*Alleged* attempted assassination

It is not established that assassination was actually attempted, since the trial had the form of a show trial. Quoting from Raymond Kevorkian's book The Armenian Genocide: A Complete History (p. 805): "It clearly seems, however, that this “plot” involving members of the CUP’s Central Committee was nothing but a show staged by the Kemalists, who wanted to rid themselves of the last Ittihadists “legally.”" and "Zürcher seems convinced that the “complot de Smyrne” was merely a pretext for liquidating the first generation of Young Turks".
