It appears he holds sole Japanese citizenship, though he is based in Taiwan. I have updated the lead sentence accordingly. Though nationality wording tends to be on a case-by-case basis, there are notable examples like Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif where it was agreed upon that they should be called "British" because that is the sole citizenship they hold.
He resides in Taiwan but doesn't hold Taiwanese citizenship. That's why he did not qualify for the "Taiwan Outstanding Filmmaker of the Year" at the Golden Horse Awards in 2008. NoCringe (talk) 07:51, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
