Broadcast station categories

Nominator's rationale: Eliminate redundant categories to reduce overcategorization. Duplicate entries can be purged. Need help with tagging. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 23:47, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Northern Mariana Islands categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content here is Category:Airports in the Northern Mariana Islands. These empty intermediate categories bring little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 23:24, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty American Samoa categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content here is Category:Airports in American Samoa. These empty intermediate categories bring little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 23:24, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Cook Islands categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content here is Category:Airports in the Cook Islands. These empty intermediate categories bring little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 23:24, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Category:Summits of the Laurentians (administrative region)

Nominator's rationale: Redundant to Category:Summits of Laurentides, in which the sole member article is already placed. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:16, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty New Caledonia categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Lighthouses in New Caledonia (1 "list" article and 1 lighthouse) and Category:Airports in New Caledonia. All the rest forms a long string of empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 22:45, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Guadeloupe categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Lighthouses in Guadeloupe, which is already properly categorized. All the rest forms a long string of empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 22:45, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Wallis and Futuna categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Airports in Wallis and Futuna. These empty intermediate categories bring little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 21:27, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Mayotte categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Airports in Mayotte (1 "list" and 1 airport). These empty intermediate categories bring little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 21:27, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Saint Barthélemy categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Lighthouses in Saint Barthélemy (1 list, no article) and Category:Airports in Saint Barthélemy (1 "list" and 1 airport). All the rest forms a long string of empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 21:27, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

West Indies Power

Nominator's rationale: these 18 categories are for only one article: West Indies Power. The article (last meaningful update in 2008) describes it as a company based in Saint Kitts and Nevis with projects of geothermal energy in Nevis, Dominica and Saba (they are Caribbean islands). It seems from a quick web search that the company never completed any of the projects and does not have any activity since 2014. Its website is offline. Regardless of the actual status of the company, I suggest upmerging these near-empty categories to the nearest non-empty parent. Place Clichy (talk) 16:37, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
It will be excluded from the Geothermal power in X and Electric power in X category series, which does not serve our readers interests. Your proposal fits perfectly for the stand-alone categories, but all those categories are part of the category tree, which will be disrupted. Beagel (talk) 14:43, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
Let's say I'm a reader following that tree: what will I find exactly? I'm going to keep going to category after category and find the same article over and over again which doesn't actually contain relevant information. It's good to disrupt a tree if it doesn't aid navigation. RevelationDirect (talk) 05:12, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Category:Members of Governing Council Of Indian Premier League

Nominator's rationale: Board of Control for Cricket in India seems to be the main article. The current title has a miscapitalised "of" and lacks an article, so if the "Governing Council of the Indian Premier League" is correct, it should be renamed there. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 15:37, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Saba categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content here is Category:Airports in Saba (1 "list" and 1 airport). All the rest forms a long string of empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 13:02, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Sint Maarten categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content here is Category:Airports in Sint Maarten (1 "list" and 1 airport). These empty intermediate categories bring little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 13:02, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Sint Eustatius categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Lighthouses in Sint Eustatius (1 "list" article and 1 article about a city with a lighthouse, not the lighthouse itself) and Category:Airports in Sint Eustatius (1 "list" and 1 airport). All the rest forms a long string of empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 12:24, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Aruba categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Lighthouses in Aruba (1 list and 3 articles) and Category:Airports in Aruba (1 "list" and 1 airport). All the rest forms a long string of empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 12:24, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Curaçao categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Lighthouses in Curaçao (1 list article and 2 articles about geographic features with a lighthouse, not the lighthouse itself) and Category:Airports in Curaçao (1 article). All the rest forms a long string of empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 11:49, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Saint Pierre and Miquelon categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content here is Category:Airports in Saint Pierre and Miquelon. All the rest are empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Place Clichy (talk) 11:49, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Category:Bangsamoro Special Geographic Area

Nominator's rationale: To match the main article of the category. —hueman1 (talk contributions) 09:50, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
@RioHondo: I guess Twinkle doesn't have that feature? —hueman1 (talk contributions) 10:01, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Empty Bonaire categories

Nominator's rationale: the only content in the first category is Category:Lighthouses in Bonaire (1 list article and 1 article about a city with a lighthouse, not the lighthouse itself) and Category:Airports in Bonaire (1 list and 1 airport). All the rest forms a long string of empty categories with little value. Copy-pasting the category structure of large countries to small places with less content is not always a good idea. Category:Misplaced Pages categories named after subdivisions of the United States

WP:SMALLCAT — Consists of only 1 subcategory:
Nominator's rationale: Not a maintenance category populated by template. Duplicates parent's sub-categories and list categories.
WP:CSD#G4 Previous variants have been deleted in the past:

Jewish mathematicians

Nominator's rationale: WP:NOTDEFINING. No suggestion that being Jewish had any particular influence on the work of these mathematicians, per Rathfelder.
See:
William Allen Simpson (talk) 02:57, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Delete, trivial intersection between ethnicity and occupation. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:49, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Thank you for finding the earlier debate. Clearly these categories should never have been created. Rathfelder (talk) 10:23, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Delete per nom, and previous discussions. These categories seem to have been copied from Hebrew Misplaced Pages without consideration for conventions in the English Misplaced Pages. Creators/copyists seem to act as if Jewish was a nationality, which it is not. Place Clichy (talk) 10:59, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Delete no indication that Jewish mathematicians do math differently than Gentile mathematicians. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:55, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Keep, actually there is.—Prisencolin (talk) 02:35, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
  • Furthermore, a head article (List of Jewish mathematicians), as suggested in WP:EGRS, had been created at some point since the first CFD, and there have been no AFD requests since then.--Prisencolin (talk) 03:19, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
The list is irrelevant, EGRS says that it should be a notable topic in its own right. Just a list says nothing in that regard. The point is (in this case) that Jewish mathematicians should have had a different way of doing math than their gentile counterparts, as Carlossuarez46 nicely phrased it. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:55, 9 February 2021 (UTC)
"This is a special collection of problems that were given to select applicants during oral entrance exams to the math department of Moscow State University. These problems were designed to prevent Jews and other undesirables from getting a passing grade. Among problems that were used by the department to blackball unwanted candidate students, these problems are distinguished by having a simple solution that is difficult to find. Using problems with a simple solution protected the administration from extra complaints and appeals. This collection therefore has mathematical as well as historical value.".--Prisencolin (talk) 11:00, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
What you are referring to here is a test conceived to be arbitrary enough so that an examiner could arbitrarily decide which candidate would pass based primarily on whether they liked the candidate or not. This says something about the test, and about the examiner, but it says nothing about the candidates, except the fact that Jews suffered discrimination in Russia. This in a way reminds of "literacy" and other tests used in the Southern U.S. to prevent Black people from voting, using a very similar mechanism. However, the self-contradiction between this argument and your others arguments in this discussion is smothering: at the same time, Jews would have superior cognitive functions applied to mathematics, and comparable lower results in a math test? How is that supposed to get us anywhere? Both notions are just the expression of various discarded prejudices. Place Clichy (talk) 15:47, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
While Ashkenazi Jewish intelligence has been deleted, there is definitely still research out there suggesting a link between Ashkenazi Jews and superior cognitive function, such as in mathematics .--Prisencolin (talk) 11:08, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
In other words, this is a racist category that has been used for racist purposes at Moscow State University, and is supported by IQ "researchers" at University of Utah. The IQ tests themselves have been shown to be biased. (Speaking as somebody with a reported IQ of more than 3 standard deviations above the mean.)
William Allen Simpson (talk) 12:28, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
If descent from Ancient Judea was the defining factor in these mathematics skills, why would this affect only Ashkenazi Jews and not Sephardis? I guess there's nothing really related to Judaism here. Place Clichy (talk) 15:47, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
We do not remove content that can be construed as racist WP:NOTCENSORED and all social science (and science in general), is going to be biased in some way. Some fields (like IQ research) can be criticized more frequently for their biases, but I don’t think that’s a reason to exclude WP:POV depictions of said research on the encyclopedia.

Category:Economics and Statistics Administration images

Nominator's rationale: Unnecessary layer in the United States government images category tree. Contains only one category. Upmerge. Wikiacc () 02:11, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Category:Recipients of the Order of Military Merit (Dominican Republic)

Nominator's rationale: WP:NONDEFINING (WP:PERFCAT, WP:OVERLAPCAT, and WP:OCAWARD)
During the Banana Wars, American troops were routinely stationed in Latin America including during the occupation of the Dominican Republic. US troops in that conflict automatically received Dominican Campaign Medal, an American campaign medal, and they also generally received the Order of Military Merit (Dominican Republic) after the war, ostensibly as a local thank you. The stated purpose of the award was broader, but all 6 of the articles in this category are high ranking US military officials who are already under Category:People of the Banana Wars. The articles generally mention this award in passing with other honours so it doesn't seem defining. There wasn't a list so I created one right here in the main article for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:19, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Category:Order of Stjepan Radić recipients

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OCAWARD)
The Order of Stjepan Radić is given by the president of Croatia "for services and sacrifices for the national and social rights". This category has 3 articles (a President of Croatia, another prominent politician, and a war hero) who are already well categorized. Within the articles, this award gets mentioned in passing and seems to reflect their pre-existing fame rather than be defining. There wasn't a list so I cretated one right here within the main article for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:19, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
