The Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast was an autonomous oblast of the Soviet Union created in the Azerbaijan SSR in 1923. In November 1991, the Azerbaijani Parliament abolished the autonomous status of the NKAO. When the Soviet Union collapsed, the whole territory was reaffirmed as part of the newly independent nation of Azerbaijan, but shortly thereafter the Armenian population of the region unilaterally declared independence as the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, although it is not recognized by any state or international government organization, and is de jure part of Republic of Azerbaijan.
