Ellen Gallagher, born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1965, is a New York and Rotterdam, based artist.[1]
Education
[edit]Gallagher studied at Oberlin College in Ohio (1982-84), Studio 70 in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky (1989), the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (1992) and the Skowhegan School of Art in Maine (1993).[2]
Works
[edit]Her works deal with themes of race and identity through the use of pictographs, symbols, codes and repetitions, often appropriating archival materials collected from popular mid-century African-American magazines.[3][4] Her mediums include painting, works on paper, film and video.
