There are therefore a total of seven open seats: five in Tranche Beta and two in Tranche Gamma. (The term extension for Thebainer fills the third vacancy in Tranche Gamma, which would have been the eighth open seat overall.) Assuming the number of arbitrators and tranche structure is left unchanged, the top five appointees will receive full three-year appointments to Tranche Beta (expiring December 31, 2011), and the next two appointees will receive one-year unexpired terms in Tranche Gamma (expiring December 31, 2009). There are therefore a total of eight open seats: five in Tranche Beta, one in Tranche Alpha, and two in Tranche Gamma. (The term extension for Thebainer fills the third vacancy in Tranche Gamma, which would have been the ninth open seat overall.) Assuming the number of arbitrators and tranche structure is left unchanged, the top five appointees will receive full three-year appointments to Tranche Beta (expiring December 31, 2011), the sixth-place appointee will be appointed to a two-year appointment in Tranche Alpha (expiring December 31, 2010), and the next two appointees will receive one-year unexpired terms in Tranche Gamma (expiring December 31, 2009).

2008 Arbitration Committee Election status

The Elections to the English Misplaced Pages's Arbitration Committee commenced on 10 November 2008 (candidate statements opened); voting opened on 1 December 2008. The newly elected Arbitrators will join both Tranches Beta and Gamma. Voting runs for two weeks (exactly fourteen days), and the results will be determined and announced by Jimbo Wales. Nominations were accepted from 10–24 November 2008.

Misplaced Pages:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2008/General Summary provides an at-a-glance overview of this year's Election.

Vacant seats

This year's Election will fill the following outgoing Arbitrators' seats:

  1. Jdforrester (talk · contribs · email) (James Forrester aka "James F.")
  2. YellowMonkey (talk · contribs · email) (previously Blnguyen)
  3. Charles Matthews (talk · contribs · email)
  4. Morven (talk · contribs · email)
  5. Paul August (talk · contribs · email)
  6. UninvitedCompany (talk · contribs · email)
  7. Jpgordon (talk · contribs · email)
  8. Deskana (talk · contribs · email)

  1. Stephen Bain's seat was originally supposed to expire this year. However, Jimbo Wales moved him to Paul's seat, effective January 2009; therefore, Stephen Bain will sit for 1 more year (Paul retired just over 1yr before he was due to end his Committee duty), and his previous seat will now be filled in this election—that seat having expired this year, and therefore giving the person appointed to it a full 3yr term.
  2. UninvitedCompany stepped down 1 year before his seat originally would expire (statement). One candidate from this year's Election will fill this seat, and therefore hold a position on the Committee for one year—until UninvitedCompany's seat would usually expire.
  3. Jpgordon is stepping down 1 year early (statement). One candidate from this year's Election will fill this seat, and therefore hold a position on the Committee for one year—until Jpgordon's seat would usually expire.
  4. Deskana resigned two years before his term would expire (statement). One candidate from this year's election will fill this seat, and therefore hold a position on the Committee for two years, until Deskana's seat would usually expire.

Process

The agreed process being used this year is based around the following seven points.

  1. The Election opened formally on 10 November 2008. On this day, candidates were able to submit their candidate statements. Also, general questions (questions that are submitted once on a single page, and thereafter answered by every candidate in the election) will be accepted on this day.
  2. Candidate statements were accepted 10 November 2008 through 24 November 2008.
  3. General questions were accepted from 10 November 2008 through 17 November 2008.
  4. Individual questions can be asked of each candidate between 10 November 2008 and 1 December 2008. They can be asked on his or her "/Questions for the candidate" subpage, reachable through the respective candidate statement. (Please do not repeat questions that have already been generally asked.)
  5. Voting began at 00:00 UTC on 1 December 2008 and closed at 23:59 UTC on 14 December 2008. Votes cast after that time will be reverted.
  6. Voters had to have a registered account with at least 150 mainspace edits on or before 1 November 2008.

Results

Final tallies can be found at Misplaced Pages:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2008/Results.

Appointments will be announced on this page—and via a number of other media, in all likelihood—on or after 16 December 2008, and hopefully no later than 20 December 2008.
