lilith at one point was turned into a siren. One of only six Sirens, they are a group of people with unbelievable powers, but no way to control them. She comes to Pandora in search of another Siren, in an effort to find out more about herself. Lilith's most iconic ability is called "Phase Walk", where she will teleport herself into another dimension where Lilith becomes invisible and can sneak around enemies with massively increased speed. Upon revealing herself, she detonates a shock-wave that can do area effect damage to all enemies. Her skill trees are Controller, which makes Lilith's Phasewalk and melee attacks more powerful; Elemental, which makes her more powerful with guns by increasing their rate of fire and making the elemental effects of weapons have a higher chance of happening; and The Assassin tree makes her critical chances become higher, and increases her Phasewalk melee attack.

Mordecai (Hunter)

Mordecai came to Pandora in search of a man from his past named Demosthenes. Upon learning that Demosthenes has died, Mordecai sets off to learn how he died and what he was carrying. Mordecai is most proficient with pistols and sniper rifles. His class specific skill is the ability to release a deadly pet Bloodwing which can be trained to kill multiple people at one time. Mordecai's gunslinger skills benefit his proficiency with pistols (specifically, revolvers). His sniper tree adds damage bonuses to sniper rifle and makes him a more proficient sniper, and his rogue tree serves to improve his pet Bloodwing.

Roland (Soldier)

Roland is a former soldier of the Crimson Lance, a sort of highly trained private military that disregards law and order. A decade-old vendetta is rekindled when Roland learns that the leader of the Brigadiers has a suspiciously similar name to a man he has sworn to kill. Roland's class specific skill is a turret. It can be specialized to deal damage, heal teammates, or spawn ammo. His other skills involve increasing the damage he can inflict to making his bullets heal teammates. His skill trees are: Medical which specializes him in healing himself and teammates, Support which improves the effectiveness of his turret, and Infantry which improves his damage with weapons.

Development

The game's setting is inspired by the Mad Max film series and Diablo by Blizzard, and will be following a visual style akin to its concept art designs. The game was originally intended to have gritty realistic graphics, but leaked screenshots in April 2009 from a then unreleased PC Gamer showed that the graphics had been changed to a cel shading artistic style. Take-Two officially announced the switch in style later that week.

Downloadable content

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is the first installment of downloadable content for Borderlands. The content will include new quests, items, and enemies, and will be made available sometime before the end of 2009. The storyline takes place in an area known as Jakobs Cove. Dr. Ned had been in charge of keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, but ended up transforming them into abominations. The player will assist Dr. Ned in trying to cure the victims of his work.

Official Xbox Magazine gave Borderlands 8.5/10. The review praised the scope of the game and the "ferociously over-the-top" combat, but criticized the implementation of enemy spawning and co-op as well as the inability to save from anywhere.

In the latest issue of the Australian game magazine Atomic MPC, Borderlands received a score of 91% where the reviewer praised the games cell-shaded art style and its blend between a role-playing game and a first person shooter. The main criticism was that the guns started to feel similar after a while, and how the loot was a little bit too overwhelming, as the rest of the player's weapons practically felt useless compared to the new ones they found. The review concluded with a "HOT" symbol, and as a possible contender for the Game of The Year 2009.

Jeff Gerstmann from Giant Bomb gave Borderlands 4 stars out of 5, called it a successful loot-driven first-person shooter "where plenty of other Diablo-inspired games have failed miserably", but criticised the paper-thin plot and the predictable AI.

Charles Onyett from IGN awarded Borderlands an 8.8/10. He noted that fans of RPGs would enjoy the streamlined item management, and treasure hunting, but criticized the lack of character skills. With beautiful visuals, tried RPG mechanics, and solid first-person-shooter gameplay, Onyett felt that the game was enjoyable. He also felt that the game was better than any games that myles owns and that myles secretly wants it but cannot afford it as he spent all his money on a stupid mac book
