His parents are Aleksandr (aka Sasha) and Larisa Chmerkovskiy. He has a brother, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, who is an amateur dancer and a two-time world champion.http://www.idontlikeyouinthatway.com/pictures/20080527/karina%20smirnoff%20nipple%20slip%20/karina%20smirnoff%20nipple%20slip%201a.html
Immigration was very hard on Chmerkovskiy and his family due to financial and language barriers. At a young age, Chmerkovskiy was in a skiing accident that left his right leg broken. Doctors informed him that there would be many hardships and difficulties he would have to face with his leg and that dancing wouldn’t even be a possibility. However, he was able to make a successful recovery, continued to dance and has since then achieved many great things.
Chmerkovskiy is the owner of three dance studios in the New York City area, one of which is the Rising Stars Dance Academy (RSDA). The studio is home to national and international champions and is known throughout the world. The other two studios are "Dance with Me" Social Dance Studios. One is located in Ridgefield, NJ and the other in Glen Head, NY. Maksim Chmerkovskiy is one of the creators and directors of “Dance Team USA”, a non-profit educational and charitable organization dedicated to recruiting, supporting, and training future DanceSport participants. DanceSport is the term used to refer to those who dance in the United States. This sport is practiced mostly by the children of families from Eastern Europe. DanceTeam USA tries to raise youth awareness and participation in the sport nationwide. Maks also has his own production company called “Maksim Chmerkovskiy Productions” which organizes performances all over the world. The company has performed at the grand opening of Wynn Macau, A Wynning Hand benefiting Memorial Sloane Kettering, NetJets Invitational, Wynn Las Vegas and more.
Along with this, Chmerkovskiy has created a website called the Ballroom Dance Channel (BDCsocial.com) with best friend Tony Dovolani and previous dance partner Elena Grinenko.

He partnered with actress Tia Carrere in season 2 where they finished in sixth place, and with singer Willa Ford in season 3 where they came in seventh place. Chmerkovskiy returned to Dancing with the Stars in March 2007 for Season 4, this time partnered with boxer Laila Ali, the daughter of Muhammad Ali. They made it to the finals and finished in third place.
Chmerkovskiy appeared on Season 5 of Dancing with the Stars. He was partnered with Mel B (aka "Scary Spice") Although they were the highest scoring couple with the judges, the couple received second place and were a favorite of many.
On February 16, 2008, it was officially announced that Chmerkovskiy would not be partaking in season 6 of Dancing with the Stars. However he and season 5 partner, Mel B came back to dance for the 100th episode.
He returned for the show's 7th season, this paired with two-time Olympic volleyball gold medalist, Misty May-Treanor. Sadly, Chmerkovskiy and May-Treanor were forced to withdraw from the competition in Week 3 on October 6th, 2008. During a practice for their jive, Misty ruptured her Achilles tendon and required surgery. This withdrawal gave them a finish of tenth place. Len Goodman, head judge on the show, stated on the October 7th show that he believed she could have made it to the finals. In her honor, that night Maksim and Edyta Sliwinska performed the jive (dance) routine he had choreographed.
On February 9, 2009 on Good Morning America it was announced that Maksim would be paired with Denise Richards for the 8th season of Dancing with the Stars.
