At 8:48 local time, a propeller plane crashed into the northern tower of the ]. About 18 minutes later, another plane (something like a 737) crashed into the southern tower of the building. About 10:00, one of the towers collapsed and half an hour later, the other. The first reports claim at least 1000 people injured.



At least one of the planes was a ] from ]. It was hijacked on its way from ].



Another crash (possibly a helicopter - ] reports it as a 767) has occured at the ] and a bomb hidden in a car detonated at the State Department. There are also vague reports of a similar type from ]. CNN is reporting a confirmed plane crash outside ].



There were reports that the palestinian group ] (]) took responsibility for the crashes, but this was denied by a senior officer of the group soon after. Next in line to claim responsibility were the talibans of ].



All airplane traffic was grounded and the stock exchange on ] has been closed. The ], the ] headquarters, and the ] in ] are evacuated, along with parts of ] and ]. ]s are patroling the air above Washington with orders to shoot down any planes still in the air.



As a side effect, just about every news site on the Internet slowed down to unusability as everyone tried to find more information about the plane crashes.

What is the population of the building? This happened after 9AM New York time, so I assume everyone was at work. The building was probably full.



I went searching this morning for information about the building itself. So far, I haven't found much of use. Perhaps we can fill in background information on the building(s) in question?

11AM Eastern - Both towers have collapsed. Buildings held 50,000 people. Hundreds of thousands of people in neighboring buildings.
