Problems with article

Just came here because R4 in England just broadcast an interview/ narrative of what happened with Moss Hills as part of a series 'life changing' https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000v5ng. His account does not to seem to match up especially well with this article. In particular I notice, that the captain did not abandon ship but stayed onboard, albeit being rather useless. I agree with comments below that there doesn't seem to be any official report linked of what happened, which presumably there must have been. Sandpiper (talk) 08:46, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

There is a separate BBC News article today accompanying this programme: see here. Quite a bit of additional detail. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 19:09, 6 April 2022 (UTC)

Article casually mentions that the ship received a bomb threat before departure. Um, what? DancesWithGrues (talk) 06:25, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

What does "MTS" stand for in this context? According to Ship prefix it stands for Marine towage and salvage/tugboat, which makes no sense. This is a ferry not a tugboat. DancesWithGrues (talk) 14:55, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

Hmm: the contents of this article bear an uncanny resemblance to . Does this need to be fixed? Senderspace 22:51, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

While researching the reason for the leak in the sea chest I noticed similar wording on a number of sites. It's hard to know who the origiginal author is. --AussieLegend 03:02, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

This article is not very informative, it lacks many important details. For example the 'Aftermath' is pointless, it is devoid of any useful information such as the actual fate of the captian.24.201.140.3 00:32, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

@AussieLegend,I looked at an online simulation on Youtube according to it a corner of the Sea Chest was rusted.

Removed Text

I have noticed this page has been vandalized and I have removed the sentence "Cowardly captain James Mayne fled, leaving women, children, and his own pet rats for dead." from the opening paragraph of this article.Tundrawinds 16:47, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

According to Time, he left his pet dog and canary aboard to be rescued by one of the entertainers who was left to command the rescue effort. That article, however, states that our illustrious Capt. Avranas departed by helicopter whereas all other sources mention he left by lifeboat (one source even mentions that the Avranas & Crew wasted a second lifeboat to haul luggage). Jonah

MOSS HILL was also on the MS Achille Lauro when it collided and suffered a huge fire. See CH4 documentary "Why ships sink" 01/04/2012 21:00 82.21.204.60 (talk) 20:43, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Misquote

The Captain actually said "If some people like to stay, they can stay.", vs. the quoted "If some people want to stay, they can stay." ('like' vs 'want') The reference contains this misquote, which is why I didn't edit the change in the article text. I have just listened to the quote twice on TV, and clearly heard the word 'like' and not 'want'. The quote was also translated onscreen as 'like', so there's no doubt about it. As I said, the reference is wrong, and who knows, maybe their source was wrong also. 99.92.102.115 (talk) 06:45, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Slow-motion edit-warring

Resolved

Brimspark is edit-warring in slow motion (1, 2) adding material from an unreliable source which is a personal website by one of the survivors of the sinking titled "Tracy Hills: My story of the sinking". Example:

Moss and Tracy Hills and four others were recognized for their bravery and valour.[http://www.oceanossinking.com/index.php?page_id=16

Let's get this straight: The website belongs to Tracy Hills and the edit says that Moss and Tracy Hills and four others were recognized for their bravery and valour.. In other words Brimspark's edit uses Tracy Hill's personal website to add praise for Tracy Hill. In addition, other material Brimspark is introducing is unsourced. Let's get serious. I will take this to WP:ANI if this editing behaviour continues. Δρ.Κ.  17:48, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for finally letting me know what was wrong with the article, you could have just removed that sentence in question and left the rest of my edits intact. For instance I went to the New York Times for the captain's story and you just wholesale reverted that too. I still think it was an extremely brave thing that the Hills did to save the passengers after the cowardly crew fled. Brimspark (talk) 03:34, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
@Brimspark: Please leave the sarcastic remarks. I told you in my edit summary ""My story of the sinking"? No thanks" meaning that Tracy Hills' "My story of the sinking" was not acceptable. Sorry that you didn't get the idea that you cannot use Tracy Hills' website to praise Tracy Hills' actions, let alone my 3RR message on your talk advising you to stop the edit-warring and discuss on talk. The other substantial edit you made was adding He justified his actions saying that the "ship was in darkness and the batteries on the crew's walkie-talkies had died, meaning that he had no communications with his crew or with other rescue craft" which is unsourced. The existing New York Times reference mentions nothing about your edit. You did not add any other reference to the NYT. What NYT are you talking about when you say For instance I went to the New York Times for the captain's story...? I also see that you restored the unsourced edit. This is continuing the edit-war. I will remove it if you do not provide a source for He justified his actions saying that the "ship was in darkness and the batteries on the crew's walkie-talkies had died, meaning that he had no communications with his crew or with other rescue craft", which is not in the existing NYT reference. Δρ.Κ.  03:54, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, here is the NYT source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brimspark (talkcontribs) 04:45, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. It is resolved then. Best regards. Δρ.Κ.  04:53, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
Admittedly I remembered doing the edit in haste, and forgot to add the second NYT source to the existing NYT reference. Glad we cleared up this misunderstanding. Brimspark (talk) 13:13, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
So am I. Thank you again. Δρ.Κ.  17:27, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Official Reports?

Has anyone been able to locate South African/Greek Maritime safety reports on this incident, they should be reliable sources. 58.7.96.218 (talk) 01:20, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Yiannis Avranas merger

MERGE - Avranas is a one-eventer. He has no relevance to the world beyond his role in this incident. - Frankie1969 (talk) 12:44, 27 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello Frankie1969, sorry for writing a bit late but I don't check this article so often. I don't agree witht the merge. As with Francesco Schettino, the article about Yiannis Avranas has a separate relevance, as proven by many cited relevant and international sources. --Lucas (talk) 04:47, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
I will restore this main article in the next weeks if no one disagree but leaving the good paragraph in the Oceanos' article, which is still interesting and appropriate. :) --Lucas (talk) 17:05, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
I absolutely disagree. If you're concerned about Francesco, I'll work on merging him next. - Frankie1969 (talk) 12:57, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Frankie1969 I absolutely disagreed with your merging: you deleted information, you didn't notify this action to anyone, and merged the pages based on "silent consent", which is - according to the guidelines - "the weakest form of consensus". Considering that your action is now disputed, according to the guidelines, the page should be reverted and a proactive discussion should be started. We all will listen to your opinion with no biases, but please follow what WP:CONS and WP:MERGE says, without imposing your point of view. Thanks. --Lucas (talk) 22:02, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
Ugh, I know, I know, WP would rather err on the side of too many articles than too few. I still say it's telling that not a single editor cared enough about this guy to get involved for nearly 3 months (from when I set the merger tag to when I did the merge). IMO, 99% of one-eventers should be merged into the parent event. - Frankie1969 (talk) 16:22, 26 July 2017 (UTC)
