reddit also includes several topical sections called subreddits, which focus on specific topics, including programming, science, Not Safe for Work, and politics. There are currently nine subreddits.
The reddit logo changes for various holidays and often for no reason at all, paying homage to Star Wars, classic video games, and geek culture in general. There is an archive of the logos at redditalien.com.
Although reddit isn't moderated by its owners, the reddit developers have built a system to aid with curtailing spam, which works based on the "reports" of users.
In October 2007, a bug was found -- and quickly fixed -- that accidentally flagged non-spammers. Before it was caught, a blog entry about it surfaced on reddit's front page. An explanation was given by Steve Huffman himself. The mis-flagged users had their accounts repaired and apologies were made.
History
Reddit was founded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005, then 22-year-old graduates of the University of Virginia. It received its initial funding from Y Combinator. The team expanded to include Christopher Slowe and Aaron Swartz in the fall of 2005. Aaron Swartz officially joined in late January 2006 as part of the company's merger with Swartz's Infogami. The combined company was known as "not a bug". Condé Nast Publications, owner of Wired, acquired not a bug on 31 October, 2006.
After the acquisition, the more controversial section of the site, nsfw reddit, was closed; however, it was re-opened in mid-October 2007 after an upgrade of reddit.
