The Jay Trophy Men’s Elite Cup formally known as Jai Trophy is a multi-day cricket tournament organized by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). the first edition is scheduled to take place from the first week of January 2025, the tournament will feature the top four teams from the Prime Minister Cup.
The matches will be held at Shree Ram Janaki International Cricket Stadium , commonly called as Ramjanki Multipurpose Stadium in Janakpur and Narayani Cricket Ground in Birgunj, Madhesh Province.
History
In January 2024, CAN proposed the formerly Men’s Elite Trophy now Jay Trophy to introduce a multi-day format for the top teams from the Prime Minister Cup. This initiative aims to provide a higher level of competition and further the development of cricket in Nepal.
The Jay Trophy or Jai Trophy holds a unique position in Nepal’s cricket history, symbolizing the country’s passion for the sport and its commitment to nurturing players for the international stage. Named in honor of Jai Kumar Nath Shah, the first president of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), this prestigious national cricket championship has been instrumental in promoting cricket throughout the country since its inception in 1979.
The tournament, which has seen various format changes to meet CAN's requirements, remains a cornerstone of Nepalese cricket. Jai Kumar Nath Shah, honored with the ICC Global Lifetime Service Award, played a pivotal role in the development of cricket in Nepal. His legacy lives on through this tournament, which continues to feature district-level teams competing fiercely for the title.
In the latest edition, Kapilvastu District emerged victorious, defeating Bara District by six wickets in the final. The Jai Trophy is celebrated for its competitive spirit and has continually contributed to the growth and popularity of cricket in Nepal.
Tournament format
The Jay Trophy will be contested in a multi-day format. The tournament will feature a round-robin structure which will be played in a two-day format in preliminary stage, with the top four teams from the Prime Minister Cup qualifying for the competition. The best two teams on the point table will play the final which will be played in three-day format.
