The game takes place between the fourth (]) fifth (]) seasons of the ] TV show. The game also serves as the third ] videogame.

== Gameplay ==
The story starts off with Ronin stealing the ninjas' memories. The ninjas now have to smash, build and explore their way through a daring adventure and stop Ronin's evil plans for good! The main antagonist is Ronin while the Dark Samurai serve as the evil clique of the game. The player controls one of the main characters from a third-person perspective, primarily fighting enemies, solving puzzles, and collecting Lego 'studs', the game's form of currency. There are a total of 68 playable characters in the game (excluding multiple variants/outfits of all characters).

To complete Lego Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin, the player will need to unlock and use following abilities, powers and characters which can be used in the game after being unlocked:

* Cole: Earth, Quake pad, Strength
* Jay: Lightning, Charge generators, Fix things
* Kai: Fire, Light torches, Melt Ice/Gold
* Zane: Ice, Extinguish fires, Freeze Water
* ]: Green, Green pad, Dispel darkness
* Sensei Wu: Staff, Turns tiles and Acrobat poles
* Nya: Grapple
* Misako: Red X
