In 2008, the school was surrounded by controversy when a group of twenty-two students in an AP Language and Composition class formed a cheating ring by stealing copies of tests and distributing them through e-mail. Students coined the scandal "Operation Bonzai" as a reference to one of leading members of the ring. As a result of the scandal, several students received referrals and all students previously part of the National Honors Society were dismissed.

Recently, the scandal has escalated toward new heights. A group of teachers at the school known as the "faculty council" was assembled to reinstate the disgraced students into the National Honors Society. The convicted students reportedly bribed the teachers into forming this society using extorted ] and the society was able to use its influence to reinstate the students. Observers have labeled this new incident as "Operation Gypsy Power." The reinstatement of the formerly convicted students has led to a public outrage among other students citing double standards and favorable treatment. As of April 16, 2008, a petition to once again remove the students from National Honors Society has been started, Codename: "Justice."

The incident has received considerable local media coverage in papers such as the Ahwatukee Foothills News and the Ahwatukee Republic.

Upon hearing of this scandal, student Kirk DeSean Marion said: "I think this is a very irresponsible decision on the part of the council. For students to cheat and still be allowed to remain in an organization called the 'National Honors Society' is ludicrous."

Junior Miwako Matsuzaka, who is part of NHS, said: "This is a prime example of the school system offering its top students amnesty for something as severe as leaking a test. I am very disappointed with this decision. It clearly shows an unwillingness to enforce ethics."

Senior Tim "Fire-Arm" Jerome, a member of the varsity eight-square team, finds the situation to be grim. Jerome (21.5 ppg, 3.2 apg, 10 ppg off of cherry bombs) said: "Distributing a test and being allowed to remain in an academic-based honors society would be like our team getting caught rigging the ball before the game, and still being allowed to stay on the team. It is poor judgment on the administration's behalf."

Tradition shows we are a team.

In hearts and minds we are the Pride
Go Pride! Go Pride!.
Fight on MPHS!
Our purpose is to be the best.
Maroon and Gold we do unite.
We are family for Pride we fight!
Fight Pride! Fight Pride!
Oh mighty Pride!
Our spirit's strong!
With lion's strength we all belong.
When we perform for Pride we stand.
So hear our roar through all the land!
We are MP!
