=== Doing === | |||
I notice your interest in child protection and would be interested to hear your thoughts on an issue that I came across recently. I was involved in mediation of a dispute on the ] page. Note that this mediation ended some time ago. During the mediation, the mediator at one time suggested that he wanted to start private mediation with individual editors and wanted to contact me off-wiki by phone, IRC, or Skype to help with the mediation process. I declined to accept this although I was put under some pressure by the mediator and other editors to do so. My reasons for doing this are given in full here ] and discussed at some length later on in that page.
* TBD | |||
One of my reasons for not complying was child protection. For the most part, Misplaced Pages is a relatively safe place for the vulnerable but you can see clear child protection issues arising when editors can be put under pressure to speak privately to another person. I was staggered by the mediation committee's lack of understanding of this subject.
=== To do === | |||
In the end I changed the mediation policy to state that private mediation can be declined without giving a reason. There was some resistance to this to start with but my latest additions are still in place. Whether this is because they have become accepted as a consensus view or because no one notices or cares I do not know.

:: Hi Martin. My personal opinion on this is that no editor should be ''forced'' into off-wiki mediation for any reason. It's a breach of privacy and is worrying, especially in the case where minors are involved. Children should, IMO, be actively discouraged from contact with adults by phone, etc. It's a disaster waiting to happen and impacts their privacy and safety. :* If you want me to unprot my talk page, or any other for that matter, ''just ask''. Don't go to ] to . As others have pointed out, one glance at for my talk page will explain everything. About 1% of all anon edits here are constructive, the rest are stuff like or ''"I am going to rape your children and mutilate their dead bodies"'' - stuff like that. It goes with the oversight/checkuser territory, and largely washes over me; the main issue being the timewasting on everyone else's part that goes with things like this. I'll unprot it now, '''''just for you''''' :) - see how things go.
:* You make very good points indeed about {{tl|checkuserblock}} and, fortunately, they weren't lost amongst the vitriol. I see that FT2, Roger and others have made great improvements to the template, so that's good progress :) tho' I see you're still
:* Surprisingly - and this comment is for ] too - that particular /16 segment of Hutchinson 3G Network (H3GUK Subscribe Block3) is surprisingly quiet apart from - ''*coff*'' - a small few constructive editors (the useragents on CU make that very clear), some registered editors, and bored teenagers like and that Mickey Darwin guy. And again, as a CU and admin, one has to weigh up the access of unregistered editors versus the torrent of timewasting socking, vandalism and other shite that emanates from that netblock. My personal feelings on anon editors '''never''' reflects on my blocking actions here; rules are rules and I resent your (DuncanHill's) that I did this out of some sort of personal bias. That is not the case at all and indeed, I welcome any other checkuser to review this rangeblock and act accordingly. No agendas here. BTW - the Hutchinson 3G Network spans quite a number of other ranges; it's one subsection of the overall 3G network. You can get more info , for example.
:* A one-week softblock is not ''"ostensibly indefinite"'', no matter what way you slice or dice it. This range has and will likely be again, unfortunately.
:* Next time you mention someone on ] or ], the polite and proper thing to do is '''let them know''' with something like {{tl|ANI-notice}}. In fact, the edit notice ]. Just sayin', since we're talking rules ...
:* To ]: yeah, the BruceJenner thing seems really unfair compared to this. However, without going into ], that guy is all over the place and it's particularly hard to nail down his IP ranges without causing a ''lot'' of problems for a lot of people. And, as you say, things are only going to get worse as people migrate to mobile networks which have by definition, short DHCP leases. And I really don't know what the answer to this one is. That other vandal - the Colonel Saunders guy - uses Blackberry ranges exclusively to create accounts to circumvent softblocks, for example. My personal experience of complaining to ISPs is that it's a waste of time and energy & most of them couldn't care less.

Not sure if you even remember it occurring, but I thought you might be interested in hearing an update all these years later because it was so bizarre.
Anyway, just for context, I was just short of 13 years old when that happened. Age-wise, I could see my parents maybe having some sort of filter on my computer, I'm pretty sure it was not some sort of computer virus. I never specifically asked them about it, my mom could get kind of reactive about things so I didn't want her assuming I was doing something inappropriate. The only thing I can think of on why it never recurred again is that they took internet away from that computer (for reasons that stretch outside of this conversation, nothing terrible though, mainly staying up too late and being lethargic at school) and they maybe never thought to do that again.

- Hey there, @Thebirdlover:. Yeah, it's been nearly 15 years since that incident. I can tell you what happened. Back then, I was an Oversighter, and had responsibilities for personally-identifying information and for children's privacy. Back then, you were a minor, and I was alerted to remove certain information from your user page for your own safety. It's usually done very discretely and even administrators can't see the edits. So that's what happened.
- The issue with User:Jolly Janner was unrelated to yours but involved Doxxing, so I had to dive in there and do some redaction - Alison 22:22, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- I know what the oversight issue was about (that was going back to when I started here), I was talking about this situation that you were involved in related to my computer haphazardly removing expletives because I was reminded of it and felt like trying to explain what was going on as best as I possibly could (even though I still don't completely know what happened). --Thebirdlover (talk) 02:15, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I had no idea what happened there, and still don't. It looks like there was some weird censorware on your computer, as it wasn't retroactively censored on the WP side, from what I can see - Alison 19:30, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

Thank you today for pointing at him! - I have Michael Ruetz on the same page (see story), and music to express happiness and sadness. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:54, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for adding Michael Ruetz, and condolences on his loss, too - Alison 22:24, 10 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! I didn't know him but was fascinated by his photo series. The loss of a friend was in real life. Today, you can listen to the (new) Perplexities after Escher --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:19, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
- Listen today to Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata, on his birthday - it was a hook in the 2020 DYK set when his 250th birthday was remembered. I picked a recording with Antônio Meneses, because he was on my sad list this year, and I was in Brazil (see places), and I love his playing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:01, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! I'm in work right now, and cued it up to listen to in my office. Last week was very much a Bach week as the Netherlands Bach Society just livestreamed Bach's Christmas oratorio - have a listen - Alison 19:28, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! A pic of our last performance is in the article ;) - I came to fix the cellist's name, with a 10-years-old DYK and new pics - look for red birds --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:37, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- Today is a woman poet's centenary. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:01, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

CheckUser / IP Block exemption
Hello! Just got a notification that my IP block exemption is about to expire, and would love to have it renewed. Hope it's ok to contact you as a CheckUser directly on your discussion page, and that I haven't misinterpreted the guidelines on WP:IPBLOCK. Many thanks in advance! Listz3 (talk) 22:13, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there. A quick check and everything looks fine to me. Can you ask @GeneralNotability: as I've no access to the ticketing system? - Alison 19:25, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- GeneralNotability has been inactive for several months. However, it just happens that I have all the needed accesses, and have extended your IP block exemption by one year, Listz3. Hope you don't mind my jumping in, Alison! Risker (talk) 02:43, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oh - thanks, Risker! Problem solved :) - Alison 03:31, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
