In 1967, Jose Olivares, a professor by vocation but with a strong entreprenuerial sprit, together with his son-in-law Dr. Vicente M. Santos, established the Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. Financed from a loan from the Development Bank of the Philippines, he was able to build a 20-bed general hospital, which immediately became the primary provider of health care services for the people of Valenzuela and its neighboring towns.

In 1967, Jose C. Olivares, with his son-in-law, Dr. Vicente M. Santos Sr., founded the Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in Valenzuela City. Mr. Olivares, who was a professor at the ] of the Philippines envisioned a dream for Fatima. He set his eyes on transforming the Our Lady of Fatima from a general hospital to a medical complex that will be the training ground for health care providers. In 1973, the Our Lady of Fatima College of Nursing was established. A 3-storey school building and a dormitory was constructed to house the initial enrolment of 180 students. These students eventually graduated and took the nursing board examinationss in 1976 where Fatima College of Nursing garnered an unprecedented 100 percent passing average. Since then, excellent performance in national board exams became a tradition and trademark of Fatima.


In 1979 the Fatima College of Medicine was established, with its pioneer batch graduating in 1983. In the 1990s the college diversified, starting programs in ], ], ], ], ], ] and ].
In preparation for the establishment of the College of Medicine, a modern five-storey building was built and the Our Lady of Faima Hospital was upgraded to a 150-bed tertiary hospital. By June 1979, Fatima College of Medicine welcomed its first batch of medical students. Since then, the College of Medicine has made its mark in medical education by producing highly-skilled doctors. It also became the first and only Philippine medical school to have an institution to institution clerkship program with a foreign hospital. Since 1988 to 2000, the College of Medicine has sent over a hundred medical students for clerkship training in the US.

History

In 1967, Jose C. Olivares, with his son-in-law, Dr. Vicente M. Santos Sr., founded the Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in Valenzuela City. In 1973 he expanded the hospital to include a nursing college.

In 1979 the Fatima College of Medicine was established, with its pioneer batch graduating in 1983. In the 1990s the college diversified, starting programs in computer science, maritime education, education, psychology, biology, tourism and business.

The college became a university in December 2002, with Dr. Vicente M. Santos Sr. as its founding president.

The next years further saw an increase in infrastructure development. New buildings were established in the Valenzuela and Quezon City campuses, with additional nursing virtual laboratories and simulators. Fatima's College of Nursing was designated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a Center of Development in 2008. Fatima's expansion continued with the establishment of additional campuses in Antipolo, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, and Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

The university submitted itself to the CHED's Institutional Quality Assurance through Monitoring and Evaluation (IQuAME) in 2008. In 2009 it was placed in Category A(t) as a mature teaching university.

The CHED granted autonomous status to the university for five years from March 11, 2009, to March 30, 2014.

Athletics

The 'Fatima Phoenix' commonly called Team Fatima are chosen athletes who compete in basketball, volleyball, badminton, taekwondo, cheerdancing, track and field, chess, billiards, and swimming. Their students represent the university in NAASCU, PRISAA and other competitions.
