With three of its members (], ] and ]) all very prolific songwriters by the time ''The Notorious Byrd Brothers''' recording began in June ], it was inevitable that there would be some ego clashing. After Crosby's sensational "Lady Friend" single proved a flop as a Byrds single and was not reserved a spot on the album, David was further aggravated when his brow-raising "menage-a-trois" opus "Triad" was axed due to its controversial nature. As a result, he began to lose interest in further sessions (refusing to take part in their cover of "Goin' Back" which was replacing "Triad") and finally, in October, McGuinn and Hillman formally fired Crosby.
In addition, drummer ] was becoming more and more disenchanted with the sessions, even telling the band he didn't like the songs (as captured on a revealing excerpt of the band cutting "Dolphin's Smile" as a hidden track at the end of the remastered CD). By December, after the cover was shot (featuring the infamous horse which, according to McGuinn, was NOT a dig at Crosby), Clarke too had departed, leaving Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman as the only members left in what was once a five-piece band.
''The Notorious Byrd Brothers'' stands today as a marvellous recording, full of invention, imagination and daring. However, in the UK, the album was a surprise hit, making #12.
Time, however, has improved ''The Notorious Byrd Brothers''' standing exponentially and it stands among the best albums of the 1960's.
