According to the 2001 UK Census 77,156 current British residents were born in Cyprus, therefore approximately 40% of the present UK Cypriot population is descended from a historical Cypriot population which dates back to the 17th century and from immigration which occurred more than two generations ago. Some people listed as Cyprus born were born in Cyprus to British parents on the British Bases.
The majority of Cypriots (from both sides of the island) emigrated from Cyprus between the two world wars, and from the 1950s to the 1980s, due to ethnic tensions, economic and social deprivation and the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of northern Cyprus. Between the UK Census taken in 1991 and the one in 2001 the Cypriot born UK population has shrunk by 1.32%. Cypriot Britons born in the UK make up 80% of the current population.
