- Keep (with a proviso): The image is of clear relevance to the Matt Sanchez article - it illustrates the conduct of the debate relating to Matt at Columbia University. The juxtaposition of images creates a poster with meaning substantially in variance from that of the original copyright-restricted photographs. It allows the reader to consider the rhetoric in that debate in a way different from that provided by a textual summary, and thus is an appropriate illustrative image. The proviso on my suggestion relates to the legailty, which is an area I am unqualified to judge. John's fair use rationale seems reasonable to me, and the image is certainly not replaceable; however, I do not know whether this is sufficient for a valid fair use justification. - That may be a problem, but it is completely irrelevant to whether we want to keep this image under fair-use.
- The "Free" aspect of this image is to do with redistribution of this photograph; the "fair use" tag has to do with the reuse of the image, where some non-free elements within the prevent it from being completely free. The crux of the issue is whether the GFDL license requires that all elements are reusable without limitation - my understanding of the GFDL is that it does not have wording to that effect.

- The rule you're referring to: Significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. Well, it does increase the reader's understanding of the topic, it is the officail picture for the official event, unless there is a rule that says event posters are not to be used in an event article.
