Von Wüllersleben hailed from a ] family of ] whose seat was in ]. It is unknown when he joined the Teutonic Order, although he served in ] until 1215. He was a close friend of Grand Masters ] and ], allowing him to take part in secret diplomatic missions for the Order. He spent 1244 in ] where he served under the ], ].

Günther von Wüllersleben was chosen Grand Master by the Order's ] in 1249 or 1250 in ]. ], the unsuccessful choice of the pro-papal party led by ], was made Landmeister of Prussia. As the supreme authority of the Order, von Wüllersleben resided in ] and probably never left Acre.
Gunther hailed from a ] family from ] in ], ]. He joined the Teutonic Order at an unknown date, but was serving in ] by 1215. He had close connections to various grandmasters. In 1244, it is documented that he was in ], as well as in 1246 when he was present with Grandmaster ].


He may be the identity behind three Gunthers mentioned in records around the time, which means that he may have also been ] of ] around 1218, Marshall of the Teutonic Order from around 1228 to 1230, and land commander of ] from 1240 to 1244.<ref name=":0" />
Although little is known of his tenure as the Grand Master, von Wüllersleben tried to reconcile the papal and imperial parties which were demoralizing the monastic life within the Order. He often sent missions to distant provinces to supervise discipline. For a short time, he was able to overcome the division within the Order's chapter to which the pro-papal fraction was leading.


In 1249 or 1250, Gunther was elected Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order. Little is known about his reign, but he is thought to have attempted to reconcile the pro and anti-papal factions within the order. He died in Acre on May 3 or 4, 1252.
Von Wüllersleben died in Acre.

Gunther von Wüllersleben (died May 3 or 4, 1252) was the eighth grandmaster of the Teutonic Order, reigning from 1249 or 1250 to 1252.

Biography

Gunther hailed from a ministerialis family from Hersfeld Abbey in Bad Hersfeld, Hesse. He joined the Teutonic Order at an unknown date, but was serving in Acre by 1215. He had close connections to various grandmasters. In 1244, it is documented that he was in Prussia, as well as in 1246 when he was present with Grandmaster Heinrich von Hohenlohe.

He may be the identity behind three Gunthers mentioned in records around the time, which means that he may have also been Komtur of Brindisi around 1218, Marshall of the Teutonic Order from around 1228 to 1230, and land commander of Apulia from 1240 to 1244.

In 1249 or 1250, Gunther was elected Grandmaster of the Teutonic Order. Little is known about his reign, but he is thought to have attempted to reconcile the pro and anti-papal factions within the order. He died in Acre on May 3 or 4, 1252.
