Saint Ignatius College began in Queen Street, ] in 1951, on the site of the old ] school. The catalyst was Archbishop Matthew Beovich's<ref>, Sisters of St Joseph, retrieved 2008-10-10.</ref> increasing interest in commencing more formalised Catholic schooling in Adelaide. Thus the ] boys' day school was established. The initial intake was from Grade 3 onwards. (Students prior to this year level were educated at ], St Joseph's Memorial School (the local Parish school), or the local state schools.) | |||
In 1967, a secondary campus was opened at Athelstone, in the then outer suburbs of ]. From 1972, the school accepted ] enrolments from girls wanting to complete their secondary studies. (At that stage, Kildare offered education up to Year 10). In 1996, the school changed to offer co-educational enrolments from Reception to Year 12, the first Jesuit school in the world to do so. | |||
The school helps out children with disabilities who attend Saint Patrick's Special School which is in ]. The school helped Saint Patrick's Special School procure a bus through a 1000km relay fundraiser and students are part of 'buddy classes' with the students at the special school. | |||
In 2005 St. Ignatius and Mercedes College had their inaugural 'Intercollegiate Sports Carnival' or more commonly known as just 'Intercol'. Each year the senior years of both colleges participate in eight sports for seventeen shields in the winter season, the school that wins the majorty of the shields is the overall winner of the Carnival and 'Mercedes-Ignatius' Shield. | |||
