The Fairyland Story is a classical arcade platform video game released by Taito in 1985 in its arcade form. The game has two known conversions, to the MSX and X68000 computer families.

In the game, the player guides the little witch Ptolemy through a series of single screen levels, the goal being to eliminate all enemies and proceeding to the next level. Her enemies are usually fantasy beings like orcs, mages or ghosts, but a Pope or Cardinal like enemy appears too.

The game itself wasn't a great success compared to more famous Taito games such as Bubble Bobble or Rainbow Islands but can be considered as one of their ancestors in the Bubble Bobble legacy. Many of Bubble Bobble's gameplay elements and even some graphics and bonuses first appeared in Fairyland Story, and Ptolemy appears as a bonus in Bubble Symphony.

Ptolemy's main weapon is her magic attack, which can turn enemies into cakes for a short while. While in a "caked" form, the enemies can be either be destroyed by further magic attacks or by being dropped off a platform, possibly squashing other enemies below. Doing so awards more points and, sometimes, some extra bonuses.

Ptolemy can sometimes collect some utility bonuses which increase her speed or the power and range of her magic for a short while, or offensive bonuses that, most usually, result in the cake-ification and destruction of all on-screen enemies.

Some of these bonuses are:

  • Red Potion: Music changes, and "Ptolemy" morphs into a red mouse which can kill enemies by collision. Similar in conception with the Bubble Bobble flashing heart bonus.
  • Sunshine Ring: A bright sun appears and destroys all on-screen enemies. This bonus also appears in most Bubble Bobble games, with a very similar effect.
  • Star Ring: Causes a rain of falling stars, which turn all hit enemies into cakes first, and then destroy them. This bonus also appears in most Bubble Bobble games, with a very similar effect.
  • Freezing scroll: Causes all enemies to freeze into ice blocks for a short while.
  • Red Cross: Enables ptolemy to shoot fireballs for a short while, just like in Bubble Bobble.
  • Silver Holy Book: Similar appearance to the equivalent Bubble Bobble bonus, it causes an earthquake which destroys all enemies.
  • Golden Holy Book: Awards an extra life.
