The first major product to be sponsored by the company is "Ubuntu", a Debian-based Linux distribution. Other open source projects sponsored by Canonical include the Bazaar revision control system, and TheOpenCD project.
Canonical is registered in the Isle of Man and employs staff around the world.
The company raises controversy about its behavior when contributing to free software project. Some argues that they use the Embrace_and_extend model to get control on the project rather than focusing on improving it.
