Protoklissi is in the municipality of ]. The location is near the heart of the prefectural mainland and is centrally located between the Bulgarian and the Turkish borders as well as the ]. Protokklisi is linked with the road connecting ]/] (Alexandroupoli - Soufli - Orestiada - Ormenio) and ] with no road connecting Bulgaria or any trails, the trails are fenced. Its 2001 population was 669 for the village and 1,120 for the municipal district. The area are hilly and forested while the mountains dominate the west, most of the area are forested, farmlands are within the village.

The name of the village during the ] rule was Bashklise (Başkilise in Turkish, Башклисе ''Bašklise'' in Bulgarian). The village was founded by the ] Turks and named it after a Bulgarian population, its name was known as (Башклисе ''Bašklise'', Turkish: ''Başkilise''). In the 1880s, it had a functional Bulgarian building. In 1830, it had 100 Bulgarians, in 1878 and 1912 (according to ], the demographic statistics had 100 Bulgarian exarchists, during the ], it annexed to ] from Turkey ending a few centuries of Ottoman Rule, it had 105 and 55 in 1920. In the same time, it was annexed to ] and the last of the Bulgarians were pushed northward, During the ], refugees east of the Evros river and from Asia Minor arrived into the village. It became entirely Protoklissi after the annexation. After ] and the ], many of its buildings were rebuilt. Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s. The village's lost three fourths of its population between 1981 and 1991 and two thirds between 1991 and 2001 totaling to nearly half between 1981 and 2001, its inhabitants left for the larger cities and outside Greece.

After a brief period of Bulgarian rule between 1913 and 1919, it became part of Greece. As a result its Bulgarian population was exchanged with Greek refugees, mainly from today's Turkey.

Protokklisi (Greek: Πρωτοκκλήσι meaning the first church, Bulgarian: Башклисе) is a village and a community in the central part of the Evros regional unit in Greece. Protoklissi is in the municipal unit of Orfeas. In 2021 its population was 776 for the community, including the village Agriani. Protokklisi is located about 15 km northwest of Soufli, in the valley of a right tributary of the river Evros.

History

The name of the village during the Ottoman rule was Bashklise (Başkilise in Turkish, Башклисе Bašklise in Bulgarian). In 1830, it had 100 Bulgarian families, in 1878 and 1912 the village had 105 Bulgarian families. According to professor Lyubomir Miletich, the 1912 population contained 100 Bulgarian families.

After a brief period of Bulgarian rule between 1913 and 1919, it became part of Greece. As a result its Bulgarian population was exchanged with Greek refugees, mainly from today's Turkey.
