== Same Old Garbage, Different Bag ==

Hey Clarity,

I truly appreciated your comment concerning that ugly discussion that went on concerning money being the "True God of the Jews". Though I'm fairly sure you recognized it, for Clarity's sake (pun intended!) I do hope you realize that my response (in suggesting Barringa rephrase the question) was entirely and completely facetious. The question was indeed one of the most disgusting questions I've ever come across at Misplaced Pages, yet, I suppose you can say I have a rather off-beat way of responding to this sort of thing. Rather than react with honest disgust, I often choose to play along facetiously.

Your far more direct comment was 100% on the money, and was actually very close to the point I was trying to make: that these days, though it's unfashionable to be ''directly'' anti-semitic, rephrase the question as an attack upon Israeli policy rather than a direct attack on Jews, and you've basically said the same thing, only in a far more politically correct way.

In any case, though we may not agree on everything, I'm pretty sure we're of the same mind on this one. And besides, as a fellow Canadian, you have to like me, right? :-) ] 14:34, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

In German

Hi, I think your edits on Sealion were great, but can you put the "in German" stuff back? I hate using it to as I think its clumsy and unneeded but there is some nonce on here me who says it has to be in there, and he has the ear of some admins on irish wikipedia. Thanks Fluffy999 05:49, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Alliance-Union unverse

Hi, Clarityfiend. Thank you for your very productive edits to the Alliance-Union universe page back on May 14. Given that you clearly have value to add, I would like to invite you to contribute any additional expertise you may have to any of the pages in Category:C. J. Cherryh. There are a few of us who regularly edit Cherryh-related pages and it would be great to have someone like you keeping an eye on them as well. Thanks again! Fairsing 02:00, 26 May 2006 (UTC) (Talk)

Merchanter's Luck

Great news! Looks like a good start, too. Depending on how long you think your summaries of the individual books will be, you might want to keep your summaries on the main The Merchanter novels page. If you think your article on each book will be fairly substantial, leave as-is and keep going with the separate page. If the article on the individual book is only going to be a few paragraphs, however, you might consider keeping these as sections of the main article rather than breaking them out. See Alternate Realities (Cherryh) for an example of that. Either way, it's up to you. Keep up the good work! Fairsing 15:29, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

The Black Company

By all means, write away! I actually don't own all the novels of the Black Company, so I was hoping someone else would pitch in - most of my efforts so far have been in Glen Cook's Garrett P.I. series. Good luck, I'll definitely check by later to see how things are going. - Runch 23:08, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Barnacle Bill

Hello Clarityfiend. Excellent work on "Barnacle Bill", a fondly remembered film from my childhood (spent in Ealing not three hundred yards from the studios). But please, it's an Ealing Film, made in England. Unless you can show that it was released in the USA before the home market - which I doubt - it should be listed as "Barnacle Bill", released in the USA as "All at Sea" and not the other way around. Shouldn't it? Peter Maggs 12:08, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Good work. Thanks for making the change. Peter Maggs 07:05, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Boys' Night Out

Clarityfiend, in the case of "Boys' Night Out," it was proper to say the film "stars James Garner" and "was directed by Michael Gordon" rather than "starred" and "was directed." While Gordon directed the movie in the past, Garner continues to star in it whenever someone pops in a DVD. I'm going to go back and collapse the sentences and eliminate the "It," though, anyway.

Not A Matter of Life and Death yet...

Before we get into an edit war, can we discuss the ending? Both SteveCrook and I prefer the other version. IMO, the quotation is rather clumsy and not particularly memorable.

By the way, have you seen what somebody's done to the synopsis for 2001? It looks like I'm going to have to take my scalpel and do a little pruning. Clarityfiend 02:05, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Disagree. The message in the film was straight-forward. And I always considered the declaration by Dr. Reeves the most potent line of dialouge in the entire film. It was the message and whole point of his case and the film's conclusion. I consider the other line ending the summary is (as you put it) "rather clumsy and not particularly memorable." I belive the other line using the remark from the film has more drive to it. -- Jason Palpatine 20:33, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Five Graves to Cairo

Hi,

With due respect, I think you are wrong about Mouche having fallen in love with Bramble. Quite the contrary, she was going to denounce him but ‘patriotism’ got the better of her when she discovered that Schwegler had deceived her. Have another look at the ending, you'll see what I mean – and enjoy the film again!

(BTW, did you really get the impression that Bramble was ‘devastated’ by Mouche’s death? I didn’t.)  :)

I leave it to you to make whatever corrections you think are in order.

Best,

Bardwell 20:43, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Bombastic Blimp

Bombastic? Conolel Blimp? Surely not :) The animal heads on the wall are much discussed, whenever anyone mentions the film they seem to be discussed. But that's often because people nowadays are shocked by the idea of shooting animals and then putting their heads on the wall. I think it's that more than the way it's used as a device to show the passing of time that is why so many people mention it. At least the "much discussed" version and your current version are both better than saying the flash forward was "much heralded". All the best -- SteveCrook 17:27, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Miscellany

Hi, I've made an assortment of changes to C. - mostly referencing, plus some beefing up of the reception and criticism sections. A franc for your thoughts if you have time to cast an eye over them. :) Seems to me we might even fit Sam's piano into the reception section, as an indication of enduring popularity (whether enduring popularity is strictly 'reception' is another question, but it's hard to split into two sections). From the wording in the sentence, I assumed someone had mistakenly used reparations to mean repairs. Sorry if I jumped the gun, I have no knowledge that the repairs weren't paid for by war reparations, or repaired by the Japanese as part of war reparations. Michael Z. 2006-09-29 21:20 Z

A Big Hand for the Little Lady

There's actually very little wrong with it. The addition of the tag may have been a tad over zealous. If you could see your way to replacing the word "bilked" (coloquial slang, I think) I'll take care of my other (very minor) issues and remove the tag. TheMadBaron 06:05, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

That was quick.... TheMadBaron 06:09, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
I've edited and removed the tag. One thing though.... are we to infer that the other players follow Mary to the bank? This is the only way it makes sense to me, but should be overtly stated, IMO. TheMadBaron 06:35, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
Oh, and I'm only guessing that Laredo refers to Laredo, Texas, per the redirect from Laredo. It seems like a reasonable guess, but guessing isn't terribly good practise around here.... TheMadBaron 06:39, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Casablanca (film)

Hi Clarityfriend, whatever your name may be,

you made a major edit removing a section on irony things regarding the Casablanca movie. I think you were right. This irony stuff wasn't really relaevant for the movie. However, you seem to have forgotten to sign your large contribution on the discussion page of the Casablanca movie. I believe it was just only a mistake. I added the link to your user page. I hope that was all right for you! ;)

Best regards

The Citizen of the Galaxy infobox

I reinstated the infobox; those links are on all twelve of the Scribner's juveniles. See comments on Talk:Robert A. Heinlein#Clifford Geary. -- Jim Douglas (contribs) 20:46, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

To be honest, I could take either side of the argument (include them or exclude them). On balance, I think they're useful in showing the relationship between the Scribner's juveniles, which are often discussed as a group. And they do no harm -- the twelve individual articles don't imply that the books form a traditional series. In any event, I announced the change on Talk:Robert A. Heinlein, and the only comment was favorable, so it didn't seem to be a controversial change. Feel free to comment there if you really feel strongly that those links are a problem. -- Jim Douglas (contribs) 21:11, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
Can you put your objections on Talk:Robert A. Heinlein#Clifford Geary (or just start a new topic at the bottom of the page)? While I could take either side of the argument, I think on balance they're useful. -- Jim Douglas (contribs) 21:59, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
I went ahead and moved the new discussion to the bottom of the page as Talk:Robert A. Heinlein#Scribner's juveniles; it looked like it was going to get lost in the middle of that long "Clifford Geary" section. -- Jim Douglas (contribs) 16:27, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Macbeth

Your edits today were mostly spiffy, but you botched one in the para beginning "In England, Malcolm and Macduff plan an invasion...." I'd fix it myself, but I can't fathom what your intention was. El Ingles 00:22, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

You have been awarded these Jelly Beans from -The Doctor- Please, enjoy them.

Hitchcock Cameos

Hi, Not intending to be argumentative but Hitchcock said that he was in all of his films. He was in crowd scenes in the first several. These were not really cameos. At the time it was a cheap "and effective way to fill the screen when extra bodies were needed. Anyone available on the set might be used as an extra. It became an actual "gimmick later on. Can I steal your joke ?

Can I steal your line about giving theoratical answers ?

"Theoretically, FTL is possible. See Tachyon (which in not a Star Trek invention). What you can't do (as mere matter) is reach the speed of light, by either accelerating, or in the case of tachyons, decelerating. (On the other hand, theoratically, StuRat is not possible.)"

Between Two Worlds

Good edits to this article. Thanks. I have two beefs, though:

  1. The removal of the word Nazi to describe the air raid. It's useful to describe who was dropping the aerial bomb.
  2. The removal of the ", the Examiner believes," from the description Ann's suicide. The dialogue of the film clearly shows that Henry did not persuade, or try to persuade, Ann to kill herself (quite the contrary; he tried to dissuade her, repeatedly), and that she joined him entirely voluntarily.

Cheers. Robert K S 11:46, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Why the quibble Nazi vs. German? I mean, what do you see as the distinction? Also, it's rather a major point of the movie that the Examiner doesn't understand that Anne's suicide was also voluntary. She protests and protests and he will hear nothing of it. Do you still have your game on tape? If you were to send it to me for the Archive, I'd enter it and return it to you. (I've done this for a number of other players.) Thanks! Robert K S 23:38, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
(1) nobody who goes on Jeopardy! is dumb—you have to be both a trivia genius and fairly telegenic to pass the audition process—and (2), if you didn't want it on the net, why'd you post it to the talk page of a person who runs a Jeopardy! archive? Unless it's from an early season, odds are we'll have the game in there eventually, (but it would be nice to get it from a player). Cheers! Robert K S 06:48, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Lincoln/Bush

Why did you try to claim I was comparing Bush to Lincoln. I believe it is rather obvious that I was comparing Licoln's push to attack the Confederacy to Polk's push to attack Mexico, the endless years of the Civil War to the way the Mexican-American War kept expanding and expanding, and the public dislike of Lincoln while he was President to the public dislike of Polk while he was President. I just don't see how that all relates to Bush. --Kainaw 06:35, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I took the photo myself. If you can find a better free one, let me know. Wahkeenah 19:06, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I'm thinking my photo could go on that page instead, as it really doesn't add much to the MTM page, and the statue photo from that page could go in its place, as you suggested. That picture of mine was merely trying to be "artistic". I have a "normal" shot of the statue, of course... and it's no better looking than the one in the Honors section.
