Hi - I noticed the blanking of the recently created page, ], which you reverted a few moments before I was about to. However, I then spotted that the editor who blanked it was also the article's creator, and who had just had the page turned down under ] by {{ping|SwisterTwister}}. With a couple of referenced added prior to its blanking, the band still doesn't seem to meet notability criteria as far as I can see. So I was wondering whether this was a cynical attempt by the page creator to ensure its retention, or alternatively a genuine attempt to blank and remove the page. I'm not sure how to proceed with this, so thought I'd flag it for more experienced editors to consider. Regards. ] (]) 19:45, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi,

== Response to one of "my" edits ==
I don't think that I made an unconstructive edits to Misplaced Pages. My intention was to improve the article, because as it is written, it is wrong. I am from Bulgaria and I think I know our history quite well. For example, there is no single evidence that Bulgars were Turkic people, as the very first sentence of the article states. This is misleading. Bulgarians were Huns indeed, and they could be trace through our ruling dynasty Uokil back to China and the Yuezhi people, who were European nomads (Tocharians) in northern China. The article in its present form is also misleading about our language and religion. Why are you doing this?

Hello, you sent me a message recently about one of my edits that I made, and it seems like I had "edited" a page on the Origins of Albanians. However, I do not remember ever making an edit, nor have I made an edit ever (as far as I know). Maybe you can shed some light on the situation?

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." We have ] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, ] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

You closed the discussion on the fair use use of ] as delete. But you didn't explain your reasoning. I think nominator {{ping|Stefan2}} takes an extreme view of fair use.

== ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message ==
You did not explain what you thought was wrong with my explanation of how Stefan erred in this discussion. I did not see or respond to his final argument in the discussion -- which I think was nonsense. I don't think Stefan2 has made enough effort to understand the argument of those who disagree with them.

<div class="ivmbox " style="margin-bottom: 1em; border: 1px solid #AAA; background-color: ivory; padding: 0.5em; display: flex; align-items: center; ">
People have a right to make "fair use" of images that meet certain criteria.
<div class="ivmbox-image" style="padding-left:1px; padding-right:0.5em; flex: 1 0 40px;">]</div>
When an image meets the criteria for fair use people have a right to re-use that image, without regard to the photographer's potential loss of income.
<div class="ivmbox-text">
I've done my best to understand Stefan2's arguments. Stefan2, however, seems to think we can't allow wikipedia contributors to make fair use of images, when one of our readers might re-use the image in a context in which the fair use criteria weren't met.

When we re-use an image under a CC or GFDL license, we honor our obligations to state it is being re-used under that free license, even though our readers might re-use that image, ignoring the obligation to state it is being re-used under a free license. We all understand that we can't be held responsible for how our readers use images, so long as our use clearly states their obligations.

I see our obligations in just the same way when we re-use an image that legitimately meets the fair use criteria. Our readers may see a fair use image that we are making legitimate fair use of, and see a context where they too could re-use it in a manner that is a legitimate fair use. When our readers re-use an image, and their re-use also meets the criteria for fair use, then neither the WMF or are reader is, in the wording of ] making use of the image ''"in a manner that is likely to replace the original market role of the original copyrighted material."''

</div>
Legitimate fair use trumps the photographer's right to make a profit from their photo. States grant photographers, and their estates, a (limited) right to make a profit from their photos. They do so because doing so is seen as in the public's best interest. And states also grant a right to make fair use of images that meet narrow criteria, because they think fair use is in the public's best interest. I suggest it is obvious that the right to make fair use has to take precedence over the photographer's right to make a profit, or no image could ever be used in a fair use context.

== ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message ==
Legitimate fair use -- use of an image that genuinely meets the criteria for fair use -- does not interfere with the photographer's right to make a profit, because, when an image meets the criteria for fair use, the photographer has been stripped of the right to make a profit.

<div class="ivmbox " style="margin-bottom: 1em; border: 1px solid #AAA; background-color: ivory; padding: 0.5em; display: flex; align-items: center; ">
I have explained this point to Stefan2 before, and, as in this discussion, he argues from the fallacy that we have to prevent the possibility that our readers will re-use the image in a way that doesn't meet the fair use criteria.

Note his point 2 -- here Stefan2 is essentially stating that we are responsible if our readers re-use an image we used, but do so inappropriately. We all recognize we have no such obligation when we use CC images, and Stefan2 has made no effort to show we have this obligation when we use an image that meets the criteria for fair use.

We are all fallible. I too am fallible. There may be a passage in a wikidocument that explicitly imposes the obligation Stefan2 keeps implying we are under. But, if so, he has never been able -- or willing -- to cite that passage. You closed this discussion, without explanation. If I take this as your endorsement of his reasoning, then I would like to ask you if you can cite a passage from a wikidocument that says we are responsible when one of readers makes a further re-use of an image we used appropriately, but they did not.

However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. ==Request for deleted pages to be sent to e-mail address==
To Whom It May Concern:

Many of my personal talk pages were deleted earlier today, and it was noted that Misplaced Pages is not a place for fictional content to be uploaded. However, I also received a notice that pages deleted under this policy can be sent to the personal e-mail address associated with my account. I was wondering if I could be sent the last versions of all the talk pages deleted from my account; from there, I would transfer the content offsite, to Wikia.com. If this is possible, it would be greatly appreciated.

December's Fall

Hi - I noticed the blanking of the recently created page, December's Fall, which you reverted a few moments before I was about to. However, I then spotted that the editor who blanked it was also the article's creator, and who had just had the page turned down under WP:AFC by @SwisterTwister:. Regards. Nick Moyes (talk) 19:45, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

Patrolling recent changes

Being a newer editor, I only just heard about the ability to patrol recent changes, and thought I'd give it a try. But— dang it— you're too fast! That's a good thing, of course. I'm glad we've got editors like you around. Liam Gibson (talk) 16:59, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Response to one of "my" edits

Hello, you sent me a message recently about one of my edits that I made, and it seems like I had "edited" a page on the Origins of Albanians. However, I do not remember ever making an edit, nor have I made an edit ever (as far as I know). Maybe you can shed some light on the situation? 19:25, 23 May 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.106.209.238 (talk)

ArbCom 2019 special circular

Icon of a white exclamation mark within a black triangle
Administrators must secure their accounts

The Arbitration Committee may require a new RfA if your account is compromised.

View additional information

Why have I received this message?
All administrators are receiving it.
What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
You can find out more about 2FA at m:2FA.

This message was sent to all administrators following a recent motion. Thank you for your attention. For the Arbitration Committee, Cameron11598 02:35, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Deletion of StarCraft unit articles

In the distant, distant past you closed this AFD, Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion/Zergling, as "delete with the possibility of transwiki", which I fully agree with. However, it seems like this large list of articles was never properly deleted and they now all redirect to Races of StarCraft, which of course does not even mention these non-notable units. And furthermore, some of them have been added to disambiguation pages specifically because the redirects still exist. Do you have any suggestion for how to go about getting them actually deleted? -- Fyrael (talk) 16:24, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:06, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
