About the surname

The cover of the Bon Cop Bad Cop DVD shows that Eric Canuel's surname is written with a K instead of a C. They are also sites that Eric is written with a K with others with a C. I've simply added an article that redirects here which is written with a K.--JForget 18:56, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Eric / Érik

So he was born Eric? Or was it in fact Éric?
He certainly does get credited as Érik.
Is he ever credited as Eric or Éric?
At some point, the way he is credited matters more than his original birth name. Angie Voight's article is called "Angelina Jolie", the way she gets billed.

His first name is Érik as credited on La Loi du cochon, Nez rouge, Le Dernier Tunnel, Le Survenant, Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Cadavres, Barrymore, Lac Mystère and Les Jeunes Loups.
I never saw a credit with Eric. --AndréLegault (talk) 07:51, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
Érik is definitely more correct here, although unlike AndréLegault I have seen sources refer to him as Éric — for instance, "Eric Canuel" gets 52 hits in ProQuest (although "Erik Canuel" gets over 200, so there's no argument to be made that Eric-with-a-c would be a "standard" form of his name in English.) I have no idea whether that's because people confuse him with the cinematographer Éric Cayla or if it's just bad copy editing, but spelling Canuel's first name with a c instead of a k is not unknown. Incorrect, yes, but not unknown. Bearcat (talk) 13:40, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

False the Barrymore example is a English-language source and has an accent. Here is another English-language source : Bon Cop, Bad Cop. --AndréLegault (talk) 10:46, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
  • Support. The problem here doesn't hinge specifically on whether the sources are in French or English per se. The actual problem is that the English-language sources use multiple different forms: I routinely see English sources for him using both the "Eric" and "Erik" spellings, and both retaining and dropping the accented É/E. So per WP:CANFRENCH, there are two rules in play here: (a) where there are multiple competing English forms for the same topic, use the official French name rather than editwarring over which English form is or isn't the "correct" English form, and (b) "People's names should reflect the spelling most correctly used in reference to that specific person, regardless of how the same name might or might not be spelled by a different person." Redirects already exist from all three variants (Erik, Érik, Éric), so nobody will fail to get to the right person over spelling — and even if there were actually a consensus to leave the accent off, we would still have to fix the terminal c/k regardless. Date of birth

Wikidata says his date of birth is April 30, 1961, but without a reference. I have it as 1961 (year only) until a reference can be added. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 19:58, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
