Luffy's most powerful abilities are his upgraded ''Gears'', which he developed after being beaten effortlessly by Admiral Aokiji. Luffy's Gears are used to enhance his basic attacks, and are regarded as different forms of his regular body. To date, Luffy has used two forms in the story, Gear Second and Gear Third. Luffy's most powerful abilities are his upgraded 'forms', which he developed after being beaten effortlessly by Admiral Aokiji. These techniques are called ''Gears'', and Luffy has currently displayed two very different versions.
===Gear Second===
In order to use Gear Second, Luffy uses his legs to compress the air in his body, greatly increasing his blood flow, increasing his physical abilities beyond their normal limits. Though the increased blood pressure would kill anyone else, Luffy's rubber body allows him to withstand such forces. According to Rob Lucchi, Gear Second hacks away at Luffy's life, but Luffy is willing to make the sacrifice in order to protect his crew. When using this technique, Luffy commonly precedes the names of his normal attacks with the word Jet.
===Gear Third===
Gear Third is a technique Luffy activates by biting into his thumb and inflating his bones with air. Using his torso as a conduit to transfer the compressed air from limb to limb, Luffy is able to greatly enhance his attacks to the point of having the power of a giant. While using this technique, one punch from Luffy was enough to cause Rob Lucchi to lose consciousness. To deflate his limbs Luffy simply exhales, but after doing so his body shrinks for approximately the same amount of time he was using Gear Third. While in his shrunken state, Luffy has shown an inability to stretch his body. While using this technique Luffy commonly precedes his attack names with the word Giganto.

Luffy is also able to utilize both of these techniques simultaneously, shown to great effect during his fight with Shichibukai member Gecko Moria.

Monkey D. Luffy (モンキー・D・ルフィ, Monkī Dī Rufi) is a character and leading protagonist in the anime and manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. He is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Conception

Eiichiro Oda was heavily influenced by the manga Dragon Ball, and had the series in mind when designing his characters. Oda has said that when creating Luffy, he was thinking about manliness, because Dragon Ball had already done all the things that a child could possibly be hapy about.. Oda gave Luffy stretching powers because he wanted the fighting style to be silly, so that no matter how tense a situation got, the reader could relax without becoming stressed out. The fruit Luffy gained his abilities from was originally called the 'Gomu Fruit', but after Oda's editor pointed out that a real gomu fruit existed, he changed it immediately. When drawing One Piece, Oda has said he tries to make Luffy a very straightforward character

About Luffy

Eiichiro Oda has mentioned that the animal Luffy most resembles is a monkey. According to Oda, Luffy is represented by the color red, and smells like meat.

Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat pirates and the son of Monkey D. Dragon, brother to Portgas D. Ace, and the grandson of vice-admiral Monkey D. Garp. His trademark Straw Hat (from which he gets his nickname 'Straw Hat Luffy') was entrusted to him by the legendary pirate captain Red-Haired Shanks.

Luffy grew up in Fuscia town, on an island in the East Blue. As a child he was inspired to become a pirate by the legendary captain Shanks. He accidentally ate the Devil's Fruit Gomu Gomu no Mi, giving him the ability to stretch any part of his body. While defending the Red Hair pirates' honor from a gang of mountain bandits, Luffy is kidnapped by Higuma the Bear. The bandit leader takes Luffy out to sea with him to escape Shanks' wrath, and throws him overboard just before being eaten by a Sea King. Luffy is almost swallowed himself, but Shanks saves him from the creature, losing his arm in the process.

Abilities

Luffy gained stretching powers from eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi(English: Gum Gum Fruit), one of many Devil Fruits in One Piece. As a result, Luffy's body gained the properties of rubber, giving him incredible stretching abilities. Luffy uses the malleability of his limbs to achieve tremendous velocity to strike enemies with devastating impact. His rubber body is virtually immune to recoil from these attacks, and blunt objects such as punches and even bullets deflect off him harmlessly. Fighters with superhuman strength, such as CP9 member Rob Lucchi have proven capable of damaging Luffy regardless of his normal resistance. Luffy's body also resists electricity, an ability which gave him an advantage while fighting Enel. Luffy is also able to store large amounts of liquids in his body (such as water) as seen during his battle with Crocodile. Like all Devil Fruit users, Luffy cannot swim (though ironically, he was incapable of swimming before eating the fruit).

Luffy's most powerful abilities are his upgraded 'forms', which he developed after being beaten effortlessly by Admiral Aokiji. These techniques are called Gears, and Luffy has currently displayed two very different versions.

Gear Second

In order to use Gear Second, Luffy uses his legs to compress the air in his body, greatly increasing his blood flow, increasing his physical abilities beyond their normal limits. Though the increased blood pressure would kill anyone else, Luffy's rubber body allows him to withstand such forces. According to Rob Lucchi, Gear Second hacks away at Luffy's life, but Luffy is willing to make the sacrifice in order to protect his crew. When using this technique, Luffy commonly precedes the names of his normal attacks with the word Jet.

Gear Third

Reception

Luffy has been ranked as the most popular One Piece character in a recent Japanese fan poll.

Monkey D. Luffy in Other Media

Luffy appears twice in the Webcomic VG Cats, the first commenting on 4Kids Entertainment's treatment of the American anime dub; the second being Michael Jackson wearing Luffy's clothing.

In Yakitate!! Japan, episode 56, there is a parody of One Piece where Kuroyanagi turns into a "Tenobi Man" as a reaction from trying Azuma's Japanese-Style Ja-pan dumpling. To this effect, he dons a straw hat and starts stretching his arms like rubber to great lengths.

Luffy's Devil Fruit was referenced in the Japanese TV Drama show Trick.
