Watching Anti-Science POV admin candidates
Articles on Quackademic Medicine
Below are articles articles, mostly medical but some in the sciences, that promote ideas or POV's that might endanger human life. Feel free to add your own, but I'm watching and cleaning up these articles. Please sign if you add something.
- List of medicinal herbs-lacks any references, and implies these drugs can help.Orangemarlin 00:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Herbalism-same as above Orangemarlin 00:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Homeopathy-ridiculous Orangemarlin 00:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Attachment therapy-don't let your children go there Orangemarlin 00:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC) This has been rewritten since User:AWeidman (Dr Becker-Weidman) and his 6 socks were indef banned. Fainites 16:45, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
- Medicinal plants of the American West-more unsourced POV edits Orangemarlin 00:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Alternative medicine-more of the same Orangemarlin 00:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Naturopathic medicine-Actually not completely off the wall, but some parts are bad. Orangemarlin 00:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
- Er, Duesberg hypothesis and poppers could both use more work, and talk about endangering lives... especially the former. MastCell 18:54, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- I'd also add ephedra to the list... I did a lot of work cleaning it up and it's not so bad anymore (it actually references the serious harms and deaths associated with ephedra supplements in a way that goes beyond referring to the FDA as jackbooted thugs, now). But much of the same material is duplicated in ECA stack, which I haven't been as successful with, and which I fear gives an erroneous impression as to the safety record of ephedra-containing dietary supplements. MastCell 19:20, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Arguably, Reflexology, though that's probably not actually dangerous, just ridiculously oversold. Adam Cuerden 00:51, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
- Vaccine controversy. Anti-vaxers are really dangerous. -- Fyslee / talk 08:27, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hulda Clark. A dangerous scam. -- Fyslee / talk 08:27, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- Gary Null. Advocates nonsense. -- Fyslee / talk 08:27, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- Joseph Mercola. Advocates nonsense and repeated run ins with the FTC. -- Fyslee / talk 08:27, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- rebirthing, reparenting, Power therapies. Primal Scream therapy. I would treat Neurolinguistic Programming as the main hub for many of them though. Its a subject that seems to be the main pseudoscientific umbrella that is used by most of them to give the false impression of scientific appearance. Its incredibly widespread and extremely misleading to the less scientifically literate. Here is a good source; . Phloem (talk) 05:33, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
- anyone who wants to work on this complex of article, I'll be glad to help. Time we got to the pseudo-psychology. DGG (talk) 21:18, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- try Eisner in The death of psychotherapy, Chapter 3 "Cathartic Therapies:From Primal to est". A little out of date but .... Fainites 22:20, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
- coral calcium. I just put in some references, but there is a lot more that can be done. That someone would think that coral calcium can be used as a panacea for all types of cancer when in fact excess calcium can, in some cases, be detrimental to certain cancer treatments means that we should be very careful how the claims of the coral calcium fanatics are treated. ScienceApologist (talk) 21:38, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- Mannatech. An article about a company that purveys sugars, calling them health products (glyconutrients). Antelan 02:39, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Medical articles
Below are articles that I believe, along with any trusted science and medicine editors who may wish to contribute, meet the simple test of being well-written, do not give undue weight to fringe theories, and are either WP:GA or WP:FA:
Salacious talk of eye-candy on my page is not permitted..
Ye gods man, I am a pillar of the community and cannot be seen to engage in salacious talk of eye-candy, I mean really there are much better candidates than her....(cold shower, cough splutter...bbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr).....if you like intellectual sci-fi you must have seen this though --> The Lost Room. highly recommended. :) Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 20:28, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
New Project
Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.
If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Misplaced Pages namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 04:43, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm
Orangemarlin...I keep seeing your name pop up in different places, and what I've learned from seeing your contributions is that you are definitely here as a content builder, content protector, article starter, and article protector. You seem to have a knack for protecting Misplaced Pages from fringists, quacks, and their ilk. At the same time, I can clearly remember being very terse with you in the past. Allow me to explain myself. I'm an admin. (Deserved or not is irrelevant at the moment :-) I'm not, by any stretch, an article person. I'm a meta-person. My niche is, as I see it anyway, is as a "content defender", meaning I defend, to the end, those particular editors that decide to keep Misplaced Pages clean from fringists, etc. Where did I get a negative opinion of you? I can't find it in diffs, but I remember it. But I'd like switch. I'd like to be an admin-defender for you (not that you need it necessarily, but it surely wouldn't hurt). All this rambling to say, is that I'd like to put water under the bridge of wherever you and I crossed paths where we've given each other bad impresssions (as I'm sure my own ill will feelings towards you are certainly mutual)... I've had a negative opinion of you, I freely admit it, and I'm not sure where it came from, but I'd like it to go away. I firmly believe that article builders/defenders are the core of Misplaced Pages, and I firmly believe that you are one of those core article building/protecting editors. I'm not one of those myself, but with block/delete/protect buttons, however the hell I earned them and by whatever fluke, I can at least help in my own small way. Are you willing to help me reconcile? (Again, I know that I have a negative opinion, but I can't find out the roots of it. I'm willing to let bygones be bygones. Help me out?) Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 22:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- DUDE!!!!! You're now giving me work. I've got to find one of those 15,000 edits where you and I might have battled. Or I could take the easy way out, and say, "sure, I really appreciate it." I'm going to be lazy. :) Bygones are definitely bygones. Hell, I'm actually quite loyal to User:B, whom I once considered a Creationist admin, and now, well I still think he's a Creationist admin, but he's an honorable one. He also hates racism as much as I do, so he gets like 47.212 points out of a possible 50 for being a good guy. Anyways, honestly I don't remember if we battled, but I do think of myself as builder of this project. I don't like the political crapola, and stay out of it mostly. I just prefer to focus on building articles into good shape, keep the anti-science fringe element under control (but am willing to listen once to one argument from them--the tendentious crap doesn't make me happy). Anyways, thanks. OK, to be honest, I'm not that lazy, and I'm going to dig this up.OrangeMarlin 22:29, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- Excellent. I really want to improve my "image" of you. I honestly don't remember what it was, but I "vaguely" remember telling you that you were "always sarcastic" or some such. Let me know what you find. Either way, I'll be glad to move along and help you "protect/build" this insane website. Ask Malleus if you need my credentials for protecting article builders. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 22:33, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- I am always sarcastic. LOL. OK, I'm not getting what you want to do. Mentor me? Not going to work so well. It's probably my arrogant, narcissistic self image which will not allow that. Protect me? I'm sorry but that might be hard work. It's kind of a 24/7 responsibility. Learn from me? I make a poor teacher. So????? I'm confoozled. OrangeMarlin 22:58, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- I've been known to be rather sarcastic myself. No, I have no intentions of mentoring you. that would be rather presumptuous, seeing as how you've been here longer than me. Protect you? No, not necessarily. I'm merely suggestion that you (and I) bury the hatchet (wherever it is). I have a fondness for article builders, because I'm not one, and freely admit it. You are one. And you defend articles. I'm not trying to "learn from you" either, as you and I, both being rather bullheaded, would probably disengage as soon as one or the other of us tried to tell the other what to do. I'm simply trying to clear my own perceptions of you, which, right or wrong, have bgeen negative. (probably wrong). Anywho, all that to say, best of luck to you in your editing. You are now on my watchlist (obviously), and I'll watch for your article contribs from now on to "protect" you from fringists. Hope you don't mind :-) If you find the diffs where you and I butted heads, let me know! I am certain they exist, but I can't find them either....Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 23:06, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds perfect. Regarding the diffs, I gave up. I had no clue when to search to narrow the number of diffs. OrangeMarlin 23:09, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- As much as it's going to bug me, I can't find the diffs either, although I know they exist. Either way, I'm glad you agree to call them bygones. Keep up the good work (and by "work", I of course mean article building/protecting/defending). Let me know if you need any admin assistance from this point forward. Cheers, (which means I'm a heavy drinker :-) Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 23:18, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

<outdent>All that to say, are there other "article builders" that you know of that could use admin assistance? I meant that to say, for whatever reason, your name crossed my mind, as someone that could perhaps use an additional "eye". Any others that I can approach? I'm serous in my intentions. If you look at my last thousand contribs, they are all talkpages/metapages/wikipages. I'm not an article builder. Therefore, I have an enormous respect for those that are article builders/starters/defenders. Names? (and, if you're watching this, and are an "ally" of Om's), let me know! I'll happ8ily defend you as well. Again, ask Malleus. My mission on Misplaced Pages is to defend article writers/builders/defenders. Let me know where I can assist. Tor node to block
Orangemarlin, I've just reverted an insult on this page that originated from a Tor nde. You might want to block the IP. Durova 00:12, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Last revert
To explain that - I wrongfully removed a sourced section of Guettarda's edit, and had replaced it - the bit about "While similar to some of her beliefs..." Also, I misread the source, the "false dilemma" stated by Picard was not between science and religion, but between intelligent design and evolution. Parsing words, maybe, but important to get right. FCYTravis (talk) 07:03, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. This debate is heated enough, and we don't need to get it over the boiling point. We all agree on the big picture, and in cases like Robert J. Marks II, it's pretty clear that a person is an out-and-out ID proponent. I just think we need to be extremely careful at the margins - with people like Picard - not to go overboard in damning them with the DI brush where the situation is far murkier and there's no certainty that they're actually in favor of the DI/ID agenda. FCYTravis (talk) 07:10, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Heads-up on Robert J. Marks II
Talk:Robert J. Marks II#Major restructure of Baylor Engineering/Computer Science website makes some sense of, but in no way justifies, ThomHImself's recent edit-war on Robert J. Marks II. He was edit-warring over a bunch of easily replacable broken links. HrafnStalk 09:04, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
