=== Interstate 710 ===

I am not sure where to find very good info on some of the ]'s history. Mostly I have been relying on either some of CalTrans documents or http://www.cahighways.org. However, I know that:
#Exit #1 is designated as Anaheim Street, thus I assume that this is currently the highway's official southern terminus.
#710 is a "Non-chargable" Interstate route . It never got federal funding, but is signed as an Interstate to provide continuity and connectivity. Most of 710 is signed as an Interstate because it already passes ].
#But the portion from Hwy 1 South to Ocean Blvd is a type B "Non-chargable" Interstate. That segment technically cannot be signed as an Interstate until its upgraded to Interstate standards.

You can probably find a bit more information at http://www.cahighways.org/505-805.html#710 (Which reminds me, I have to check if the ] article does mention "chargable" v. "non-chargable" routes). ] ] 10:54, 13 August 2005 (UTC)

== LA Galaxy ==

I couldn't find your edits in the LA Galaxy history. Were you on another account? :Ha, I just assumed it was the Galaxy when you were talking about Chivas. ] has a point -- the rosters don't have the accents, but he ''was'' open to having them after the pipe. After reading the discussion on the ] page, my view is that the players' names should be spelled as close to how they write their own names as possible (for example, if Lopez was never López until he was on Chivas, then it should stay Lopez). How we determine that ... I don't know. Regards, ] 15:41, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

==GIS software==

Interesting question! I don't know any free GIS software myself; since I work for a big company we use the commercial stuff (ESRI, AutoDesk, even a bit of MapInfo). I'm actually the department manager. Since there is a loose corporate policy discouraging open source software I haven't explored it (ESRI stuff is expensive: a basic ArcView 9.1 license at the lowest level is several thousand). Strictly as a GIS exercise, though, what you describe should be straightforward. If you want to show someone's movement through time, add a numerical attribute to the table of cities they inhabit (which would be points) -- the attribute would probably be years (1865, 1888, 1912, etc). Then use those points to build a polyline with the vertices ordered by what is in the attribute table; then give it a linetype of arrow. (As with all GIS problems there might be more than one solution too.)

A cheaper but not open-source option is to grab an ArcView 3.2 off of eBay; 3.2 is still quite useful and robust, and can be obtained fairly inexpensively (needs a patch to run in XP though). Hope this helps! ] ] 15:29, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

:Hi again! Almost all GIS programs allow you to link to an Excel file, though frankly I never use the .xls format: if I do data entry in Excel I always save down to a .dbf (DB4, DB3 or dBASE) first. You can't go wrong with .dbf for data attributes. ArcView uses .dbf for their shape file attributes. It sounds to me that attaching a genealogy database to a GIS is not all that trivial; there's a number of ways to set it up. ] ] 14:39, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

==Just deserts?==
Thanks for bring that to my attention. The term "low desert" also extends here to the Colorado Desert, so I don't think a merger would be particularly accurate. There's also more of the Colorado Desert here in California than there is Sonoran. The Antelope Valley and Mojave Desert northward are high desert, FWIW. I'll keep an eye on this. - ] 16:24, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
:Appreciate you bringing this to editor's attention. I agree with Lucky, and Lucky must know better than I about "There's also more of the Colorado Desert here in California than there is Sonoran." AFAIK, The Colorado Desert is the distinctly California term for the Sonoran desert. . . i.e., the Sonoran Desert is the larger overall term, and the Colorado Desert is the subset name for this desert within California.
:The terms '''High Desert''' and '''Low Desert''' are syllable-saving terms referring to the ] and ] respectively (doncha love radio/TV news readers?). The names refer to relative elevation compared to sea level.
:Just so you know, the ], ], ], ], and ] all lie within the Mojave Desert. These are not ''all'' the regional names for areas within the Mojave Desert. . . but these are the most well known perhaps. On desert questions, Lucky and I are probably your best experts at present. Thanks again for inquiring with us first. That other desert dude, --] 13:27, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
::BV, your edits look just fine. Dunno why the article ''couldn't'' be merged, but I'm fine with it not being merged. The term ''Low Desert'' like its sister ''High Desert'' is really a syllable - saving term for the benefit of the radio/TV weatherfolk, IMO.
::BTW, I really like your "Statement in Black" you've made. I too mourn the loss of good editors due to incivility. Yours most kindly, --] 23:51, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
:::Yeah, I understand what you're saying about Tuscon and "Low Desert." I've always wondered why Tusconians would use the term - my kneejerk guess is to distinguish themselves from the Phoenicians to their northwest. There may in fact be an elevation difference of note between the two localities - worth checking out some more. How I edit, BTW, is to refrain from putting into Misplaced Pages such "guesses" as this one without sourcing it out via a reliable source (and not everything on the Internet is always reliable, as you probably already know). But since you have a NWS source which I didn't know about, you're probably safe to include Tuscon into the article in the way you told me earlier. The only funny feeling I have regarding Tuscon in this regard is Phoenix, IMHO, isn't "High Desert." (But maybe the Mogollon Rim plays into this in ways I dunno as yet.) The REM reference doesn't surprise me, either. I now understand the rationale for having a Sonoran Desert article as well as a Low Desert article. Good work! --] 00:15, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

I'm a Spanish student of Japanese Literature. As there's no enough information in he Spanish wikipedia (we're working on it) I included a external link to a serious page of "The tale of Genji" in Spanish. Dear friend,

As I'm pretty new in wikipedia editing, I don't want to disturb the rules but I would like to include the link again for what I said before. Is that right?--] 18:11, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

:I agree that English is the most prevalent language on the Internet, as well as the primary language for conducting international business, and even the language most often use by scientific journals. Enlish is the ] of the World. Even though there is a small, but very vocal group of Misplaced Pages editors who insist that http://en.wikipedia.org should be for primary English speakers, I think that they should recognize that it is really an international encyclopedia that just happens to be written in English. On the En.Misplaced Pages there are users and editors from around the World. But there is one thing that they all share in common&mdash;they all have some knowledge and understanding of English.

:For ] there are links to 15 different Wikipedias. Links for those languages should go in those Misplaced Pages. A link in Spanish is just as useless for most users of the En.Misplaced Pages as a link to a website in ] would be in the Es.Misplaced Pages.

::The relavant rule in this situation is at ]:

:::Is it accessible? In general, external links should be accessible by the widest audience possible.

::This section talks about payments and special requirements, but having the linked website in the English-language also fits under the criteria of being "accessible by the widest audience possible." ]<font color=#2554C7> </font>] 18:32, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

Dear friend,

I’ve spent these days checking the wikipedia pages and rules to check how it works. I didn’t want to be stubborn regarding such a serious project as wikepedia. My personal conclusions are:

] is not ] (you mentioned it as an example). It is the third language in the world and –unofficially- the second one in he ]. As you can see in the wikipedia article dedicated to Spanish, now is considered the second most important language in he world.

So, including a Spanish link would be accessible by the widest audience possible if you consider that Spanish speakers who get to the English version of ] (remember that the Spanish articles about Genji are poorer and incomplete). Remember we are talking about a link, not about the content, so I think these links could be included if it’s clear that they are in Spanish.

Also, in the non-English pages it’s quite common to see this {{en icon}} what means that it’s an English external link. Why could it be allowed in other languages and forbidden in the English ones?

With my respects to your experience, and with no purpose of imposing my ideas, I really think I’m behaving right if I include Spanish links when it’s necessary.

On the other hand, when we finish our article of ] in Spanish for the ], or when the information about this is complete enough in Spanish, I will take out the link because it wouldn’t be necessary anymore. For the moment, take into account that –not even- one complete translation of The tale of Genji is available in Spanish and that this masterpiece need the best resources to be celebrated.

Best,

What sample size is "representative" depends in part on what you're trying to find out from your sample. If there were some binary classification of articles as being on either "the sciences" or "the arts" and you wanted to estimate the percentage in each of those two classes, you might not be doing so badly with a random sample of maybe 30 articles. If you wanted to estimate the average length of articles, at least my gut reaction is you'd want more because the distribution of lengths would presumably be skewed. For some other purposes, you might need a much larger sample. And a big caveat: just how reliable is the "random article" button on Misplaced Pages? ] 21:03, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

Good work doing the {{tl|California-south-geo-stub}}s. Your enigma is actually a rather interesting historical name here, and whether or not it still exists depends on if you are a newer resident or an old-timer or native like me. I say Sun Village still exists, but the US Census Bureau does not have any data on Sun Village apart from Littlerock. So the Census folks may have overruled me (look of resignation). To complicate the matter, if one is African-American, the (general) answer is it exists; if one is any other race, the (general) answer is it is the north portion of Littlerock. The Littlerock Town Council had a meeting on the subject a month or two ago and it drew in an overflow crowd (I know about it from attendees I know well). To say the issue is contentious is the understatement of the year!

With the above in mind, I edited the article just now. I hope it is NPOV. It is not a city or even town (as adults use the term and is actually grounded in governmental law), and the US Census Bureau does not list it as a CDP. So I reassigned it as a LA County region category. BTW, all the Internet maps (Mapquest, Yahoo, and Google) get the boundaries wrong - sometimes wildly so. Google has it the best of the three, but even it does not understand the difference between Sun Village and Pearland (now annexed into the city of Palmdale). You gotta ask an AV native, but again, we AV natives and newer residents are having a row about the boundary issue right now.

FYI, the post office is in downtown Littlerock (93543) and the Thomas Guide doesn't help any because, again, Sun Village is in some ways a state of mind or a social construct and not a well defined geographic place. Stay tuned. . . and thanks for checking in with me. You know I respect your work very highly. Please let me know if you need anything more from me on this or other items in the future. --] 04:44, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

==More ]==
Just checked what you've been working on, and I noticed you had concerns about upgrading the ], ] and ] articles per your notes at the SoCal WikiProject. Here's where you may help me, so I may help you and the 'pedia: I'm trying to reduce the puffery and grandiose statements in the ] article (check out the talk page there for my statement for background). Once that article is stablized, I will be more free to help out the Lancaster article. From there, Littlerock should be a fun diversion, and I've already tackled Sun Village to a good degree tonight.

Would you be so kind as to watch my back as I work to revise the Palmdale article? I'd be most grateful if you would! Keep in mind I have a nonWikipedia life as well to tend to, and while on the Wiki, I also have other interests besides Antelope Valley geography articles that I find of priority from time to time. I tend to rotate between my diverse interests so I don't burn out. I appreciate your kind support in advance. --] 05:23, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

:Thanks for your support. Lucky already knows. Yeah, the ] article is a charming read. . . notice the editors from the history tab? One of them is my problematic editor who has so thoroughly junked the Palmdale article, I think. Notice the sources reference nonexistent historical societies (or at the least, wrongly named ones). There is undoubtably a good deal of truth in the article, but the "growing" part and the romantic wording will eventually have to go. Just not right this second. --] 06:23, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

::Ahem. . .looking at the edit history again, it looks like Lisa Wright did the "growing" part and the romantic wording. This could be a Westside School District student who doesn't know the exact names of the historical societies (I'm a member of one of them). I take back my words. . . it looks like the edit is genuine, though without direct specified sources to check. If you ever come out my way, give me an email and we'll go see beautiful Neenach together. . . it really is as good as Lisa says it is! --] 06:35, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

:::The comparison you make is right on. . . and appalling. I'm trying to stop the inanity ''now'' rather than wait until it becomes as devastatingly bad as your "doghouse" article. Eventually there will be others you may team up with to junk and rebuild that article. . . in the meantime, have you considered Wikinfo as a place to put your article version? Just a "dumb" thought. --] 13:25, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

== Trouble @ the Biff Rose corral ==

I realize that you might be a friend of willmcw and therefore will disregard my post because of our seemingly at odds stance. I will proceed nonetheless. Willmcw has been writing smarmy and misleading psots on the biff rose talk page, concerning the word nigger. The word is a topic because Rose uses the word as a derogatory reference to black african americans. I noted that if he were to use the word in the fashion of other siongers, devaluing or politicizing the word, that would be one thing, but to use it as a racial slur is another. Willmcw then wrote a blurb that seemed to imply through his scarcasm that I meant no one could use the word nigger. This is very troubling, because it is his stance in the editing of this article that it is of very little importance the level of racism and anti setmicism making it into Rose's later lyrics. If you wouldn't mind discussing again with willmcw the pertinence of leaving POV and sarcasm out of the talk pages I would greatly appreciate it.] 06:15, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for supporting me on my RfA. It's always nice to get some positive feedback. I hope I can put my new abilities to some good use. -- grm_wnr Esc 17:39, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi BlankVerse. Thank you for supporting my recent RfA. I was surprised and humbled by the number of positives votes. I'll be monitoring RfA regularly from now on and will look for a chance to "pay it forward". In light of your comments, I'll also try to play an active role in trying to help SchmuckyTheCat, Huaiwei and Instantnood resolve their differences. Cheers, --MarkSweep 02:32, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi BlankVerse! Thanks for the compliment on the Presidio article; I'll put it in the DYK queue (usually I forget). Compliments are rare here, and I really appreciate it.

Btw, couldn't agree more with the first comment on your user page: "...mourning the loss of civility and and the loss of too many good editors from the Misplaced Pages." It's true, and this has been bugging me for some time. There's ten times more complaining about bad behavior, and organized pillories and punishments, than rewards and kudos. Not sure what to do about it, but losing good editors to burnout is a bad thing. Peace and happy editing, Antandrus (talk) 14:48, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

About rotating the photo of the New Otani...

Hello:

Rotating the photo is fine. I wish I had a higher quality original but unfortunately, my digital camera at the time was a real piece of junk (I have a better one now, as you may have noticed from my recent uploads). --Coolcaesar 17:31, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

KRCD

It might not be total booshwah, but it isn't terribly accurate AFAIK. There's an "X-103.1" alternative station in San Bernardino but I don't know the call letters. 103.1 out here is soft rock and 103.9 is a translator for a classic rock station at 106.9 in Yucca Valley. I may Google "X 103.1" when I have a moment. Work's kind of hectic this morning.  :) - Lucky 6.9 17:41, 15 September 2005 (UTC)
