À cette époque, le port de Québec deviendra l’un des plus importants du monde en raison de son commerce du bois avec l’Angleterre. Bien que bénéficiant de tarifs préférentiels, les marchands de bois canadiens devaient néanmoins payer des droits de douane en abordant la Grande Bretagne. C’est l’appât d’un gain plus important qui pousse Charles Wood, un constructeur de navire installé à la pointe ouest de l’île d’Orléans (Sainte-Pétronille) à imaginer un stratagème pour éviter de payer les tarifs requis. En 1824, il construit le Columbus, un quatre mâts jaugeant 3690 tonneaux. Le navire moyen alors construit à Québec faisait 200 tonneaux. Construit en bois équarri, il devait être démonté une fois arrivé, évitant ainsi les droits d’entrée, le bateau proprement dit n’étant pas taxés. Une fois le navire déchargé, on décide de tenter un nouveau voyage, mais le Columbus était conçu pour n’effectuer qu’une seule traversée. C’est pourquoi il coula en arrivant au Nouveau Brunswick l’année suivante. L’équipage est sauvé in extremis. Wood ne s’avoue pas vaincu. En 1825, toujours à son chantier de l’île, il récidive en construisant le Baron of Renfrew. Cette fois-ci, il jauge 5294 tonneaux. Un mastodonte. Un fois de plus, c’est l’échec. Il fait naufrage face à Gravelines, sur les côtes françaises. C’est la fin de l’aventure québécoise de constructeur de navires et de marchand de bois de Charles Wood (patronyme prédestiné). Néanmoins, il est passé dans les annales de l’histoire de la construction navale à Québec et au monde. » – Société historique de Québec
