Regarding my page edits

Pavel I noticed that you reverted all my changes to WikiPedia. First of all, you shouldn't second guess that I was linking to my own sites as "advertising or a mere collection of external links". I am not a webmaster, nor do I own any sites. I was linking to those sites because I felt that they were beneficial to WikiPedia not only for the different pictures of composers, but also for the audio files of composers. What joy does one get from reading a biography of a musical composer, if they cannot hear some actually MUSIC of a composer. The sites I linked to provide a service which WikiPedia main site does NOT offer. Therefore your claim "Please do not add links to pages which contain no new information compared to the article" is not legitimate, for I am added a link to a page which DOES in fact give new information, in the format of music. Please put back my additions, as I feel you are harming the WikiPedia community as a whole by disallowing useful information, which could be used to enrich WikiPedia.

Actually, Pavel, that was a legitimate complaint, and I would like you to revert the changes you made, this was a legitimate submission to VfD and you have blatantly subverted the rules of Misplaced Pages in reversing my submission, I would like to submission re-set, or I will have to do it myself, thanks 68.42.0.182

Administrator

Pavel, I notice that you often post on WP:VIP when vandalism is taking place and request that repeat vandals be blocked. Would you want to be nominated for administrator? That would allow you to perform the blocks yourself. You seem to be quite active on this front, which is important for the functioning of Misplaced Pages. Firebug 18:47, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yes. I have suspicion WP:VIP is a black hole where people could complain and nothing ever comes out of it. Pavel Vozenilek 22:01, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)
You are doing great work in combating vandals here. I came to your talk page thinking to award you a barnstar, but I see Firebug is in the process of nominating you for adminship, which is much more important.
Most of the time, a vandal goes away when you post the first test message on his talkpage. I often see your messages on VIP, but when I check the vandal, they've stopped posting. A few vandals continue until they get the test4 warning and then stop. Of course, a few continue and have to be blocked. I suggest that you not post on the VIP page unless a vandal is continuing for more than a few minutes after you've put up your first warning to them (give them time to notice the warning).
You should also be aware that we never block an IP address permanently, since there's a strong likelihood that it will not be held by that particular vandal forever. You should not ask for permanent blocks on such addresses.
I'll support you for administrator when Firebug nominates you, but you have to promise that you won't block people for excessive periods, or block them without giving them fair warning that they will be blocked if they don't change their behaviour.-gadfium 02:52, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Firebug has now nominated you for adminship. Please go to Misplaced Pages:Requests for adminship/Pavel Vozenilek, accept the nomination, and answer the standard questions.-gadfium 04:47, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Regarding my RfA

Hello Pavel Vozenilek. I wanted to tell you that was promoted to admin today. Thank you for the time you took to review my contributions. Know that I will keep the concerns you raised on my RfA page in mind, and that I am doing my best to address them. Phils 20:00, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hi Pavel Vozenilek. Thanks very much for your vote for my RfA. I promise to be prudent, wise, sagacious and totally unilateral in all my admin affairs. I should say that I am very pleased at the number of people who supported me – it's very nice to know I'm making a positive impact. Cheers again, Smoddy (Rabbit and pork) 20:57, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Re: User:Whodidit

Hello Pavel. If you had checked the Vandals list, you would have seen my name under April 23: Misplaced Pages:Vandalism in Progress#Whodunit and Whodidit and Whoisit and Whowasit and now Whowillitbe. Predictably, you did not check, so now only one of my sockpuppets is blocked, and I can go on my own merry way! Nice spring day, don't you think? Anyway, gotta go, more pages are waiting to be wrecked. Bye! Whodunit 21:53, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Fiji's father

Yes. I'll find references and post them on the appropriate talk page. Mara led Fiji to independence from the United Kingdom, and Ganilau was the first president of the Fijian republic. Sukuna is generally regarded as the greatest of the three, as he forged modern political institutions in the pre-independence era and mentored the generation that led the country after independence. I believe his birthday is a national holiday. I'll check my sources, and will report back. David Cannon 00:43, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I am aware that there are different opinions about that list. The arguments have been tossed around since long before either of us was involved. I'll admit to being something of an inclusionist, so I'm biased. But I'll defer to the consensus opinion, if one emerges. Sukuna should unquestionably be in the list (I've found a source and will post in a few minutes); I believe the other two should be also, but if the strict criteria of naming only "official" national fathers is applied, they could be removed. Sukuna is official; his birthday (which is mondayzed to the last Monday in May) is a national public holiday, with public celebrations. The other two are unofficial: Mara was called the nation's father by both supporters and opponents at his funeral, as was Ganilau (whose death - in 1993 - was not "recent", as you say). Anyway, I think it's important to see what everybody else thinks and establish some consensus for the size and content of the page. There's no such thing as ownership of articles on Misplaced Pages. David Cannon 01:06, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

My RfA

Although you did not support my RfA, I would just like to thank you for your comments, which I will take in the spirit they were given. I will do my best to live up to the responsibility of adminship and hopefully show to you the trust is deserved. --khaosworks 07:07, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Whodunit

Someone else had already got this user with a 48-hour block. When that expires, we'll see what happens; I blocked his sockpuppet indefinitely, but I think that it would be wrong to block A for being a sockpuppet of B and then B for being a sockpuppet of A... I'm inclined to agree with you, though, that (if he comes back) this user is heading for an indefinite block, because he's clearly an idiot without a life who's only interested in making a fool of himself. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:12, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Dear Pavel, if only it could be that way! Whodunit may be blocked, but there are other ways I can get into Misplaced Pages. The truth is that the world is full of bad people and disappointments. If you do not brace yourself for an attack, you will most likely be overwhelmed. That's what's happening to Misplaced Pages right now. Do you not see, all these Vandals and Saxons and Goths are climbing right over Misplaced Pages's walls - the login page - and right into the castle! Then, our sysop knights try cut them down, but these vandals get back up and wreck the buildings in the fortress. Then, the only option will be to "protect" these damaged buildings from further attack. The problem is that other altruistic people are blocked from repairing these damaged buildings! The vandals move on to other buildings (there are infinitely many in this castle, remember), and then we will have to protect each building in the castle. Nobody will have freedom, and only the admins will have access to every page in Misplaced Pages. And if we make everybody into admins in order to give everyone equal rights, then we will be in the same situation as before. That's why I tried to make a point, both in my broken messages and in vandalizing Misplaced Pages: your meagre defense systems can not yet stop an obsessed vandal from wrecking Misplaced Pages. And if many strike at the same time, God knows what will happen to the Free Kingdom of Misplaced Pages... Make a petition to the programmers before it is too late, because one day, it will happen. Even if it won't, it's always better to be prepared and protected. My suggestion:

My RFA

Thank you for your comments on my RFA. Although the voting period just ended with a 14-8-2 vote, I will admit once and for all that I used it more as an evaluation of myself. Being promoted would have been a plus. I was more interested in who voted, when they voted, who would change their votes and when, and the comments I would receive. Hopefully I will correct the main weakness that was raised by those who voted oppose -- that I was too eager to put articles on VFD. Also, I will try to interact more with those Wikipedians who did not vote at all.

As for next month, I don't know if I will nominate myself again. I might not think about it until somebody else puts me up there on RFA at a later date. Eventually, I see myself as an admin, especially as the number of articles and users continues to grow. Thanks again and good luck at improving this vast archive of free knowledge. Update on Aesthetic Realism article

I continue to try to maintain a balanced article on Aesthetic Realism in the face of the vandalism by the group's supporters, who continue to try to excise criticism of the group and other salient facts, such as that their founder killed himself. They also continue to reinsert unsubstantiated claims removed by other (independent) Wikipedians, who have no experience with the group and are not on one side or the other. When either the AR people or I revert to a version that we like we generally label it as "Reverting to pre-vandalized version". Obviously each of us considers the others' edits to be vandalism.

I'm writing to you now because they labeled their latest revert, "restoring vandalized page to version of 7 Apr 2005 validated by Pavel Vozenilik". But since 7 Apr both sides and independents had added or edited quite a bit of content, and I thought that the article was finally starting to shape up. So I'm wondering about their using your name to support their recent revert. Have you seen the article since 7 Apr, and if so do you really feel that the community is better served by the 7 Apr article than by a more current version? Or do you think a more recent version is better?

Thank you for your time, Michaelbluejay 06:27, 11 May 2005 (UTC)

Germanic vs German

No doubt you are correct that a link to Germany is not ideal, although it is probably better than German which is a disambiguation page. For Germanic people the choice is between Germanic tribes and Ethnic German (Germanic itself is a disambuiguation page.) Please feel free to improve any of these links you come across, I have revisited Jihlava nd will try to do better in future! Regards, Rich Farmbrough 10:47, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Marshall and Soviet threat

Isn't the fact that Red Army was stationed in Poland, and was used as a tool (togheter with NKVD) to persecute (often, execute) Armia Krajowa members and extend pressure on the representatives of Polish government in exile and its representatives in country (theoretical coalition with communists) sufficient to say there was a military threat? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus 10:59, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Good point, it wasn't very clear - I hope if it fixed now, feel free to improve this further. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus 11:17, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Paroubek etc.

All right, I will think about it again and - if I have time - will probably put back the one paragraph about the confidence vote. My opinion on this is not that strong either, I just wanted to see what reason you had to remove it all. Anyway, glad to hear that anyone found and uses the diacritics page! Good luck. 66.25.166.173 vandal

Dear Pavel Vozenilek,

I thank you for catching vandalism to the article about Eli Siegel a while ago. The same person you caught under the IP of 66.25.166.173 has begun his nasty work again--but expanded--under the IP of 141.150.36.175 and the username of Michaelbluejay -- (or an anonymous pal of his).

Can you help?

I have called for mediation and am about to call for more. There is a lot of conversation about this matter. I hope you have time to, at least, look into it and advise.

RK string search algorithm

Pavel,

In the pseudocode of the RK string search algorithm, if hs is given as hash(s), the algorithm can not detect a target pattern which occurs on the first m bytes of a given text.

Your point on the case where m is larger than n is correct, but I thought that such a parameter range check can be assumed to have been performed prior to calling the function.

Btw, what do you think about the following sentence which is quoted from the sentence right beneath the pseudocode. "Lines 2,3, and 6 each require omega(m) time."

If you still think hs := hash(s) is correct, why don't you modify the above sentence too?

There was only one Snemovňa národou. It was elected separately in the two republics, but nevertheless it was only one body... And I am quite sure it had only 1 veto right. Hi, as you're not a native speaker of English (I guess) I just thought I'd give you the tip that describing someone's infobox as "botched up" (as you did on Děčín) will be understood as rude. Perhaps you could just write "changed template" in future. Saintswithin 07:43, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

City template for Jicin

Hi, I see your point but I hadn't found any better template so I used that one, though I am well aware of irrelevancy of some items in it (water area, the time zones…). I had a look at the one you suggested, but it still needs to be worked on, e.g. it should be able to downsize the coat of arms automatically, as template City Infobox City does. So I'd prefer leaving this one, in spite of its imperfections (I wouldn't call it botched-up, sounds too rude to me) until a better one is created, preferably an international, I don't think every country needs its own city template. Careful with that word "vandalism"!

Hi Pavel, congratulations on your dedication to the "admirable but completely hopeless battle with vandals", but do be careful that everything you revert is indeed vandalism and not just something you haven't heard of or don't understand. (It's easily done, I've been guilty of it myself.) On 20 Mar 2005 you reverted a small edit to University of Oxford as "vandalism" which was nothing of the sort. The Assassins and the Bullingdon, added by an anon contributor to the list of Oxford "Institutions", are indeed two well-known (not to say notorious) Oxford dining societies. For your interest, see my article on the Bullingdon Club. Best wishes Flapdragon 14:46, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Bay of Pigs Invasion

Just responding to your comment back in May on this page. Vandalism such as that can be easily reverted by going to the history of the page and selecting a prior version of the article before the vandalised version. Then just save the clean version as a minor edit to wipe out the inane scribblings. Apologies if you already knew this. Lisiate 22:29, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Serapeum

What specific things are you talking about? Please clarify--User:Kazuba 17 Jun 2005

Hi Pavel. I have alerted the reader something has been omitted and kept the link so that the reader will be extra watchful and learn something extra from reading the link. Here the writer has failed to show the part of the story that occurs before the Pagans have barricaded themselves in the Serapeum. What started the conflict. Something was found beneath a temple; is one of them. Only by reviewing his cited sources can this be detected. We will never know "what really happened in this story" but we can learn there can be bias reporting. In the study of literature there is a process known as redaction criticism where different versions of the same story are examined to seek the ancient author or authors' intent. This is an important lesson to learn when studying the surviving records or "stories" of the past or just about anything else. Compare. Gather data. What is the motive for telling me this story this way? Is it strictly to increase my knowlege or is there propaganda or intent involved? Be cautious and wary if you are not familiar with the subject matter, and if you are out of your field. DO NOT RUSH TO A CONVICTION! Learn about the writer from reading his material if possible. That's it. User:Kazuba 18 Jun 05

Rotten links

Can you explain to me any way these links violate Misplaced Pages's external linking policy, or hurt the articles they appear in?--TheGrza 02:17, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

Please read the articles before you decide. They are much longer then before and DO add a lot to the articles they have been linked to. There are still miniscule articles, but I am not linking to those for precisely the reasons you have noted.--TheGrza 02:26, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

As requested by User:Sockatume on the ViP page, I've posted this on RfC under Bohemian Grove (the first page I added a link to). I've also moved our conversation to that talk page in order to centralize it.--TheGrza 06:58, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

Hey, These links aren't indiscriminate and they do contain information or characterization that isn't available in the articles, specifically the Hashshashin link to al-Qaeda which is not found in either article.--TheGrza 01:47, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

Could you please take care of these links (or find more people who could) - I am unable to handle such avalanche and am giving up. I noticed VIP so hopefully he'll be stopped sometime. I have suspicion the links are added by robot, I have never seen such massive vawe of linking here. Pavel Vozenilek 02:41, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Heya, thanks for helping out. It would appear I'm getting a knack for disappearing when there's work to be done, at least it wasn't my fault for a change this time. Infobox Town

I'm still playing a bit with it, I think you're right here, I included it kinda mechanicaly, as it originaly was in many Infoboxes. I included post code info, but than removed it…, now I added elevation as it is of some relevance. If you have any other ideas what (not) to include, you're welcome. And please do sign your comments, I had to look at History to see who it was from. --Caroig 20:01, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your ideas, the tip concerning coor template sounds great but the problem is it is a template itself, so it would need to be a template within template and I simply don't know how to achieve that … As of the region links, I don't like how it is, I miss the link to region too, just don't want to have row name Region and than e.g. Pilsen Region, as of okres, this administrative unit doesn't exist anymore, so it would be obsolete.
Concerning uploading the maps to Commons, that's logical, I had the impression everything gets uploaded to the Commons primarily, obviously I was wrong. When I finish the English version of the template, I'll put it on Czech Misplaced Pages too (keeping mayor in it). — Caroig 20:46, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I managed to get the coor template working, tested on Plasy, I found it in some Dutch template, once again thanks for the tip, it's really great feature.
I know the Commons is there for quite some time, and when I don't forget, I do use it.
Well, my maps are even larger, partly because I use aplha channel in them (so that the map has transparent backgound), I tried saving them as GIFs, which don't have alpha channel as such but instead can map one color as transparent, and then their size is just below 10kB, but GIF isn't prefered format here, from obvious reason. — Caroig 22:01, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Regarding those sizes, the lowest I can get a PNG in the same resolution (256x150) is 5.9kB (without the alpha channel), 9.4KB with it (saved as indexed color PNG with eight bits per pixel), probably it's not needed to save the maps as RGB True Color… The thing is I havent't given it a thought, I'm on cable, thus I don't care much about sizes, but not all people are that happy, I know… So I'll try to resample all those maps probably into those 8bit indexed PNG, but not today, zzz. — Caroig 22:01, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I'm trying to make the template so it's versatile, I don't know if you looked at the code, but the word kraj is not part of the template, so if you need, you can simply set region_name=okres or whatever you like…
Actually, you can reach me at ICQ# 223100190 (or any other IM, I have accounts at most of them, though I don't use them regulary), it might be more usefull to discuss it directly. But now I'm really going to bed. — Caroig 22:10, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've made a few changes to the template, removed the info on mayor and replaced it with Founded (year, when the town was founded or the first written record), it gives the general idea of how old title town/city is.

You mean there would be both region and district in the Infobox? I don't think it's reasonable to have both there. Kraj is the most important "region" in Czechia nowadays, both from local and foreign visitor's point of view, okres is of little relevance today and the information doesn't need to be in the infobox, which, I guess, should give you just basic data about the town.

I tried to make the infobox to be reusable for other countries, to be rather general. So in case U really wanted to have okres rather than kraj in it, you can do it as follows (but this would still be inconsistent with other towns):

 region_type=okres|
region_name=Pardubice| … this would show as clickable and take you to the page specified in:
 region_link=Pardubice District| … the actual link
 region_local=Pardubice|

As before I test the template on PlasyCaroig 20:26, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Concerning the maps, I uploaded two blank templates to the Commons, "high" quality version (true color RGB PNG, 34kB) and "low" quality version (256 indexed colors PNG, 13kB). The "low" quality version is, I guess, fully sufficient.

File:Czechia region template high.png

Not so funny

Or should I say "Nazi" funny? BUT DO YOU KNOW THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION I'VE RAISED? Wahkeenah 02:14, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Aha, maybe you've never actually heard these actors talk, and don't get the point of the category. Megan Mullally always talks in this kind of ultra-high-pitched voice on the TV show "Will & Grace". I've actually heard her real voice, which is somewhat lower pitched. Bobcat Goldthwait always sounds like he has sandpaper for vocal cords. I don't know if it's real or not. And Gilbert Gottfried always talks in this irritating, screechy kind of voice. I find it hard to believe it's real. I'm sure there are other actors who fit this category, I just can't think of them right now. Wahkeenah 02:26, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Interesting. So you're not opposed to the idea, as such, just the way I did it. That's some food for thought. Actually, such an article could be very large. I'll see what I can come up with. Probably not tonight, though. :) Wahkeenah 03:00, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Blood type.

Thanks, you are right, that was confusing. I've tried to rewrite it, and moved it to the next section to avoid a forward reference. I've extended it somewhat. The idea I really want to get across is that there are no common blood types. Do you think that point is made in an encyclopedic manner now? Thanks for the critism Zeimusu | (Talk page) 03:01, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ahmadinejad and populism

Could you take a look at my answer on my talk page? roozbeh 15:01, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

Re: Using Talk pages

When you do revert on outright vandalism, please add warning note to offender Talk page - e.g. with blanker you reverted. While it is sort of nuisance it helps with establishing clear record for future dealing with the vandal. Thanks. Pavel Vozenilek 14:48, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I generally already do this (as you can tell by looking at my contribution history), although I occasionally miss one, usually because I got distracted or my browser crashed or something else happened. Sometimes I won't add an additional warning if I (or someone else) has already warned within the past minute or so; I don't believe in escalating warning levels that the vandal may not had a chance to read. Infoboxes

Hi, I'd like to inform you on some progress on Infoboxes. I'm quite happy with the current state of the template and going to suggest the use of it for towns in other countries. There are now two more version of this template:

I know that this solution via two more templates isn't the best one, but I don't know how two achieve not displaying a blank field in a template or if it is possible at all. I read some help pages on this topic, but haven't found an answer. If you do know how to do that, I'd be greatfull for your advice.

I also provided quite an extensive help Template Talk:Infobox Town on the template use.

I also tried a new template Template:Infobox Region using the same graphic layout, which contains a little bit different set of information and should be suitable for any categories of administrative units. I tried it on Moravian-Silesian Region (which is mostly my doing, so that I don't interfere with your ongoing work). Again, your suggestions are welcome. There is also a version when no coat of arms is available (Template:Infobox Region noC).

Finally, I'm happy that you found the Czech republic regions map template usefull. I also started uploading all pictures into Commons, even some of those I uploaded to Misplaced Pages before, and I'm too using the "low" quality, smaller indexed color PNGs. —Caroig 15:41, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I would mainly like to submit texts and pictures, I worked on those templates because I found the current system a bit chaotic and the layout of some of the templates rather pre-historic, not worth Misplaced Pages. My time is scarce too, I won't be able to do much during summer, at least I will take pictures which I might submit later. — Caroig 15:54, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Plzeň

Hi Pavel, I'm sorry about the Plzeň article. I think what had happened was that I had tried moving the page, but that didn't work. I checked the talk page on the <Plzen> article but there was not much written. In fact, I made a copy of what was there:

Talk:Plzen . Stod is small city (3500 inhabitants in 2001) in southwest (), 20 km from .

That's it.

Sorry about the inconvenience.

Regards,

Arbitration request

Ahoj,

I don't think arbitration is the right way how to deal with it now. User Sumnakay (even with his possible accounts) is relative newbie. All the lacking knowledge of wikiquette and POV pushing in edits etc. possibly can be accounted to that. You know - disucussion culture on Misplaced Pages is quite different from many internet forums.

Also, it seem to me Sumnakay improved his behaviour after requests of other users, e.g. signs his comments and no longer edits others comments. I've returned your comment to its original shape and removed Nazi-like attacs.

I've requested on Misplaced Pages:Clueless newbies someone explain Sumnakay in nice and polite manner a bit of wikiquette, and hope it will help. I beleive he is editing in good faith, trying to improve Misplaced Pages to contain "the right view".

Anyway, I don't think it's likely ArbCom will accept the request. It's really the last step in conflict resolution, and here were just several attacks of user Sumnakay, severeal other users tried to appease it, and thats all. Also the attacks doesnt seem to continue. If some unpleasant behaviour reappears, I'd suggest previous steps, such RFC on user behaviour. --Wikimol 29 June 2005 11:17 (UTC)

České Budějovice and Plzeň

Nazdar Pavel - I'll continue in English since this is an English speaking forum. I have noticed that NoPuzzleStranger initiated changes to both articles. He is pushing a wording change to foreign name references indicating that Pilsen and Budweis are not current English name alternatives.

I have found several examples of current use of both Pilsen and Budweis in English language texts by the local population, including the municipal web site of the City of Pilsen. Obviously, both names are used by foreigners as well - for historical or practical reasons.

I disagree with his changes and have noticed at least one other user who feels the same way. I remember your name from discussions with Juro and would value your opinion. Jbetak 1 July 2005 19:01 (UTC)

Košice attack

Pavel, forgive my ignorance WRT to the mistake in my corrections to this article. I assumed that Slovak State had been a mistake. Thanks for the heads-up. Fernando Rizo 4 July 2005 04:07 (UTC)

Re: Everyone's vegetarian

Maybe Isaac Newton being a vegetarian is not relevant to you, but it is relavant to me. Since when does one person decide what is relevent for everybody else. The vegetarian category includes other philosophers as well. I was trying to improve the category by adding all notable/famous people that have followed vegetarianism during their lifetime. Nobody said the lives of the people in the category revolved around vegetarianism. As the category states, "The following is a category of notable people who followed vegetarianism as a conscious choice during their lifetime". He is definitely a notable person, so he belongs in the category. --Musicpvm 02:42, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
