I know nothing about Misplaced Pages and how to format properly; however, I was just stopping by to say hello. My name is Josh and I'm 24 years old, from Cleveland, Ohio.

I am just stopping by because I learned you have been editing Misplaced Pages for over 10 years, and I want to commend you for that.

I've seen the ignorant-assed people here so this is not an easy job I'm sure.

At any rate, take care, hope to hear back from you. :)

Hi Alison,
I have a question about if it's possible to get some help finding out the IP-address of a specific user name?
I am quite new here and I have built a new article (Anders Grahn). And the thing is that one person has tried to destroy it for about 6 times already. The user is putting ”fun names” and stories in the text. Nothing violent though, just some kind of "vandalism".
So, is it possible to find out who that person is? Or should I just continue to clean up the article?

Do you have any tips how to make things like this stop?

Thanks and regards,

:::The source used the term, and not to "describe the ridiculous coverage". You are projecting an intent that is simply not there in the source. == A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==

Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}.

A new user group, ], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at ]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available ] but very often a friendly custom message works best.

== ED ==

Upon doing some digging, I see that an exception was made in the past to wrap Encyclopedia Dramatica's url in nowiki tags for the purpose of its article. Fair enough. However, do we have any reliable sources about the authority of the url we're pointing people to? It would not be the first time some random person hosted a mirror of this sort of content just to exploit the incoming traffic. This comes up all the time with Tor .onion links, which have no central registration authority and so very frequently subject to a copy of a site going up at a different address, with different intentions... Seems to me reliable sources are in order to provide any "unofficial" url, no? &mdash; <tt>] ]</tt> \\ 12:30, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
* Hi there. Given that it's ] we're talking about, you're not going to find much in terms of a ] which will authenticate the .rs TLD switch. I happen to know that it's the same crew that ran the .se site, but that's obviously a primary source. My recommend would be to leave it as-is for now - ] ] 18:25, 27 March 2017 (UTC)
**We had the Daily Dot for the previous one, I believe, but I don't think "there are no reliable sources for it because of the nature of the subject" is a good reason to include something without reliable sources. The opposite, really (regardless of its content). Linking to unsourced unofficial domains hosting mirrors of a site run, presumably, by just some user/fan of the site, especially when that site is associated with trolling, harassment, doxing, etc.... seems seriously problematic for ]. &mdash; <tt>] ]</tt> \\ 23:59, 28 March 2017 (UTC)
*** Hi there. I didn't actually say that there are no reliable sources. What I did say was that "you're not going to find much" in terms of a ]. And we've been over this ground again and again over the past 5 or 6 years, starting in 2010 when the .com domain was taken down by Girlvinyl, and subsequently popped up again at .ru and .es, finally settling down for the longest time at .se. Each time, it's basically the same crew running the show. In fact, I know a number of them, given that I'm an ex-sysop there. Not that that helps, as it's a primary source. My point here is that yes, it's the same site, as time will prove out. But in the meantime, there will be the same back-and-forth over the links. Because - let's be honest - many folks would rather there was no link at all there due to ED being taboo on Misplaced Pages. WP:*IS*CENSORED, if you like. During this project, Move has provided feedback to ensure accuracy. I noticed the Zillow article has been tagged for conflict of interest editing, but I'm working transparently and have added appropriate COI banners to both talk pages. Do you have any interest in reviewing either draft, or know someone who may be? I've posted some notes on WikiProject talk pages but so far no changes have been made to either article. : <code><nowiki>- ] ]</nowiki></code> : - ] ]

I know this is from over a decade ago, but I was looking at my contribution history and it made me think of the time when my browser was inexplicably censoring everything on your page and the page of ] and you ended up having to be in the middle of it. Not sure if you even remember it occurring, but I thought you might be interested in hearing an update all these years later because it was so bizarre.
—] (]) 08:20, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Anyway, just for context, I was just short of 13 years old when that happened. Age-wise, I could see my parents maybe having some sort of filter on my computer, I'm pretty sure it was not some sort of computer virus. I never specifically asked them about it, my mom could get kind of reactive about things so I didn't want her assuming I was doing something inappropriate. The only thing I can think of on why it never recurred again is that they took internet away from that computer (for reasons that stretch outside of this conversation, nothing terrible though, mainly staying up too late and being lethargic at school) and they maybe never thought to do that again.

== Taleb reverts ==

I am very disappointed to see you edit war without responding to my clearly stated objections to the content as you insist on reinstating it in the article. It's undue because (as noted, explained, etc.) the two authors are not knowledgeable experts who have the understanding to evaluate whether Taleb "predicted" such events. The meaning of "predicted" is not defined either in the article or in the sources -- and although you may not be familiar with the issues that "prediction" entails in this context, I assure you they are numerous and complex. Finally "he is credited with..." in Misplaced Pages's voice, without telling our readers the authors are an op-ed political pundit and a British fiction writer who dabbles in newspaper work '''is indeed''' ] -- and rather egregiously so.

I'm at a loss to understand why you would edit-war this stuff with a derisive/dismissive edit summary rather than engaging on talk to establish your reasons and also to help focus this article on a better-sourced and more encyclopedic treatment of Taleb's work. And among other things, it sets the example (with your snarky edit summary,

== Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) ==

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." We have ] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, ] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -] 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)</small>

hello my name is mark. i have been editing wiki for a long time (years). i apologize for bothering you. But I think I need help. My account has been flagged for some kind of violation callef a “Sock puppet“. I am a 50-year-old not particularly coumpter savvy guy. I love editing Misplaced Pages and it gives me a great sence of perpose.  Again I apologize, I’m crying while trying to type this in with my stylus. i dont know why someone would want to prank me. but i use just one account and do not understand what is going on. Im afraid my reputation on Wiki has been destroyed. i am disabled with only partial use my fingers and hands so it is hard for me to type. I am afraid that I’m not going to be able to edit on wiki anymore. Please help me.--] (]) 20:48, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:05, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:User en-IE

A tag has been placed on Category:User en-IE indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz 06:40, 24 November 2024 (UTC)

Weird Censoring Issue from 2011

I know this is from over a decade ago, but I was looking at my contribution history and it made me think of the time when my browser was inexplicably censoring everything on your page and the page of User:Jolly Janner and you ended up having to be in the middle of it. Not sure if you even remember it occurring, but I thought you might be interested in hearing an update all these years later because it was so bizarre.

It definitely was not malicious on my part, I was as confounded about it as anyone else, plus I curse like a sailor in certain environments so I am not against profanity as a rule. --Thebirdlover (talk) 05:24, 7 December 2024 (UTC)

  • Hey there, @Thebirdlover:. Yeah, it's been nearly 15 years since that incident. I can tell you what happened. Back then, I was an Oversighter, and had responsibilities for personally-identifying information and for children's privacy. Back then, you were a minor, and I was alerted to remove certain information from your user page for your own safety. It's usually done very discretely and even administrators can't see the edits. So that's what happened.
    • I know what the oversight issue was about (that was going back to when I started here), I was talking about this situation that you were involved in related to my computer haphazardly removing expletives because I was reminded of it and felt like trying to explain what was going on as best as I possibly could (even though I still don't completely know what happened). --Thebirdlover (talk) 02:15, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
      • Yeah, I had no idea what happened there, and still don't. It looks like there was some weird censorware on your computer, as it wasn't retroactively censored on the WP side, from what I can see - Alison 19:30, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
