Lightbot

Hello, it looks like User:Michael Hardy has autoblocked (again) Lightbot's IP and then gone away for a few days. As Lightmouse said, "one wrong autoblock is unfortunate, two wrong autoblocks look like carelessness." Would you kindly re-unblock Lightbot...again. Thanks...NeutralHomerTalk • January 3, 2009 @ 16:10

Thank you very much :) Your help is most appreciated. - NeutralHomerTalk • January 3, 2009 @ 16:13
Sorry to bother you again, but do you think you could help again? The same admin has re-re-re-autoblocked Lightbot's IP. This is kinda crazy. - NeutralHomerTalk • January 3, 2009 @ 16:31
Looks like User:J.delanoy removed the autoblock this time. Thanks for your help though :) Take Care...NeutralHomerTalk • January 3, 2009 @ 16:37

Demographics pages

We need to figure out what to do to finish these up: User:Thehelpfulone/Country demographics articles.

At the moment, they aren't that easy to work on with AWB, because there isn't yet a shared search string to key upon in all the pages that have a CIA World Factbook statistics section.

Once a key is in place, AWB can be used to target just the demographics articles with a World Fact Book statistics section in them. The project can then be broken down into simple AWB search/replace operations, which will accelerate this clean-up project immensely.

So, what I need you to do is manually check each page (using Linky to go as fast as possible), and look for those articles that have the World Factbook stats in a single section or data block. The statistics we're looking for are those that have not been merged with non-World Factbook material.

When you find a page with the CIA stats, give them the following heading and section lead (replacing the existing heading, if any):

I did this task on my main account - as there were less than 10 pages that needed the find/replace!

From the Judges

What a brilliant finale to Round 1. With so little in it it was always going to be a tight contest, particularly in the all-important wildcard places. Congratulations to all those who have made it to Round 2, and commiserations to all who have been eliminated. I hope you continue to contribute as fully as you have been in the tournament, if not better!

As has been stated before, Round 2 begins Wednesday, April 1 2009. I hope you are all ready!

Move request

Please move Cognitive enhancer to Nootropic (the original and most common name for this). I can't do it because there's more than one edit in the history at the destination.

Thank you.

The Transhumanist    00:59, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey,

I have now moved that page for you! :)

The Helpful One 09:49, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Thank you.
The Transhumanist    19:49, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Could you reverse that? We had a discussion on the talk page about this. Scientists often use nootropic as a subset of cognitive enhancers, and most use the word cognitive enhancers. II | (t - c) 22:25, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
    • Oddly, the discussion identified the term "nootropic" as the most widely used term, yet the page was moved anyways. I've looked over the field, and "nootropic" isn't a subset of "cognitive enhancers" (though "memory enhancers" are), "cognitive enhancers" is a synonym for "nootropics". I've added more information to talk:Nootropic. The Transhumanist    00:51, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Outline of knowledge WikiProject update - 04/02/2009

Hi everyone.

Things are going slow again. Where have you been?!

Maybe what you need to get you going is a little competition...

Who are we competing with?

Encyclopedia Britannica. Specifically, with its Outline of knowledge (presented in its volume called the Propaedia). Currently, they're kicking our asses. You've really got to check out their Outline of Knowledge (available only in the encyclopedia's paper edition - not the online version).

Portals. Informally, of course, just for the fun of it. There are around 600 portals. We're about 100 behind them, with about 500 outlines. Let's blow past them and leave 'em in the dust!

Confusion in editors at large

Now that the country outlines have been moved to the encyclopedia proper (article space), recruiting help on these is of high priority -- it will soon be time to alert all relevant editors to the nature and function of these and how they relate to other country coverage on Misplaced Pages.

However, I've noticed instances in which editors do not understand the nature and function of outline pages, and complain that they are redundant to articles. Well, ya. (That's the point of an outline - to provide the essentials in a structure for greater understanding, for easy viewing and faster reading, and to provide a topical guide).

A few editors over the years have viewed outlines as redundant to portals, not understanding the purpose and scope of outlines, nor the benefits provided by their structure and standardization.

These problems of misunderstanding need to be solved before "going public", to prevent their expansion as the community's awareness of these pages increases. Consider the response we'd get now if we announced these pages on the talk pages of 500 WikiProjects, 500 article talk pages, and placed links in 500 see also sections, etc.

That could be a nightmare.

So...

Encyclopedic and administrative support

I've been working on a couple things that will help alleviate confusion and hopefully reduce the need for editors to ask questions and seek advice. They're drafts, still under construction. Please look these over and jump in and help complete them (directly or by providing feedback):

First is an Outline article draft, intended to replace the current Outline article.

Next is a guideline on the Outline of knowledge and its outline pages.

Let me know what you think. Do they help you understand outlines better and how to develop them on Misplaced Pages? What is missing? How can they be improved?

Technical problem with my sign

Hi. I dont know if you can help me. Since an hour ago I have faced a problem with my signature. I personalized it yesterday, and it worked properly. Since then I did'nt change it anymore. It still works when I use it on most pages (like here on your discussion-page). But whenever I place my signature on my own user or user-discussion page, the time and the date is displayed in red (like the heart), and I have no idea why this is. The start of Round 2 has been in some respects an explosive one, with one user in particular almost in the triple figures after just a week. There are obviously contestants with no points or very few, but as it is so early in the round this can probably be excused. Keep it up everyone!

Note that due to unforeseen circumstances, Mitchazenia has been eliminated from the contest. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Outline of knowledge WikiProject update - 04/06/2009

As the country outlines have been approaching completion and more attention has been given to the non-country outlines and the Outline of knowledge as a whole, I've run into this...

Topic lists

As you know, we've been cleaning up sets of pages the links of which are displayed on the outlines.

One of the most prominent of the sets presented are the "List of x topics" (including "List of x-related topics) pages, and they are in a sorry state.

There's actually 2 different kinds mixed together in the same set: most of them are alphabetical indexes.

The others are non-alphabetical hierarchical lists. That is...

outlines!

So, I've been renaming the indexes to "Index of x articles" or "Index of x-related articles", and wikifying them (especially their lead sections). So far, all the country-related topics lists that are indexes have been renamed. It appears the new name fits so well that nobody favors the old name over the new. It's been over a week since that was done, with no complaints, so I've started on the rest.

As for the topic lists that are outlines, those can be absorbed or merged into the OOK. Even though this would entail a lot of renaming and reformatting, and cutting and pasting, these pages might still save us some work! I'm not sure how many there are, but that should become clear once the index pages are all renamed.

Feel free to join in and help. It's hog's heaven!

The Transhumanist    04:47, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi. There's a problem with at least a few of your edits today, eg outline of dance and outline of painting: These links at the top were meant to lead to the "List of x topics" (or in the renamed scheme, "Index of x topics"), but your botrun edited them into selfredirects. I only checked a few, so don't know how extensive the mistake is. That's all, thanks :) -- Quiddity (talk) 17:12, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey,

I have now moved that page for you! :)

Thank you.
The Transhumanist    19:48, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
A user has asked for this page move to be reversed - per the previous discussion at Talk:Nootropic#Page_move. Therefore, should I revert back? The Helpful One 12:55, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
The move to "cognitive enhancers" was bogus. Even the person who contacted you preferred the term "nootropic" in the discussion. No consensus on the facts were reached (see the discussion, it's hilarious, yet the page was still moved). I've added to the discussion there, with some solid citations showing that "nootropic" is the most common term for the topic. The Transhumanist    03:12, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Another move request

Please move Talk:Cognitive enhancers to Talk:Nootropic. To match the article page.  :) Thank you. The Transhumanist    03:12, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Bot changes in violation of MOS

Edits by the bot, per this diff, violate the MOS, and have been reverted wholesale. Please redo these edits, but refrain from making "cosmetic changes" such adding spaces in headings. Per WP:HEADING, "Spaces between the == and the heading text are optional (==H2== versus == H2 ==). These extra spaces will not affect the appearance of the heading, except in the edit window." Please respect the original editor's intent, and have the bot stop making these changes. Thanks. - BillCJ (talk) 12:24, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I reverted all the changes in that edit, which is what I meant by "wholesale". I don't have a bot to make repetitive edits easieer, so I don't see why I needed to do all the work. As to uniformity, the article did use the ==H2== format uniformly, so I'm not sure why you think changing it to == H2 == makes it more uniform. And sure, it's a nit-picky thing, but why change change then? - BillCJ (talk) 14:27, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
