New Year's Revolution 2007 was the third and final annual New Year's Revolution pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on January 7 2007 at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri and was the final RAW brand exclusive PPV. The tagline was "The Revolution Continues...".
The main event was for the WWE Championship between John Cena and Umaga, which Cena won with a roll-up. The main matches on the undercard were Rated-RKO (Edge and Randy Orton) versus D-Generation X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) for the World Tag Team Championship and Jeff Hardy versus Johnny Nitro in a Steel cage match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
Report
Background
The November 6 2006 edition of Raw began with Kevin Federline, who after interfering in John Cena's match the night before at Cyber Sunday, came out to the ring to challenge Cena one-on-one at Raw's first broadcast of the year on January 1. The WWE Champion was not in the arena due to Eric Bischoff giving him the day off; yet later that night, Cena interfered during Maria's match with Umaga, coming to Maria's defense. Cena stormed to the ring and attacked Umaga, took the microphone, and accepted Kevin Federline's challenge. The next week, Jonathan Coachman booked a match between John Cena and Umaga, which ended in a no contest when the ECW Champion The Big Show, who would team up with Umaga against Cena at Survivor Series, interfered. And at Survivor Series, John Cena and Bobby Lashley won the match for their team. On the first broadcast of Raw after Survivor Series, Armando Estrada came to the ring with Umaga and officially announced that Umaga was challenging John Cena for the WWE Championship. Cena then came to the ring and accepted the challenge and said he'll face him at that same moment, but Estrada told Cena that the match will happen when they say so. The next week, after defending his WWE Championship in a Masterlock Challenge, John Cena was assaulted by Umaga, and were both confronted by security. This led to Jonathan Coachman coming out and announcing that neither of them could touch each other outside of a match until their newly announced match at New Year's Revolution. The next week, John Cena defeated Armando Estrada after an FU. Yet after the match, Johnny Nitro, on behalf of Kevin Federline, came to the ring to assault Cena, which led to a match later on between them where Cena easily pinned Nitro. Also that night, Umaga sent Cena a message by defeating the Intercontinental Champion, Jeff Hardy, by KO. On the following Raw, John Cena yet again defended his WWE Championship against Edge. And later that night, Cena teamed up with D-Generation X against Umaga and Rated-RKO. The match ended in a draw when Rated-RKO and Umaga pummeled their opponents. On the January 1 2007 episode Raw, Kevin Federline and John Cena finally faced each other, yet under No Disqualifications. When Cena was going to perform the FU on Federline, Umaga made it to the ring and assaulted Cena with the WWE Championship; this allowed K-Fed to score the pinfall. This led to a 4-on-1 handicap match between Johnny Nitro, Jonathan Coachman, Umaga and Armando Estrada against Cena, where Cena was disqualified for attacking Umaga with a steel chair. Regardless of these two losses, at the end of the night, Cena stood tall.
Another feud leading up to the event was between Johnny Nitro and Jeff Hardy. This feud began on the September 4 2006 edition of Raw when Melina interfered in her boyfriend's, the Intercontinental Champion Johnny Nitro, match with Jeff Hardy, causing Nitro to be disqualified. Soon after, a rematch was made for Unforgiven, where, yet again, Melina interfered in the match. This time, however, her interference assisted Nitro for the win. On the October 2 edition of Raw, Jeff Hardy successfully pinned Nitro to win his second Intercontinental Championship. The fans were then allowed to vote for Jeff Hardy's opponent at Cyber Sunday, between Carlito, Shelton Benjamin and Nitro. Fans ultimately voted Carlito into the match, yet Hardy pinned him after a Swanton Bomb. The night after, however, General Manager for one night, Eric Bischoff scheduled a match between Jeff and Nitro, where Melina interfered and caused Nitro to get disqualified. Bischoff, however, made sure that Johnny Nitro reclaimed the Intercontinental Championship by immediately scheduling a rematch, yet under No Disqualifications. Nitro then won the match with Melina's assistance. The following week, however, Jeff Hardy reclaimed his Intercontinental Championship and won a rematch Ladder match the week after. On the November 27 2006 broadcast, Johnny Nitro and former tag team partner Joey Mercury, as MNM, accepted The Hardy Boyz's open challenge for December to Dismember, where The Hardys ultimately emerged victorious. At Armageddon, MNM and The Hardys competed with the teams of Dave Taylor and William Regal and Paul London and Brian Kendrick in a Fatal Four-Way Ladder match for Paul London and Brian Kendrick's WWE Tag Team Championship, which the champions retained. During this match, Joey Mercury was legitimately injured when he was struck in the face with a ladder, breaking his nose. As a result of the injury, Nitro challenged Jeff to a Steel Cage match at New Year's Revolution.
The rivalry between Mickie James and Victoria began when Victoria won a Divas Battle Royal to become the top contender to Mickie Jame's WWE Women's Championship. During the battle royal, Victoria legitimately injured RAW diva Candice Michelle, and for the following weeks, Victoria began defeating other face divas like Torrie Wilson and Maria. On the January 1 broadcast, Victoria was going to assault announcer Lillian Garcia, but Mickie James fought her off.
Carlito and Chris Masters's feud began on the November 27 edition of Raw when Carlito interfered in Master's match with Jerry "The King" Lawler to give The King the upset win. They began facing each other in tag team matches, mainly with Lawler and Viscera on each other's side. Their rivalry ascended a new level when Chris Masters applied the Masterlock on Torrie Wilson; which resulted in a match between Masters and Carlito, where Carlito assaulted Masters before the bell rang, and the match resulting in a No Contest. On January 1 2007, WWE.com announced that Carlito would face Chris Masters at New Year's Revolution.
The other two feuds were closely intertwined. On October 9, Edge and Randy Orton formed an alliance to take down D-Generation X. For consecutive weeks, Triple H and Randy Orton competed in singles matches, while Ric Flair had singles matches with members of the Spirit Squad. On the October 23 edition of Raw, Kenny Dykstra was angered by his teammates' recent losing streak against Ric Flair, and he proved himself by defeating Flair that night. Eventually, at Cyber Sunday, Rated-RKO (as Edge and Orton have now been referring to themselves) defeated D-Generation X with the assistance of Special Referee Eric Bischoff. Two weeks after defeating the Spirit Squad for the World Tag Team Championship, Ric Flair and Roddy Piper lost their championships to Rated-RKO. The reason being that Roddy Piper was diagnosed with cancer and had to immediately leave the show. Ric Flair, however, continued to feud with the Spirit Squad, defeating them at Survivor Series, with his team of Ron Simmons, Dusty Rhodes, and Sgt. Slaughter. On the November 27 edition of Raw, D-Generation X teamed up with Flair to take on the Spirit Squad in a 3-on-5 handicap match. DX and Flair defeated the Spirit Squad, packed them all in a crate (excluding Kenny) and kayfabe sent them to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). On the December 11 edition of Raw, Ric Flair assisted D-Generation X in an ambush by Rated-RKO and Kenny, and Jonathan Coachman came out to announce a Six-man tag match where D-Generation X and Flair again emerged victorious. On January 1, WWE's official website announced that Ric Flair would face Kenny Dykstra (as he's newly been referred as) and DX would face Rated-RKO for the World Tag Team Championships at New Year's Revolution.
Event
Before the event went live on pay per view, Vladimir Kozlov defeated Eugene in a very short dark match.
The first contest of the night was the steel cage match between Johnny Nitro and the Intercontinental Champion Jeff Hardy. The match included various high-glying maneuvers like top-rope dropkicks and sunset flips-turned-powerbombs off the top of the cage. Melina, also made her presence known during the contest, especially when she used her metal-studded belt to whack Hardy’s hands and keep him from climbing up top. The vicious assault allowed Nitro—who had been left hanging upside-down 15 feet in the air—to recover and almost climb out of the cage. Regardless, Jeff Hardy pulled Nitro from the top of the cage and nearly scored a pinfall after a Sawnton Bomb, yet Nitro's foot on the top rope stopped the referee's 3-count. Later in the match, Nitro made it over the cage, yet just as Nitro was about to jump, Jeff Hardy dropkicked the door open, and Nitro fell onto the top of the door, paining him between his legs. As Nitro was on top of the door, Jeff Hardy walked out the door to win the match and retain his Intercontinental Championship.
The next match was a surprise Tag Team Turmoil match for a future World Tag Team Championship title shot. The match started out with two tag teams and when a team was defeated, another came out until the match ended. The match begun with the teams of The World's Greatest Tag Team and The Highlanders. Approximately five minutes into the match, Shelton Benjamin pinned Robbie McAllister after a superplex. The self-proclaimed World's Greatest Tag Team survived yet another team, consisting of the legendary Jim Duggan and Super Crazy. The third team, however, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch defeated The World's Greatest Tag Team after Cade performed a diving elbow drop on Charlie Haas and scored the pinfall. The final team, Cryme Tyme, won the match after performing a G9 and pinning Lance Cade to become the top contenders to Rated-RKO's World Tag Team Championships.
After the match, Jonathan Coachman and Vince McMahon were backstage discussing the personal feud between Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell. McMahon announced a match between the two the next night on RAW. Kenny Dykstra made his way to the ring, mocking Ric Flair by wearing one of Flair's common robes. When the match begun, Kenny also mocked several of Flair’s in-ring mannerisms. When the referee was not paying attention, Dykstra delivered an illegal low blow and rolled Flair up with a small package to secure the pinfall.
Before the WWE Women's Championship match, there was a backstage segment with Victoria and Melina, where Victoria offered her the first shot at the Women's Championship if she helped her win it that night. When the match began, Melina apparently accepted Victoria's proposition when she came to the ring to get involved in the contest between the two divas. Her interference, however, was thwarted by Candice Michelle and Maria, who came to the ring to even the odds by attacking Melina. Minutes later, Mickie James performed a DDT on Victoria and pinned her to remain the WWE Women's Champion.
Next was the World Tag Team Championship match between the defending champions Rated-RKO and the challengers, D-Generation X. Close to 20 minutes into the match, Triple H received the tag from Shawn Michaels. He went on to hit Randy Orton with a spinebuster, thus injuring his own right leg. Despite the serious injury, Triple H continued to wrestle. DX used a barrage of Pedigrees, Steel Chairs, and Sweet Chin Music to incapacitate their opponents. This bloody match ended when Michaels hit the referee and then assaulted Rated-RKO with a chair. After the match, DX brutalized Rated-RKO and left them a bloody mess.
After this spectacle, Carlito and Chris Masters made their way to the ring for their match. The end of this relatively short match came when Carlito reversed the Master Lock attempt, Masters fell on Carlito and grabbed his tights to perform a rollup and successfully score the pinfall. After the match, Masters added insult to injury by locking on the Master Lock and causing further damage to the Caribbean Superstar.
The final match was the main event WWE Championship match. During the match, John Cena attempted and failed to nail the FU various times. Cena remained on his offensive and continued to be, as he tossed his foe’s hardened forehead into the steel ring post and followed up with a Five Knuckle Shuffle. When Cena yet again failed to execute the FU, Umaga seized control. Umaga charged at Cena, and the champion managed to raise his feet and connect and superkick Umaga, allowing Cena to quickly roll up Umaga for the pin. Cena had ended Umaga's undefeated streak and retained his WWE Championship.
Aftermath
On the night after John Cena ended Umaga's undefeated streak, Umaga brutally assaulted the WWE Champion after his match with The Great Khali and also interfered in Cena's match with Jonathan Coachman two weeks later. At the Royal Rumble, John Cena successfully retained his WWE Championship against the Samoan Bulldozer in a Last Man Standing match, seemingly ending their heated rivalry.
Jeff Hardy and Johnny Nitro continued to feud as members of the Hardys and MNM respectively, until their December to Dismember rematch at Royal Rumble, where the Hardys were victorious. The feud then began to fade, as Joey Mercury was released from his contract, and The Hardys began to establish their single careers, participating in the Money in the Bank ladder match. As a reward for defeating the Nature Boy, in a singles match at New Year's Revolution, Jonathan Coachman booked Kenny Dykstra in a match with Jeff Hardy for his Intercontinental Championship. Jeff Hardy successfully pinned Dykstra after a low-blow from Ric Flair on Dykstra. On the following Raw, Ric Flair finally defeated Dykstra in a New Year's Revolution rematch, ending their rivalry.
The feuds between Carlito and Chris Masters and Mickie James and Victoria also ended after Carlito and Mickie won subsequent rematches, and they began to feud with Ric Flair and Melina respectively. The match between Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell was actually a parody match, with talent from WWE's developmental territories portraying the characters. This was the early stage of a major feud between Donald Trump and Vince McMahon which would go on to headline WrestleMania 23.
On WWE's official website, it was announced that Triple H was injured with a ruptured quadriceps tendon and would not compete for 6-8 months. Michaels, however, continued his feud with Rated-RKO by teaming up with the WWE Champion John Cena and defeating them for their World Tag Team Championship. Rated-RKO eventually disbanded after their own rivalry begun. Edge and Randy Orton faced each other in a Triple Threat match, which Shawn Michaels eventually won to become the top contender to Cena's WWE Championship, in the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 23, and at Backlash in the main event for the WWE Championship. Their heated feud ended with a grueling match at the April 30 edition of Raw won by Edge.
Both Triple H and Shawn Michaels clashed many times in the year with Randy Orton. At Judgment Day, Randy Orton kayfabe ended Michaels' career after defeating him by KO. Months later, at No Mercy, Randy Orton was awarded the vacant WWE Championship by Vince McMahon and lost it to Triple H less than twenty minutes later. Orton, however, reclaimed the title when he defeated Triple H later that night in a Last Man Standing match that was previously scheduled to be between Orton and the legitimately injured John Cena. The following night, Shawn Michaels returned and desired revenge on the man who injured him five months earlier. Shawn and Orton had numerous matches, until the culmination of their feud and the year-long tension between them at Survivor Series.
