A fact from Étienne-Gaspard Robert appeared on Misplaced Pages's Main Page in the Did you know column on 4 August 2007. The text of the entry was as follows: A record of the entry may be seen at Misplaced Pages:Recent additions/2007/August.

Scientific Flights

I felt free to expand the ballooning section with some info on the experiments and the contradictions of the results with the laws of Physics. Everything is written down in the "Annalen der Physik" for which I made a new reference.

I really hope, that the entry is ok, as it is, because it is my first ever edit here at Misplaced Pages (I signed up last week). What are your opinion`s?

La Minerve

La Minerve/Minerva - a crazy balloon idea that Robert was part of. I'm not sure of the truth behind it all but here are some sources:

Certainly something that needs adding and I hope we can get to the bottom of this at some point. violet/riga (t) 22:50, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Quote

The internal logic of the quote requires that "if even the most discreet among them run into the arms of a skeleton", rather than indiscreet as we have it. --Wetman 17:54, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

I read and reread the quote and still don't entirely understand what was meant. It may be a mistranslation but it is the only way that it appears on numerous other sites. Odd. violet/riga (t) 19:52, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
Those who are discrète are the least likely to run about shrieking and banging into skeletons. Those who are indiscrète— well it's what one might expect of them anyway. Things do get recopied all over the Internet, without being examined... --Wetman 07:18, 4 August 2007 (UTC)
I've removed the latter part of the quote so that we avoid this - it's been bugging me for a while and now I've got your second opinion I think it's best gone. violet/riga (t) 08:17, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Images

The first two images here are widely used on many different sites. I'm assuming that they are taken from drawings that are no longer covered by copyright but I'm not familiar enough with the rules there. Anyone able to say if they are acceptable for us to use? violet/riga (t) 19:57, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
