Nationality

It appears he holds sole Japanese citizenship, though he is based in Taiwan. I have updated the lead sentence accordingly. Though nationality wording tends to be on a case-by-case basis, there are notable examples like Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif where it was agreed upon that they should be called "British" because that is the sole citizenship they hold.

Furthermore, AFAIK, Japan has strict laws against holding dual citizenship, and he's said that he's Japanese. Clear Looking Glass (talk) 12:10, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

citizenship

He also holds a Taiwanese citizenship. He is half Japanese and half Taiwanese 39.1.26.26 (talk) 05:26, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

He resides in Taiwan but doesn't hold Taiwanese citizenship. That's why he did not qualify for the "Taiwan Outstanding Filmmaker of the Year" at the Golden Horse Awards in 2008. NoCringe (talk) 07:51, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
