Jarilo (Yarilo, Jaro, Cyrillic Ярило) is a scarecrow made of straw which the East Slavs burn on the Ivan Kupala night. There is a point of view that Jarilo used to be a Slavic god of spring fertility. Modern images represent him as a young man dressed in white with a wheat wreath on his head, wheat ears in his right hand and a human head in his left hand. Christianity associates him with Saint George.
The slavic root jar or yar means spring or summer, being cognate to English "year".
