William Rodríguez was a janitor at the North Tower of the World Trade Center during the September 11, 2001 attacks and was in the basement of the North Tower when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the building. After the attacks he received several awards for heroism for helping in the evacuation of many survivors.

Rodriguez became prominent in the Latino community for helping to institute an economic amnesty program for victims of 9/11 who were undocumented workers.

In 2004 Rodriguez became prominent in the 9/11 Truth Movement when he sued President Bush and 155 others in federal court alleging Bush's complicity in the 9/11 attacks.

Subsequently, Rodriguez traveled around talking about conspiracy theories, his experiences on 9/11, Motivational lectures and Disaster Management. The Herald newspaper of Glasgow characterized him as "the poster boy for a movement currently sweeping the globe....the 9/11 Truth Campaign." He branded himself as "911keymaster", appearing on TV and having himself photographed frequently with a 'master key' to the World Trade center, which, he has alleged on BBC and elsewhere, saved hundreds of lives. He also used the brand "Last Man Out", entitling a documentary DVD and tours in the UK and the USA with that phrase. Rodriguez has also employed the "Last Survivor of the World Trade Center" slogan.

He claimed in federal court documents that he single-handedly rescued fifteen persons. Until sometime in 2008, this claim was featured on his website, 911keymaster.com, in close proximity to a PayPal donations button. He claimed that he raised 122 million dollars for the victims of 9/11.

Magician's assistant

As a young man, Rodriguez worked under the stage name "Roudy" as an assistant to magician James Randi. A December, 2005 article published on the Internet claimed that Rodriguez was adroit at insinuating himself into the good graces of Randi's targets and eliciting incriminating information, and that he had previously been featured on television in Puerto Rico escaping from a chained straitjacket while hanging from a burning rope.

Rodriguez moved to New York from Puerto Rico and, according to the Internet article linked above, he "found himself a small fish in the big pond of New York magicians." He took a day job as a custodian at the World Trade Center. The article goes on to say that Rodriguez's show business aspirations fell by the wayside when his responsibilities for cleaning the office of Governor Mario Cuomo at the WTC expanded to include organizing Governor Cuomo's press conferences, and that after Cuomo left office in 1994, Rodriguez was re-assigned to cleaning the windowless emergency staircases of the North Tower, where he remained until September 11, 2001. An uncommonly handsome man in those days,(editor's opinion) William would stick with that job through the late nineties' period of unprecedented economic prosperity and opportunity for many.

9/11 attacks

Rodriguez said he usually clocked in at 8:00 a.m. and rode an elevator to the 106th floor, where Hispanic employees of Windows on the World fed him a free breakfast. On 9/11, however, he was half an hour late and so he did not go for breakfast but instead reported to a basement office of his employer, American Building Maintenance.

On 9/11, Rodriguez told CNN that shortly before the plane hit the tower he was in the basement when:

...we hear like a big rumble. Not like an impact, like a rumble, like moving furniture in a massive way. And all of sudden we hear another rumble, and a guy comes running, running into our office, and all of skin was off his body. All of the skin. We went crazy, we started screaming, we told him to get out. We took everybody out of the office outside to the loading dock area.

Rodriguez's early accounts repeatedly mentioned a large fireball that shot down the elevator shafts and exploded through the doors, causing serious burn injuries to a man who happened to be standing in front of one of the freight elevator doors. This was consistent with similar reports by numerous other witnesses who saw fireballs erupting and blowing out elevator doors and burning people. In September 2002, Rodriguez said in an CNN interview:

And at that terrible day when I took people out of the office, one of them totally burned because he was standing in front of the freight elevator and the ball of fire came down the duct of the elevator itself, I put him on the ambulance. He did not identified the name of the victim.

In February 2004, at a public meeting held by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Rodriguez spoke briefly, still talking about fireballs that came down the elevator shaft:

The fire, the ball of fire, for example, I was in the basement when the first plane hit the building. And at that moment, I thought it was an electrical generator that blew up at that moment. A person comes running into the office saying 'explosion, explosion, explosion.' When I look at this guy; has all his skin pulled off of his body. Hanging from the top of his fingertips like it was a glove. And I said, what happened? He said the elevators. What happened was the ball of fire went down with such a force down the elevator shaft on the 58th (50A) – freight elevator, the biggest freight elevator that we have in the North Tower, it went out with such a force that it broke the cables. It went down, I think seven flights. The person survived because he was pulled from the B3 level. But this person, being in front of the doors waiting for the elevator, practically got his skin vaporized."

At that same NIST meeting, however, Rodriguez told investigators that he was "the last survivor pulled from the rubble". In fact, there were at least 18 survivors pulled from the rubble of the North Tower long after Rodriguez walked out of the building unharmed. The last survivor was Jenelle Guzman-McMillan, who was rescued some 26 hours later at approximately 12:30 p.m. on September 12, 2001.

Though Rodriguez' October, 2004 lawsuit Rodriguez v. Bush alleges that bombs were planted in the sub-basement and the Twin Towers brought down by Controlled Demolition, no claim is made there that Rodriguez witnessed any explosions himself. Nor is any of Rodriguez' claimed 14 corroborating witnesses named or quoted--though the Complaint quotes dozens of others. Of the 27 witnesses Rodriguez claims he offered to the 9/11 Commission, which witnesses the Commission allegedly refused to interview, not one of them was quoted or identified in the lawsuit. None of the fifteen persons alleged in the first paragraph of the suit to have been "single-handedly rescued" by Rodriguez were identified either.

By August 17, 2007, after more than two years of telling his story to enthralled audiences, he told C-Span:

All of a sudden at 8:46 ... we hear 'BOOM!' An explosion so powerful and so loud that push us upward in the air coming from below! It was so powerful that all the walls cracked, the false ceiling fell on top of us, the sprinkler system got activated and everybody started screaming in horror: 'HELP! HELP! HELP!

He claimed that he used a master key to let people out from behind locked emergency exit doors, saving hundreds of people, and that he turned down Hollywood movie deals worth millions and book contracts "from every publisher" because he "wanted to maintain integrity.".

He told a Los Angeles audience that a massive partial collapse occurred in the building: "the 65th floor went down floor by floor by floor to the sky lobby, which would be the 44th floor." This claim has never been corroborated. Rodriguez says he was on the 39th floor when this collapse happened. He said he believed he heard the plane strike Tower Two at about the same time. By the time of the C-Span cable special of 8/17/07 Rodriguez stated quite clearly that at that moment(39th floor) that's what he believed, and emphatically clarifies "not that it was! but that's what I thought afterwards" (time stamp 01:39.50 to 01:40:13). He was not close to any windows and "speculated" wrongly but openly admits it was a mistake almost six years after the fact.

Rodriguez also claimed to have seen hijacker Mohand al-Shehri scoping out the building prior to the attacks, in June 2001. A Daily News article says he told the FBI and the 9/11 Commission that he recognized the man after a brief, chance encounter months prior to the terrorist attacks. "It is believed that American Airlines Flight 11 hijacker Mohamed Atta cased New York City targets, including the Diamond District, but Rodriguez may have given the 9/11 panel the first eyewitness testimony about a hijacker inside one of the towers before the terror strike.

Rodriguez gave evidence to the 9/11 Commission. As was the case with the vast majority of the more than 1200 witnesses who gave evidence to the Commission, Rodriguez's evidence was not given in public and was not specifically itemized in the Commission Report. Of the 1200+ witnesses whose testimony was taken by the Commission, approximately 160 were conducted publicly.. Rodriguez complains that his testimony never appeared in the Commission Report and that many of the survivors were not called to testify. However, the Commission acknowledges that its report is only a summary of the work that it did, and that it specifically cites only a fraction of the sources it consulted. It acknowledges that due to the scope of the events touching so many issues and organizations, it did not interview every knowledgeable person or find every relevant piece of paper, but that its report is a foundation for a better understanding of a landmark in the history of the United States.

RICO lawsuit

In October 2004, Rodriguez sued the President of the United States and 155 other parties, accusing them of complicity in the 9/11 attacks.

His 237-page civil lawsuit included allegations pursuant to the RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) against The United States Of America, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, George Herbert Walker Bush, George Walker Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald H. Rumsfeld,and numerous others, totaling 156 defendants in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

In his lawsuit, Rodriquez made hundreds of allegations including, but not limited to, allegations that the Twin Towers were destroyed by means of “controlled demolitions”; that members of the FDNY were ordered, on instructions of the CIA, not to talk about it; that the FDNY conspired with Larry Silverstein to deliberately destroy 7WTC; that missiles were fired at the Twin Towers from “pods” affixed to the underside of the planes that struck them; that FEMA is working with the US government to create “American Gulag” concentration camps which FEMA will run once the federal government’s plan to impose martial law is in place; that phone calls made by some of the victims, as reported by their family members, were not actually made but were "faked" by the government using "voice morphing" technology; that a missile, not American Airlines Flight 77, struck the Pentagon; that United Airlines Flight 93 was shot down by the U.S. military; that the defendants had foreknowledge of the attacks and actively conspired to bring them about; that the defendants engaged in kidnapping, arson, murder, treason, conspiracy, trafficking in narcotics, embezzlement, securities fraud, insider trading, identity and credit card theft, blackmail, trafficking in humans, and the abduction and sale of women and children for sex. In his Complaint, Rodriquez also alleged that he "single-handedly rescued fifteen persons from the WTC" . No evidence in support of any of these claims has ever been provided by Rodriguez.

In December 2004, the only three defendants who had been served with Rodriguez's Complaint (FEMA, the USA and the DHS) filed a motion to dismiss, or, in the alternative, to transfer the case on the grounds of lack of jurisdiction and/or improper venue. This was premised on the fact that the Air Transportation Safety and System Stabilization Act vests exclusive jurisdiction for litigation relating to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the courts of the Southern District of New York.

The Pennsylvania court granted the defendants' motion to transfer the case to the Southern District of New York on May 2, 2005.

On September 30, 2005, the same three defendants (USA, DHS, and FEMA) brought a motion to dismiss Rodriguez's claims, based on, inter alia, lack of subject matter jurisdiction.

In January 2006, Rodriquez swore and filed a 51 page affidavit in opposition to the motion to dismiss, which reiterated and expanded upon his conspiracy allegations.

On June 26, 2006, the court dismissed Rodriguez's claims against the USA, DHS, and FEMA, and gave Rodriguez until July 7, 2006 to show cause why his lawsuit should not be dismissed with respect to the other 153 defendants.

Rodriguez failed to do so, and the court dismissed all of his claims against all of the remaining 153 defendants on July 17, 2006.

International travels

In May 2005, Rodriguez and his lawyer at the time, Philip Berg, did tours of speaking engagements in Europe financed by multi-millionaire Jimmy Walter. .

In 2006, Rodriguez traveled to Malaysia appearing at a conference with Michael Collins Piper and with Jimmy Walter.

In 2006 Rodriguez traveled to Venezuela with Jimmy Walter, making many television appearances.

In August 12 2006, Rodriguez was invited to speak at the Global Peace Campaign 9/11 Conference in Japan. He also spoke to the Japanese Legislature also known as The National Diet of Japan.

In February, 2007, He also toured in the UK with Annie Machon. Rodriguez's Glasgow appearance was written up in The Herald (Glasgow). .

His visit to Lewes was preceded by an interview written up in The Argus from Brighton. .

His visit to Birmingham was covered by the Birmingham Mail. The Ipswich visit was announced in the Evening Star (Ipswich). His Lancaster visit was covered by The Lancaster Visitorand The Virtual Lancaster

Also,while in UK, His lecture was the first event broadcasted by the Oxford Brookes University Television Station.

In June, 2007, he was a guest speaker at the International Islamic Fair in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.He also spoke at the University of Malaya

In July, 2007, He was a guest speaker for the Islamic Propagation Society International, in the Penang Region of Malaysia. He met with the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad . On July 20th, He appeared at The Universiti Sains Malaysia.

On July 11th, 2007, Rodriguez gave a speech in Paris,France.

Also in 2007, Rodriguez spoke at the Global Peace and Unity Conference in London.

In 2008 He spoke for 1000 of Guatemala's top leaders about Disaster Management and facing adversity.

September 2008, He visited Colombia and spent a week doing interviews about his experience and Disaster Management. He also did a presentation for a National multimedia company.

October 2008, He was a speaker for The Global Peace and Unity Conference (3rd year). Speaking to thousands of Muslims at the Excel Arena in London. Speaking among celebrities like, Reverend Jesse Jackson and singer Jermaine Jackson

December 2008, He was invited to speak in Yemen and Dubai for the IIF Conference. The speech was about peace and peace movements around the globe.

Other events

Rodriguez has been written about in the NY Post, the Christian Science Monitor, New York Magazine, and the Herald of Glasgow. He has appeared on the Cristina show, on BBC, on Dutch national TV, and on C-Span.

In 2002, he worked with Kenneth Feinberg, Special Master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund to help institute an economic amnesty program for victims of 9/11 who were undocumented workers.

Rodriguez received a National Hero Award from the Senate of Puerto Rico, was once a member of the Families Advisory Council created by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, and was an organizer and president of the Hispanic Victims Group.

Rodriguez converted to Islam in 2006.

He has claimed that he married an American reporter in 2006.

He alleges that he turned down Hollywood movie deals worth millions and book contracts "from every publisher" because he "wanted to maintain integrity." These claims have never been corroborated.

He co-wrote and self published the book "Tuesday of Horror" (Martes de Horror)in Spanish with the help of a retired Liutenant Coronel from the Armed Forces of Colombia There is also an Italian book called "11 settembre Bush ha mentito"of William Rodriguez's story. He is listed as an author of the book "Debunking 911", published by American Free Press in 2005. Other authors listed include Victor Thorn, Michael Collins Piper, Christopher Bollyn, Greg Szymanski, and Ellen Mariani.

Also excerpts of his story can be found in several books, including "Towers of Deception" by Barrie Zwicker (pages 76-77,349).and "Towergate" in German (page 90).

Also in 2006, he received the Latin Pride National Award for Lifetime Achievement helping the Latino Community and the Good Karma Humanitarian Award. The Good Karma award mentioned the fifteen single-handed rescues in its press release.

Between November 1 - 7, 2007, Rodriguez took his self-titled "Last Man Out" program on tour on the west coast of the USA. In Oakland, California, he was introduced by Cindy Sheehan.

On September 11th, 2008, a video of Rodriguez hosting a television special about Tango, was shown by PBS NJN Television Network.Filmed in 2002, the show was rebroadcasted for the 25th year anniversary of the TV Program.

In 2007 the Herald newspaper of Glasgow pointed out weaknesses in Rodriguez' story, saying "the only evidence put forward in two hours of discussion was his own testimony," and noting his admirers' susceptibility to "razmatazz" such as a showy display of the master key.

A case in point is an article also from 2007 from the online journal California Chronicle, an introspective essay inspired by William's presentation--and a view much different from the analysis in the Glasgow Herald: "Rodriguez is a humble man who makes references to the fact that he is just a janitor, but in truth, he is a powerful individual with an amazing story.... who possesses incredible loyalty, uncommon bravery, and the strength of his convictions."

Press coverage

Rodriguez has claimed that Spanish media will show that his story has been consistent all along, while American media edited out his reports of explosions. In August of 2007 he claimed that after his initial CNN account of 9/11 (about the "rumble") he gave a full account later in the day on 9/11 that was "televised everywhere." He claimed that account had been lost, but that CNN interns had found it recently, and would make it available. Neither the alleged CNN tape nor the Spanish media tapes have ever been provided by Rodriguez or anyone else.
