Profile
Karen Hanton is one of the new breed of female entrepreneurs, and is the powerhouse behind toptable. From her initial training and career in HR, she has founded and developed a number of successful ventures over the past 15 years. She was inspired to start toptable after buying and staffing a restaurant business in Fulham in 1998. She realised there was no real way to market a small independent restaurant apart from a blackboard outside the door or a leaflet drop.
Karen realised that there could be potential in creating a marketing tool so that restaurants like hers could promote themselves and increase bookings. She put forward a commercial proposition to several restaurants, inviting them to become part of an online ‘co-operative’.
For the first six months toptable operated from Karen’s beautiful home, with the team ringing restaurants at lunchtime and then in the evening to ascertain how busy they were. Over a two-week period, they realised almost every single restaurant had the capacity to do more business. toptable was born and has expanded rapidly and continues to aggressively increase its rate of growth. Karen is now widely known within the industry as a pioneer within new media, regularly lecturing on the subject and coaching young entrepreneurs.
