Hey, sorry to bother you, but I was hoping that you would do me a favor. I wrote the article on "Beautiful Ohio" pretty much from scratch and was hoping that you would take a look at it and tell me what you think. I saw that you were an administrator and were moderating the debate over the "The" in "The Ohio State University" (I think that you definitely ought to have it, but that's another topic...). I just wanted someone with a lot of experience to look over my work and make sure it was up to par. This was the first time I did any serious editing and wanted to make sure I cited everything properly and whatnot. Anyway, if you don't have time that's fine, I definitely understand. My Talk Page
This is the talk page of Eagle_101. I now have a linux distro installed!I respond to all comments here, as it becomes difficult to keep up with the volume otherwise; if I believe immediate notice is necessary, I may copy the response to your talk page.
I am an admin on both the english wikipedia (here) and on the meta wiki. Be sure your request belongs here; most routine requests dealing with permissions (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser stuff) should go to a noticeboard rather than an individual talk page. Disputes between editors, especially content disputes, belong in formal dispute resolution, not here; if you raise them here, I'm just going to say "I don't get involved" and send you to dispute resolution, so save time and head there now. I archive obsessively, often several times a day; if you do not see a comment you left here, it has probably been archived, please look in my archives. Users are welcome to bring archived discussions back if they have additional comments. If you left a comment and didn't get a response from me, ninety-nine times out of one hundred, I was busy and forgot to answer; poke me, and I'll be sure to do it. However, if you left a comment that you expected would elicit an angry response, and instead received no response, then I probably didn't forget, I just didn't respond. I reserve the right to archive personal attacks, incivility, or canvassing separately and immediately. Severe instances may simply be deleted. Others are encouraged to help out and respond to posts here. Plenty of angry and clueless posts find their way here, and to my email; in the vast majority, I find that the writer has misunderstood some difficult aspect of Misplaced Pages. Though I may seem to have everything under control, I appreciate having others help out and back me up. I am a VandalProof moderator. If you have problems with VandalProof, please ask. If you came here because I removed a link that you posted onto Misplaced Pages. Please read and understand this first. Archives |

The Only Ones
It is not under a spam attack. That link has been there for some time, and is about the subject. The wiki policy states links to discussion forums are acceptable if they are solely about the subject matter. It is. It isn't a random forum. A spam bot deleted it without checking and has now repeatedly delete it numerous times, and another editor is repeatedly removing it in error.
172.201.152.213 15:47, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Err no, a sysop has been forced to block several IP ranges to prevent this insertion. I don't know if it has been there before, but that bot cannot delete links, only revert (undo) link additions. If you want the link in the article, discuss on the article's talk page. What you are doing is spamming one link. Remember we are an encyclopedia, not a place to direct people to forums, thats what google (and other search engines) are for. —— Eagle101 15:52, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
I have tried to get in to dialogue with these editors, but they have refused to reply. What can I do with people like that? Somehow most previous edits have been removed. The link had been there for months - i haven't just put it in. An editor has decided to delete every single network54.com link. I have been reinserting the link because it was deleted with no real reason - it falls within that Wikipolicy as far as I can see. And they keep re-deleting it offering no genuine reason or even checking the link. I understand Misplaced Pages isn't here to advertise websites, but it is the most active Only Ones/Perrett forum and is a course for news.
172.201.152.213 15:57, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Show me where you have tried to talk. All I see is multiple IPs used to insert a link, the hallmark of spam. If this can be clarified, that would be useful. Thankyou. —— Eagle101 15:59, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
I unfourtunately can't show you, as somehow they have deleted about 2 days of edits somehow. I repeatedly asked them in the edit comment section to check the link and read their talk pages before deleting the link again before deleting. I wasn't even aware anyone could do that, and they have done it twice. After they reverted the edits about 5 times, those edits disappeared. I also left messages on their user page, which they wouldn't repond to and deleted them!
172.201.152.213 16:03, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Here are several messages on the talk page of the same user:
http://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:Shadowbot#The_Only_Ones http://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:Shadow1#THE_ONLY_ONES
User Betacommand deleted my comments on their talk page, and refused to respond. And the only reason I used different IP addresses was before this user repeatedly marked me as a spammer, whilst ingoring my comments, so I could not reinstate the link.
172.201.152.213 16:06, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, shadowbot is an automated bot, it can't talk back to you. What I would suggest is discussion on the talk page of the article (here). But you can see that at least 2 people have opposition to that link, so it is probably best for you to try to talk it out with those people, rather then just trying to constantly re-insert the link, which only rubs off as spam. —— Eagle101 16:10, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
I did leave a message on their normal user account, but they didn't respond there either. I am amazed and disgusted that "Betacommand" can hide his appaling behavior. There isn't any legitimate opposition to the link - it was removed by a spam bot, then Betacommand got in on the act, and then another use reverted my edit as they must have seen the repeated edit reverting. No one with any interest in the subject matter has tried to remove the link. As you are an established editor, would you be willing to add the link again on my behalf?
172.201.152.213 16:18, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, as I said, try to ask on the article talk page. —— Eagle101 16:34, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
mediawiki blacklist
Hi, I just found out the wesbite cvisiontech.com is on the MediaWiki spam blacklist. NishKid64 referred me to you, and I was wondering if you knew why this wesbite is on that list.
Thank you, CVISION
- Err... what do you mean I was able to insert the link here. Just a side note, please make sure you follow our relevant guidelines on conflict of interest and external link guidelines when dealing with links and wikipedia. Thankyou. —— Eagle101 23:22, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
unitedfutures.com blacklist
Hi Eagle 101. We are on the blacklist. It does not look to me like there was EVER any blatant spamming of any kind what-so-ever. It looks to me like our old (now fired) web company tried to add a very FEW (1-3) helpful appropriate links to a few relevant wikipedia pages. One was a very useful quote page that STILL REMAINS. What I don't understand, is there are other companies similar in nature, adding way more spammy links than we are, and they are not blacklisted. Is it appropriate to ban someone without any warning at all, when less than a few links to very appropriate pages were added? Its one thing to remove a link or page, or dispute it if a moderator says no, but why ban the site if very useful attempts were made to improve the quality of the page and increase the user experience? That is very extreme in my opinion. Can we please have this removed? It is not fair in nature at all. Everything looks to have been made in an appropriate way. RunnerD 18:58, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've never banned anyone, and spamming of any sort is not tolorated. I will double check the reasoning behind the blacklist though. Otherwise I would suggest using m:Local whitelisting to get parts of the site whitelisted. In any case, when dealing with links and wikipedia, I ask you to mind our conflict of interest guidelines. Thankyou. —— Eagle101 23:25, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, someone (you)? requested on the metablacklist to have it taken off, and I replied with a Not done. If you have a use for this link as a reference, see m:local whitelisting. This is not going to come off for at least a couple months, that was a fairly determined spam attack, we don't even know if we got all the linkspam that that guy added. Thankyou. —— Eagle101 23:30, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
I will ask again in a few months. Again, it only looks like a few helpful links were added. A few were disputed, and a few were changed, all normal things. I still really can't understand the blacklist. I have seen much worse. RunnerD 18:27, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
De-commercializing a Misplaced Pages Page
Sir:
Claritas Inc. had its page removed by you a couple of months ago for being too commercial. There was no further explanation beyond that, and we made a second attempt to post a page with edited copy to no avail. It, too, was removed by you obstensibly for again being too commercial. In checking the pages of some of Claritas' competitors, I discovered that their product names are included in the copy and hotlinked to another Misplaced Pages page. I believe this may be the rub with regards to the Claritas page because our product names were hotlinked to the website for that product. If we were to either remove the hyperlink or create more Misplaced Pages pages for the product name, could we be reinstated?
Further, do you save the copy that you removed, so that it can be returned to the the appropriate party (me) for editing, or did you delete it all together?
I appreciate your reply.

- No, because you want an article for the sole intent of promoting your product or organization. If someone finds you notable, they will make an article. I would suggest reviewing out guidelines on conflict of interest. Thankyou. —— Eagle101 23:17, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick response. I also contacted the guy who does the web site for some help in figuring out what happened; he said he didn't spam anyone. He's looking into it. - Sorry, this article. Stretford, in the Sport section. ---- Eric 20:27, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- I never supposed that wikipedia was a link farm, I'm simply trying to understand why you deleted the links so that I don't make the same mistake in the future.
- Was it the format of the link that attracted your attention? Would it be acceptable to include the links you've deleted as external references? I think they contain useful local information but I'm just not certain what it is that you're objecting to. Is it linking out the main body of the article to another web site? ---- Eric 21:00, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Its not a reference, its a link to a particular club, which may or may not pass WP:EL (really give it read :) ). To me that section is reading as an advertisement for that particular club. Imagine what would happen to that article if *every* organization/club had a mention on that page? Then its no longer an encyclopedia article, but rather just some local listing. Am I making any sense? Cheers! —— Eagle101 21:47, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that explanation, I think I'm beginning to understand now. There are two or three other similar references I've inserted elsewhere that I'll now remove as well. :) ---- Eric 21:59, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Bodie Ingelvie
I met a young writer named Bodie Ingelvie, and was amazed by his story. I put up a page, but you took it down. There are many writers on Wiki, why not him? - Hello, thanks for asking, you will need a user account to create a page, but basically what you have to do is use reliable sources with citations to demonstrate how this writer is important and or notable. Cheers! —— Eagle101 01:53, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Just as the comments say, I'm adding official and non-partisan links to US government officials. If you want to help, step 2 is to expand out the 'stub people'. Step 3 is to work on the state government people. Flatterworld 03:57, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
I haven't noticed much of anything at all talked over on that wikiproject. I did find a surprising number of articles (for Reps) that haven't been updated since the 2004 election. Not just the information, but also the links (e.g., using Issues2002 rather than the current url). Flatterworld 03:57, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok. I'll finish up New York tonight (so I don't forget where I am), and then post in the project tomorrow. Maybe we can get some enthusiasm going before everyone gets caught up in summer activities. :-) Flatterworld 04:05, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I've been told to come to you from Ryulong. The reason is is that a Shadowbot keeps reverting my edits to a external website. Message invoving WT:WPSPAM
Dear Eagle,
I have been a contributor to wikipedia, specifically on the listing of my native island of Milos: http://en.wikipedia.org/Milos . On several occasions, I corrected some existing information (corrected spelling of names of some villages) added missing information (such as additional villages of the island), contributed book references (Prof. Colin Renfrew's notable books) and even removed vandalism, i.e., after someone wrote: "Ellgal imgrant from Kroatia" under "Description".
I have even contributed on external links, by editing errors and removing irrelevant links that would have been considered link spam by most logical people. Lately, however, I have been a victim of persecution by a couple of your editors, namely VSmith and Hu12.
I admit I have not read ALL wikipedia rules and I have no idea how absurd, nonsensical, or self-conflicting they might be (and it sounds as if some of them are) simply because I have a life and no time to read every web site's rules. I try to make decisions in life based on common sense. Invariably, however, I find that common sense isn't very common.
I'd like to submit that you ought to know your enemies, and recognize, as opposed to persecute, your friends. What Hu12 and VSmith have done, is to alienate a contributor and a wikipedia friend through hypocrisy and unjustified power trips. It seems that you were rather quick to respond to Hu12's and VSmith's outrageous accusations:
1) My links are not spam. They are relevant, informative, non-commercial, popular websites about the island of Milos, and therefore appropriate as external links on the wikipedia listing: http://en.wikipedia.org/Milos . To equate my websites with the garbage spammers and vandals inflict on wikipedia is gravely insulting to me, and hurts wikipedia's credibility.
Some of your editors obviously do not know, or have an extremely loose definition of, what spam is. I'd be happy to forward to your editors a few hundreds of the garbage I receive in my personal mailbox daily, in order to educate them as to what spam really is.
2) I was informed that I posted "link spam", and my contributions were summarily deleted. I countered that my websites were not commercial. After seeing my contributions disappear a couple of times, I was informed that I should not be "touting my own stuff" so I stopped. Others, totally unrelated to me on either a personal or business level, on their own free will, have added references to the aforementioned websites, but their contributions were summarily deleted as well. It seems that reason is not the criteria here but rather, some editors' egomaniac agenda.
3) I was notified not to post in external links again, but to discuss the matter on the editor's talk page. What a joke! My concerns were not addressed, I only received laconic responses, my last post there was deleted as well, and I was asked to discuss the matter on some other, different, wikipedia forums. A classic case of passing the buck, in other words.
4) Hu12 posted an outrageous comment on your talk page: "...the spammer (who owns all these sites) essentialy states he will not stop". That's an outright lie. I've kept records of all posts of mine on wikipedia, even posts unscrupulously deleted by your editors, and I challenge anyone to point out where I've claimed any such thing.
With all the time he expended removing my contributions, Hu12 obviously should know better. Calling me a "spammer" is yet another grave insult against my person. Hu12 should be ashamed of himself. So offended I am over this unjustifiable accusation and defamation of character, that I seriously consider this as grounds for a lawsuit.
A comment regarding myself on VSmith's talk page was the I have not made any other contributions. This is of course, not true. I simply have changed ISPs in the past, inheriting different IPs as a result. How short-sighted can a person be, to assume that because I have not signed up with a wikipedia handle, I must have made no contributions in the past, whatsoever?
5) Another outrageous comment by Hu12: "...who is also posting under all the above IP's". This is also a lie, which is as outrageous as it is absurd. Take a look at the IPs in question: In order for me to post from these different IPs, I'd have to travel to multiple locations half across the globe in a matter of a few hours! Again, Hu12 should be ashamed of himself, that is, if he had a shred of decency in him.
It has been other people, on their own free will, adding these same websites under external links, obviously because they feel these websites are worthwhile contributions. I have no relationship to those people. In the meantime, discussion is stifled, and rampant accusations fly. So now, since the supposedly "commercial" character of my websites and "conflict of interest" claims of your editors have been totally obliterated, I'd be curious to find out what VSmith's and Hu12's *new* excuse for deleting the relevant and informative Milos external links is or will be.
In any case, I hereby demand that you, unconditionally:
a) remove any and ALL references on wikipedia to my websites as associated with spam or black/brown/block lists, b) retract any of your submissions to 3rd parties including but not limited to websites, where my websites are portrayed as link spam, c) remove ALL accusations on wikipedia against my person as a "spammer", and d) have an official apology issued to me from wikipedia, regarding the lies of your editors, defamation of my character, and misrepresentation of my contributions.

A Small Favor...
Thanks so much for your time. Gbms86 04:57, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

As detailed on meta, the spammer edited using his IP on a foreign language wiki here. I actually listed that IP for the open proxy checking a couple of days ago believing it to be JB196, so you might want to temporarily block the IP pending it being checked anyway. Thanks.
