The Cypriot British community, consists of people originating from then Mediterranean island of Cyprus who were born and/or raised in the United Kingdom. They are either of Greek or Turkish descent. Numbering over 430,000 (around 300,000 Greek Cypriots and 130,000 Turkish Cypriots), the Cypriot British community is the largest overseas Cypriot community on the planet.
History
According to the 2001 UK Census 77,156 current British residents were born in Cyprus, therefore the majority of the present UK Cypriot population is descended Cypriot Britons born in the UK. Some people listed as Cyprus born were born in Cyprus to British parents on the British Bases.
The majority of Cypriots (from both sides of the island) emigrated from Cyprus between the two world wars, and from the 1950s to the 1980s, due to ethnic tensions, economic and social deprivation and the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of northern Cyprus. Between the UK Census taken in 1991 and the one in 2001 the Cypriot born UK population has shrunk by 1.32%.
Since the majority of the Cypriot British population was born in the UK dating back many years it is likely that a large number of Britons may be of Anglo-Cypriot descent in addition to those carrying Greek or Turkish surnames.
