==Cast and characters==
===Regular=== | |||
* ] as Jacqueline "Jackie" Goodman: Wife of Martin and mother of Adam and Jonathan. A grown up woman with a teenage sense of humour. Funny, fiery and occasionally a bit saucy. Jackie is usually unimpressed by her ] and ] antics.
==Premise== | |||
* ] as Martin Goodman: Father of Adam and Jonathan, Martin is fond of going shirtless inside and out - he explains that he is "boiling" - and seems to have both a severe hearing problem and trouble paying attention. Also appears to be deeply concerned with Adam's obtaining of a "female". Calls Adam and Jonny "bambinos", English colloquialism for "bambino/bambini" (baby) in Italian. He is a very keen science lover, and in many ways is socially inept. He also has a few rather odd habits, including eating out of the bin and generally collecting food scraps any way possible. His filthiness forms a main part of his character.
''Friday Night Dinner'' depicts ] in the ] ] Goodman family, reflecting series creator Popper's own secular Jewish upbringing.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2011/mar/03/tamsin-greig-interview|title=Tamsin Greig: 'I always think I'll never work again'|first=Emine|last=Saner|work=The Guardian|date=4 March 2011|access-date=11 December 2016|archive-date=28 January 2023|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230128174918/https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2011/mar/03/tamsin-greig-interview|url-status=live}}</ref> It is set and filmed in suburban ],<ref>{{Cite web|date=19 June 2021|title=Friday Night Dinner. The family consists of mother Jackie, father Martin, elder son Adam, and younger son Jonny. The episodes follow the family as the sons arrive at the family home and proceed to their dinner, which is often interrupted by numerous things. Although some episodes are centred around Jackie's eccentricities, she is usually the ] who tries to run a normal household but is disrupted by the rest of the family. Dinner is usually disrupted by Adam and Jonny pranking each other (for example, putting salt in each other's drinking glasses) or Martin's strange habits, such as walking around the house shirtless or eating out-of-date food.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://collider.com/underrated-british-shows/|title=Top 10 Underrated British Shows You May Not Have Heard Of|work=Collider|date=26 May 2022|accessdate=27 May 2022|archive-date=26 May 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220526210637/https://collider.com/underrated-british-shows/|url-status=live}}</ref> When something goes wrong, Martin is often heard shouting his ] "shit on it".<ref>{{cite magazine|url=https://www.nme.com/features/paul-ritter-funniest-moments-friday-night-dinner-2914961|title="Shit on it!": Paul Ritter's funniest moments on 'Friday Night Dinner'|first=Nick|last=Levine|magazine=NME|date=6 April 2021|accessdate=27 May 2022|archive-date=27 May 2022|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220527185650/https://www.nme.com/features/paul-ritter-funniest-moments-friday-night-dinner-2914961|url-status=live}}</ref> They are frequently interrupted by their strange but good-hearted neighbour Jim Bell, who is attracted to Jackie and visits them due to his loneliness; he is usually accompanied by his dog, Wilson, of whom he is afraid. After Wilson's death, Jim adopts a new dog, whom he names Milson.
* ] as Adam Goodman: Adam is the elder son. He is in his mid 20s and is trying to forge a career as a musician. Adam is nicknamed "Pusface" by Jonny and sometimes by Jackie. He is quite often the victim of mishap, and mostly the centrepiece around which the chaos moves.
Jackie's ] best friend Valerie Lewis, known as "Auntie Val" to Adam and Jonny, is a frequent visitor; Jackie's mother Nellie "Grandma" Buller also visits. Occasional guest appearances were made by Martin's mother Cynthia Goodman, nicknamed "Horrible Grandma" by the boys due to her cruel and condescending treatment of the family. Other guest appearances featured Nellie's suitor Mr. Morris, who appeared in three episodes while Val's husband Larry briefly appears in two episodes.
* ] as Jonathan "Jonny" Goodman: Jonny is an ] for "Garvins", and the younger son. He's always trying to start fights with Adam and play practical jokes on him, causing Adam to retaliate. Adam nicknames Jonny "Pissface".
There are elements of farce throughout.

As well as this he seems to be quite socially incapable and constantly leaves gaps in conversation where nothing is said. This is added to by a seeming total ignorance of normal social rules, particularly when attempting to flirt with Jackie. Despite being billed as a guest star, he is featured in every episode. Jim is widely considered to be the ] of the show.

|ShortSummary=When Jonny finds Adam's old diary, he learns a terrible secret: when Adam was 11, he secretly dumped Jonny's beloved 'Pandy' panda bear toy in the outside bin, never to be seen again. This unleashes a war in the house, with Jonny threatening to destroy Adam's equally beloved old rabbit toy, 'Buggy'. Fights rage in every room, with Mum and Dad unable to control their two twenty-something sons, who have become 13 again. Desperate to hide his precious comfort toy from his angry brother, Adam gives Buggy to just about the worst person possible: neighbour Jim. |ShortSummary=The boys are excited, because grandma is coming for dinner, and tonight she's bringing her new boyfriend. 'He's not her boyfriend,' says mum, he's her 'male companion'. 82 year-old Lou Morris is a horrible, vain man, who sports a trilby, a ], and is obsessed with cleanliness - wiping his hands on the bathroom curtains when there's no hand towel. Mr Morris is also the world's worst driver, parking his battered old car right up to the front doorstep, smashing his headlamp. None of the family can see what lovely grandma sees in him. Dad can't stand the man and hides in his shed (while rifling through his box of fossils, saying that he's 'looking for ]'). |ShortSummary=To get out of cleaning the loft with Dad and Adam, Jonny claims to have dislocated his shoulder. But when Adam discovers he's lying, he threatens to tell mum immediately. "Fine," says Jonny, '"Then I'll just tell her all the grotty details of what you got up to with Hayley Posner". Adam is horrified. Hayley was Adam's blind date - the niece of his Mum's best friend Val - and he slept with her and then never called back, "because she smelt like Mum". Mum mustn't find this out, so Adam has to let Jonny get away with his pretend bad shoulder. Meanwhile Mum and Dad are not on speaking terms. There's been a terrible argument. Dad tells the boys that the reason - much to their horror - is 'sexual'. But what exactly he got up to, no one will tell them. Val (Tracy Ann-Oberman), comes round for dinner to lend mum moral support, as mum's argument with Dad escalates.What is mum and dad's terrible secret? And will mum and dad find out all about Jonny and Adam's secrets too? All this, and a visit to the unfriendliest pub in the world - The Black Boy. | |||

Mum is not happy, and an awkward scene arises when the family bump into Liz outside Jonny's office. Meanwhile mum has put dad on a diet - 'no chocolate, no cheese, no cakes' for two weeks, but dad has made the boys smuggle in food for him, which he keeps hidden in the downstairs loo. Jim pops round with his dog Wilson. He's drunk, as he's celebrating Wilson's birthday. ('Wilson is either 4 or 9'). Jim has even made Wilson a birthday cake. Grandma offers Jonny some advice - 'Take her out dancing' - before showing him how to dance in the kitchen. While they dance to the music on the radio, it transpires that it's just the music for the news headlines, and before long, Jonny and Grandma are actually dancing to the news. Adam is loving it. This is Jim's happiest moment ever - finally, his first ever Friday night dinner with the Goodmans. Dad and the boys are livid with mum for asking him round. Friday Night Dinner is a British sitcom created by Robert Popper that aired on Channel 4 from 25 February 2011 to 1 May 2020. Starring Tamsin Greig, Paul Ritter, Simon Bird, Tom Rosenthal, and Mark Heap, it follows the regular Friday night dinner experience of the Jewish middle-class Goodman family in North London. Following the conclusion of the sixth series and Ritter's death in 2021, it was announced that the show would not return. The show is filmed using a single-camera setup.
The show received two BAFTA nominations in 2012. The first series was nominated for Best Situation Comedy, while Greig was nominated for Best Female Comedy Performance. In 2021, for his performance in the final series of the show, Ritter received a posthumous BAFTA nomination for Best Male Comedy Performance.
Premise
Friday Night Dinner depicts Shabbat dinner in the middle-class secular Jewish Goodman family, reflecting series creator Popper's own secular Jewish upbringing. It is set and filmed in suburban North London, with filming taking place in Mill Hill.
The family consists of mother Jackie, father Martin, elder son Adam, and younger son Jonny. The episodes follow the family as the sons arrive at the family home and proceed to their dinner, which is often interrupted by numerous things. Although some episodes are centred around Jackie's eccentricities, she is usually the straight character who tries to run a normal household but is disrupted by the rest of the family. Dinner is usually disrupted by Adam and Jonny pranking each other (for example, putting salt in each other's drinking glasses) or Martin's strange habits, such as walking around the house shirtless or eating out-of-date food. When something goes wrong, Martin is often heard shouting his catchphrase "shit on it". They are frequently interrupted by their strange but good-hearted neighbour Jim Bell, who is attracted to Jackie and visits them due to his loneliness; he is usually accompanied by his dog, Wilson, of whom he is afraid. After Wilson's death, Jim adopts a new dog, whom he names Milson.
Jackie's neurotic best friend Valerie Lewis, known as "Auntie Val" to Adam and Jonny, is a frequent visitor; Jackie's mother Nellie "Grandma" Buller also visits.
There are elements of farce throughout.
