Dancing with the Stars returned for its twelfth season on March 21, 2011. Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Len Goodman returned to the show as judges, while Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke returned as hosts. NFL Wide Receiver Hines Ward won the competition over Emmy Award-winning actress Kirstie Alley and Disney star Chelsea Kane, who took 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Overview

On the official website, a page gave people the chance to recommend celebrities they wanted to see on Season 12 of the show through comments.

Pro-dancer Derek Hough, who is the incumbent champion, did not return for Season 12 in order to film an upcoming movie but will return for Season 13.

The cast was revealed on February 28, 2011, during The Bachelor, and the professional partners were revealed on March 2, 2011.

Hip hop artist Romeo, injured before the beginning of broadcasts of season 2, and replaced during that season by his father, Master P, was one of the competitors in season 12.

Romeo & Chelsie followed by Chelsea & Mark were the first to score 10s in Week 6. (This is the first 10 Chelsie Hightower has received on a solo dance since joining the show in season 8.)

The Salsa made a return to Season 12 in the Quarter Finals (Week 8). The last time the Salsa was danced was in Season 9.

The first perfect 30 went to Hines & Kym in Week 9, the latest a 30 has been earned along with Mario Lopez earning the first perfect 30 in week 9 of Season 3.

This season marked the first time that a perfect-scoring freestyle, for Chelsea & Mark, resulted in the couple coming in third place in the competition.

Despite making it to the finals, the three Finalists had one unlearned dance that they did not perform. Chelsea & Kirstie had not learned the Tango, and Hines had not learned the Waltz.

This season marked the fourth time for Mark, Kym and Maks, each, to advance to the finals.

Back at the top of the leaderboard in the individual round were Ralph & Karina as they earned their first 10 from Donnie and received 36⁄40 for their Quickstep. Hines & Kym also earned their first 10 from Bruno for their Tango and also earned 36⁄40.
