Fifteen years passed, Mara grew into an intelligent, beautiful, kind, and down-to-earth person (despite being poor), Gary and Lupe blame her. Lupe blames her because she thought since she was born, bad luck came to them but Karlo and Susan were very kind to her. While in the other side, Clara was rich and intelligent. But she grew spoiled due to the lack of time her parents spent with her since they were always so busy. Mara had a chance to enter the same private school Clara was attending as well. She became a scholar at that school. When the school started, Mara and Clara became enemies because Clara thought Mara was stealing her spotlight in the class as the smartest girl. Unknown to Mara, Clara was the most popular in the campus. When a school competition was held, Mara and Clara won. This caused their firm friendship but their friends disapprove of their friendship. Desiree (Clara's friend) tells her that Mara only uses her to take her spotlight, which is not true. When an election for being president was held, Mara and Clara were candidates. Mara won and this caused again Clara to become angry with her. On the other side, Gary worked in a syndicate which whose leader is Lover Boy and his fiancée, Nenita. Gary worked there because he will receive a big salary, Karlo knew about this and reported to the police, it was later revealed that Karlo had reported them as Lover Boy's personnel told and Gary was also caught talking to Karlo so Lover Boy's gang went after them both. During the chase, Karlo got run over by a random car, and this caused his hospitalization. Mara visited him and Karlo tried to tell her the truth but he was starting having attacks, which cause his death, once again, Gary blames her for Karlo's death, to take justice to his death, Gary also reported the gang and tell the police where the gang's hiding exactly which cause Lover Boy's death and his personnel were left in the hand of Nenita. And then, after few days, Mara was battered by Gary because he saw her and Christian together during Amante's party as Clara reported. Also Christian had given her a ]. This event was caused by Clara's jealousy. Mara and Susan needed to live far away from Gary, so they lived only temporarily at the Del Valle's. This made Clara even angrier with Mara, so she made Mara her servant. Once, there was a father-daughter camping trip held by the school. Amante and Clara were supposed to join but Amante also included Mara, and this made Clara angry again. During camp, surprisingly, Gary came, to also camp with Mara. During a game, Amante had to find sticks and Clara was left behind. A snake falls on her, so she started shouting. On the other side, Gary and Mara lost their map and compass so when Gary heard Clara shouting, he rushed to her and left Mara. She didn't know the way back, so she got lost as well. During a rainfall that night, they Gary and Amante went looking for the girls. Clara went to them and she saw Mara, near the end of a cliff and just holding on a branch of a tree but she didn't help her. After that, she went away and Amante saw her. And then, when they were about to go home, Mara saw Clara's raincoat and it looked exactly like the one she saw when she was about to fall. She got angry with Clara. On the other side, Lupe wouldn't stop gambling so her cancer of the heart worsened, so she was asked to take more rest. At the Del Valle's, Gary wouldn't stop harassing Clara, telling she is the real David and not the real del Valle, so she took a DNA test with Erris (Christian's friend). The result was, her blood didn't match with Alvira and Amante's but she kept on hiding the truth even though Erris forces her to say the truth, and then, she lied to Gary that the result is that she's the real del Valle. On the other side, Karlo visits Lupe through her dreams because he wanted to correct Mara's misfortune, and then one day, she read Karlo's diary and knew the truth. So she went to school where Mara and Clara studies, to see her real granddaughter (Clara) cause in an accident. Clara lost plenty of blood here but when Alvira and Amante's blood didn't match so Gary came to donate, the accident cause Mara to be sent to jail by Alvira. And then, Amante saw Clara talking to Erris about a DNA so he went to her room to look for it and he saw it under her bed and he told Alvira the truth and Susan also reads Karlo's ].

However she was forced to leave when Gary arrived and pulled her away leaving Mara still attached to the bomb. So everybody mourned Mara's death but the truth is, Mara was alive through Lenita (Gary's right hand) who she saved because she didn't want to kill her. She freed Mara but she slipped while she was walking and she ran fast, but the bomb exploded and caused Lenita's death. Everybody thought the body they found was Mara's but it was actually Lenita's. But the truth is, she called Christian before she collapsed in the way so Christian brought her to Nanding and Barang (his dad's friend). Because his parents divorced, he was not allowed to go there, but secretly, he went on a vacation.

====Chapter 3==== ===Antagonist===
*] as Clara C. Del Valle ''(de facto)'' / Clara E. David ''(de jure)'' – She is the beautiful and intelligent, but bratty daughter of Amanthe and Alvira Del Valle, a wealthy couple. Her biological parents are Gary and Susan and her friends resent Mara for her social status. She is head-over-heels in love with her childhood best friend Christian.
One day, Barang heard Christian call the girl they adopted "Mara," revealing her true identity and situation. Upset, Barang forgave them but because of Mara's persistence to see her family, Christian and Mara went back to Manila. Christian offered for Mara to hide in the master bedroom of his home for the time being until he found a safer place. In her drunken stupor, Vanessa saw Mara but thought "Mara" was a spirit visiting her. She told Clara about Mara's appearance to her who then told Alvira. Alvira wondered why Mara visited Vanessa and not her. Clara investigated by visiting him while Christian moved Mara to an apartment, connected to the back of the owner's house, and paid the rent. One day, while Alvira was driving with Clara and Clara was talking to Alvira, she accidentally runs into a pineapple vendor. She was brought to the police station for an investigation and paid for the damages. They saw Lenita's mother, who held a photograph of Lenita and was distressed about her month-long disappearance. As Alvira and Clara looked on, Clara recognized Lenita as one of the kidnappers. With Lenita gone missing for the same length of time that Mara had "died", Amante and Alvira doubted that Mara was the one who had indeed died in the explosion. Alvira recalled a moment when one of the nurses handed Mara's necklace; the situation did not feel right. They realized that the "Mara" in the hospital was not biologically identified; that everyone had assumed it was Mara without question. Amante and Alvira recovered "Mara's" body from the cemetery to test for DNA. The results revealed that Lenita died in the explosion. Alvira, Amante and Susan are happy and given hope that Mara is alive. Meanwhile, Christian updated Mara on what her families know: she's alive. Regardless, Mara visited Lupe to take care of her at times when Clara abandoned her. One day, Clara visited Christian and while Vanessa made snacks for them and Christian left to hide Mara, Clara secretly looked into Christian's camera and concluded that he was with Mara this whole time. Clara was overcome with jealousy. Amante continued his search for Mara with a ten-million peso reward, broadcasting it live on the media while Gary slowly got rid of the involved in the kidnapping. Gary tipped the police of where his men are meeting; all of the men are gunned down except for one. Amante visited the surviving kidnapper and asked him for the truth, who said he would in exchange for the reward money. Amante left to decide while the kidnapper informed Gary of Amante's move: if Gary did not pay the five million pesos soon to his family like they had agreed, he would tell Amante everything. But Gary outsmarted Amante as he sent a personnel, disguised as the kidnapper's wife's friend, to poison him so he couldn't talk. Meanwhile, Christina suffered under Gary's manipulation: the kidnapper dropped her name as the mastermind (as Gary ordered) and she was forced to rely on Gary for safety. Gary told her of his money problems and allowed him to take her money and jewelry hidden in her bedroom, which almost got him caught by the police. After days of hiding out, Christina called Amante to tell that she was not the one who planned the kidnapping and wanted to see him to tell him everything. She texted him the location and time to meet. Christina sensed that Gary was using her and would soon get rid of her. While Christina went to another room, Gary scrolled through her phone and found the text messages. Gary went to the meeting place and killed Christina just minutes before Amante arrived. Gary had called the police ahead of time. When they had arrived on the top of the building, they found Christina, dead and in Amante's arms. Amante was automatically the suspect and Gary thought he had succeeded.

Mara Clara was a remake of the 1992 television series, Mara Clara an adapted novel and serial of Emil Cruz Jr. produced by ABS-CBN Studios. In 1996, the original TV series was adapted into a film which nearly the whole cast reprised their roles.
