Juozas Lukoševičius (1863-1928), a physicist, and mineralogist continued development of Kazimieras Simonavicius' ideas about rockets. He argued that the Moon could be reached by means of a rocket only. He was the first in the world to describe peculiarities of human weightlessness. He calculated the velocities necessary to overcome the gravity of the Earth. His calculations were confirmed after launching the first satellites into Earth orbit. He was a founder and the rector of the Petersburg Institute of Geography.
