Cullen and Dykman LLP is a full-service law firm based in the United States, with headquarters in Garden City, New York. Established in 1850, it is one of the oldest continuously operating law firms in the country. The firm provides legal services to clients in industries including financial services, energy, real estate, construction, and education.
History
Early Founding
Alexander McCue, a founding partner, started practice in 1850, and later became a Judge. Twenty years later, he joined two other Brooklyn lawyers to form the firm of McCue, Hall and Cullen, which eventually later became Cullen and Dykman. One of those partners, the Honorable Edgar M. Cullen, became the Chief Judge of the State.
McCue was one of the incorporators of New York and Brooklyn Bridge Co., which was organized for the purpose of building a bridge between Brooklyn and New York. Edgar M. Cullen and later James G. Bergen and William N. Dykman were counsel.
The name William N. Dykman appeared on the letterhead of McCue, Hall and Cullen as an associate.
Cullen became a New York Supreme Court Justice in 1880, but eventually, retired as Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals in 1914 and returned to the firm, which changed its name to Cullen and Dykman. After 1915, the number of partners grew significantly, but the firm's name remained the same.
Today
In 2003, the firm merged with Bleakley Platt Remsen Millham & Curran. The firm currently operates across New York, New Jersey and Washington D.C, with practice areas in Banking and financial services; energy and utilities; real estate and land use; commercial litigation; construction litigation; corporate law; labor and employment law; education law; trusts and estates and energy law.
