Lai Daihan (or Lai Dai Han, Lai Tai Han) (라이따이한 in Korean) is a person born to a South Korean military father and a Vietnamese mother during the Vietnam War. There are also those who fathered not by Korean soldiers but by Korean workers who stationed in Vietnam during the War. They are usually abandoned by their soldier-father.


"Lai," which is a scornful word, means "mixed blood" and "Daihan" means "Korea" (Vietnamese pronunciation of 대한 (大韓)). The exact number of Lai Daihan is unknown. According to Busan Ilbo, there are 5,000 at least and 30,000 at most. According to Park Oh-soon, Korean-Vietnamese fathered not by Korean soldiers but by Korean workers who stationed in Vietnam during the War would probably reach 10,000 in number.

The cause of the Lai Daihan problem is said to be confort women, rape and irresponsible desertion of the children. Atrocities by Military of South Korea are still remembered in Vietnam and The Hankyoreh expressed it as a massacre (대량학살).
