Kalpit Veerval (aka Kalpit Veerwal) is a student from Udaipur in Rajasthan, India who shot to fame in April 2017, when he topped the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) with a perfect score of 100% (360/360 marks).[1][2] He is the first student ever to attain this perfect score in JEE-Main[1], an examination that is considered as one of the toughest in the world[3][4]. This feat won him entry to the 2018 edition of Limca Book of Records under the category "Education Achievements".[1][5]

Winners of the JEE examination can gain admission to the undergraduate (bachelor degree) engineering programs at institutes of national importance in India, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology or Indian Institutes of Information Technology. With a reported year 2017 success rate of only 0.92% (in IITs) [6] out of the 1 million+ students who attempted it, the JEE examination is among the toughest examinations in India.

In previous years, Kalpit had also topped the Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO) at the all-India level during Class 9, and the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) during Class 10.[7]

Personal Life

He was born in 2000 at Udaipur to his father Pushkar Lal Veerwal, a compounder at Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital Udaipur and his mother Pushpa Veerwal, a government school teacher.[8][6]

He is currently studying Computer Science at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.[1]

Kalpit's IIT-JEE achievement received a large coverage by mainstream media across India, including national newspapers in English[2][6] and Hindi [9] as well as regional[10][7] and vernacular press in various languages including Tamil[11][12][13], Malayalam [14] , Kannada[15] and Bengali[16].

This also caused a major buzz in Indian social media especially among students and parents.[17][18]

Strategy for JEE preparation

He studied at the Resonance institute[19] since 8th class. He studied at Resonance's Udaipur study center instead of Kota, because he did not want to take "studies as a burden" and rather wanted to enjoy the learning process.[2]

Kalpit shared his approach saying[10]:

  • "I hardly used to study 6-7 hours per day. I used to take proper food and sleep and my parents were round the corner with me to ensure that I stay fit"[10]
  • "I used to play badminton and cricket regularly but stopped watching television. I also surfed internet to increase my knowledge"[10]
